    This has always been my favourite track in Dark Souls 3. There's just something so ironic about what is arguably the only heroic sounding track in the game being given to a suit of armor, the only boss that is not a living being. As if to say that the world has slipped so far that the only thing in which they can still find glory is the memories of the past.

    In Shintoism, there is a belief that even objects have a soul. With that perspective, the Dragonslayer Armour is quite tragic. This literal suit of armor has been in many glorious battles and has earned its rest, but the pilgrim butterflies are forcing it to keep fighting. Just like how the undead curse denies people the release of death until they fulfill some duty for the one who cursed them in the first place.

    Bro FINALLY you reviewed my favourite OST the game. The first phase definetely is to represent the honor and the great legacy of the dragonslayer's, those who felled the biggest enemy of the gods and the fact that on my first run he was one of the bosses i got stuck on the longest really amplifies the honor and discipline i feel when fighting against him while the OST plays.

  • @Souls0798
    @Souls0798 8 місяців тому +3

    The armor is being controlled by the butterfly. I really believe this ost is reflecting the armor going through the process of freeing itself from the control of the butterfly, because we are weakening the butterfly control through the fight. Like in the end things doesn't make sense, because you were a dragon slayer, not an ordinary warrior that faces normal people. The armor got it own consciousness and its regaining it back. I absolutely loved the analysis. I defeated this dude 2 week ago in a SL1 that im doing it and i really felt how powerful this ost is (This music and the sound of the armor slamming his shield to the ground, real hard, makes this battle even more intense). I really recommend all souls fans to play those games in lvl1, the extreme fragility that you have in this kind of run makes you interact so deeply with the bosses that you feel the OST's even more stronger in comparison with the normal gameplay. Absolutely loved your channel.

    I’ve always thought of this track as a kind of reward for the player. After trudging through some of the most depressing and grueling areas in the game and gathering 3 of the cinders of lords, you finally enter the beautiful, grandiose lothric castle. You reach what you think is the summit, then you’re rewarded with the masterpiece that is the first phase of this track. It’s so majestic and awe-inspiring, sort of reminding the player that there is something to fight for, there is beauty remaining in the world.
    Then phase two kicks in, and you realize that the Armour isn’t the regal and proud warrior you thought it was. It’s hollow, controlled by the pilgrim butterflies. Just like everything else in lothric, it’s tainted, corrupted, a shadow of what it once was.
    It was a awesome moment in the middle of a dying world, but you must keep moving.
    PS: If you enjoyed this track, you would adore Crimson Bat.

  • @lillonerboi504
    @lillonerboi504 Рік тому +5

    On a more analytical note. Considering the pilgrim butterflies (the rotten tendril things floating around the arena) are the things controlling it. I eventually got this idea that the song is reflecting the pilgrims themselves. They were once those hunchbacked people walking endlessly through the wastes of the world, searching for Lothric castle, to see the prophetical fate of the world through to the end. All from different kingdoms and lands, different views and ideas. All came to Lothric, and passed on. We see that some if not all have become those butterflies controlling the armor, and perhaps the songs multitude of concepts of “honor, confidence” opposed by “confusion, losing touch.” Are a reflection of the many feelings and emotions of those pilgrims who gave their every bit of life to see the world and it’s fate through to the end. They are losing control of themselves as they become something else, while also losing to the player character as we defeat their last bastion against us from doing whatever they don’t want us to do. But also filled with that confidence of having given so much, what’s the matter with given just that bit more? To see your journey through to the end. And to me that’s always been the message of not just Dark Souls but every game made by From and Miyazaki. It’s about the struggle of losing yourself, losing everything and anything and no longer be certain of your direction, but taking a direction anyway and seeing it through. Because that’s what gives us meaning.

    I think the themes of duty, remorse and hopelessness and all that are kinda foundational in the atmosphere of the Dark Souls series, as a whole. You didn't choose the path you're on, it was chosen for you, and you aren't doing any of this because you desire it, but because you have to do it. If not you, then who? If you don't do it, if you fail, it could mean the end of all life, or unimaginable suffering for everyone else and for yourself. Dark Souls is about doing what must be done, because nobody else can.

