    I understand the desire to get rid of as much as possible or each a quota, but it’s also okay to keep stuff you like. If you regularly wear everything you own, I count that as good.

    • @stephaniewild6184
      @stephaniewild6184 6 років тому +36

      Hadar Pepperstone this is important 🙌🏻 I think people feel a-bit pressured to chuck things away and be all minimal , but if you really love, wear and have joy in everything you own- then why not keep it! Otherwise you might buy more to replace what you got rid of but you’ll never find what you already had before.. endless vicious circle of sadness and shopping.
      Just be mindful and everything in moderation :)

    You could make the First Aid Kit shirt into art, if it doesn't fit you anymore. Like, just cut out the motive and put it in a frame. That's what I did with one of my my sentimental t-shirts, that didn't fit me anymore. Also, you could make a pillow out of it and practice your sewing a bit more 😂

      I took photos of my sentimental band shirts and got rid of them. I don't miss them at all now but it makes me sad that they were probably burned and not re-used.

      The idea of cutting or throwing away band shirts seems sacrilegious to me. If you are going to frame them why not fold the shirt instead? Also, i would suggest turning old band shirts into full back patches on a jacket eg. Denim jacket.

    Personally, I like to do a little clearing out about once every 3 months so it doesn’t end up being a huge ordeal. I like to pick an area like my bookshelf or my closet and just pile everything on the bed and reorganize and toss as I go. It’s also a good opportunity to dust and redecorate.

    • @alicecairn4836
      @alicecairn4836 6 років тому +4

      I totally agree! It also really helps you work out what you actually want. I find if I do a big clear out, I actually don't get everything I should but when you go back in a month you can get rid of even more!

    • @ksub91
      @ksub91 6 років тому +1

      I do the same, but about every six months because I like to go through stuff when the seasons are changing, i.e. in the spring and in the autumn, since that's when it goes from being mostly plus degrees (Celsius) to being mostly minus degrees.

    Honestly, the biggest and most helpful thing for me when I went through my clothes the last time (years ago, I need to do it again) was to *thank* the items I got rid of. It's a trick I picked up from the konmari book - it sounds absolutely mental, but I swear it works. If you're hung up