    He's one of my favorite boss fights and I love his music so much. The chorus hitting after the first 30 or so seconds is one of my favorite parts, and yeah, I sway in time with it every time I listen to it. Phase 1 is my favorite, but Phase 2 shows how the fight changes with the addition of attacks from the pilgrim butterflies around throwing stuff at you. It really gets a bit frenetic and it can be pretty chaotic to tell what's going on.
    I love how players think they're going to fight one of those big "butterflies", but they're fighting the armor that one of those is controlling. I think that's why such a big guy is so easy to stagger: it's literally a hollow armor set. His attacks have weight to them (a lot of weight), but breaking his shielding wasn't too difficult to do and he'd stagger to his knees pretty easily. He's another boss that will absolutely wreck players who roll around too much. I see him as sort of practice for the Nameless King, a bit.
    I love finding the Iron version wandering at the fringes of the watery area of the Ringed City. He was easier for me, but it was still a tough fight; especially since I was hoping not to agro that stupid Judicator wandering around the place (why the hell do those respawn?!).

      The Tree Sentinels give me the feeling of a mounted Dragonslayer Armour now that you say that. Shield bashes, extremely aggressive etc. I wonder how fun a dismounted Tree Sentinel fight would be.
      It’s almost the same as how Crucible Knights fill the same role as Black Knights. But unlike how I can see how strong the Dragonslayer Armour is, there’s no real feeling to how strong Tree Sentinels are lorewise, perhaps because they’re so common?
      Turn that around for Black Knights and Crucible Knights though. BK’s are strong sure, but their armour is somewhat above average, while their weapons are fantastic, but they don’t really scream “we are so powerful we hunted demons for generations and won”. Yet CK’s have some of the better armour in the game, their weapons are likewise build-defining. But then you put their access to Erdtree Incantations that allow them to be extremely versatile? Yeah I can believe they killed dragons alongside Godfrey.

But as the fight progresses the vaneer of this lie is being peeled away; the kingdom is rotten from within, it's being manipulated a lot like these horror butterflies are manipulating this armour. then the butterflies also begin attacking the player from outside the arena. when the player finally wins the butterflies also fall, too much of themselves invested into the puppet. a lot of the staccato percussion and spinning strings is meant to convey the movements of the flying threats. the vocals are more the armours immediate threat.

      Façade or not, ðe first phase is ðe depiction of ðe Iron Dragonslayer's will, while second phase is him finally getting corrupted.

    Such an amazing theme for a very , very underrated boss. Fucker exudes Chad energy. Not the hardest boss , not a push-over , very simple mechanics and fight overall.
    Also , it's a fucking Hollow armor , being puppeted by Pilgrim Butterflies , fighting as it once used to when worn by its Master. That is just cool and sad.

    I don't know the exact lore behind the fight as I never thought the fight to be THAT interesting, the only S-tier part is the music, and it always made me feel like I was fighting a Paladin. For the first part of the music. I just imagine striking down this noble being, turning my back on it, hear some weird noises and see the paladin rise up, members contorting, foaming at the mouth, and just launch at me like a rabid beast.
    The fight would have been great with a fake out :
    You "kill" the armor, see it collapse apart, you prepare to leave, the pilgrim butterflies let one loud cry out, fall, and the armor just gathers itself for one more bout without the shield and a more frantic moveset. For those who know, imagine that at 6:33 , the Dragonslayer Armor start using the Wild Strikes move in synch with the music.

    To me, it sounds like lost glory. Not lost to disgrace, but to the ravages of time. The Dragonslayer Armour is a relic of an age long past, and barely relevant in the crumbling world of Dark Souls 3 - all its grand accomplishments and legends are the least of anyone's interest in a dying world. Just like the Age of Fire, it is dwindling and desperately grasping at relevance and the glorious days of old.

    I always thought this song was from the Ashen One's perspective. Dark Souls can be categorized as dark fantasy a.k.a "horror fantasy." I bring this up because the Dragonslayer Armour, as powerful as it is, is fighting the player with the aid of these dark, decrepit angels who attack from all sides. It's a very tough boss battle with horrific and intimidating scenery. That's why I believe the piece is based on the Ashen One's viewpoint.

    • @danielantony1882
      @danielantony1882 Рік тому

      It's boþ, actually. It's a þird person perspective. Ðe first seconds sound terrifying because you're supposed to look at ðe pilgrim and slowly pan back and realize Iron Dragonslayer's presence. Ðat's exactly how ðe song is set up. And ðen you hear his glory, strong will, and ðe struggle, þrough ðe first phase, until he gets corrupted in ðe second one.

    I don't really like the Dark Souls 3 soundtrack that much, especially when compared to Bloodborne or Elden Ring, but this is one of the more underrated boss themes in the series. It's very good, up there with Midir and others from the game.
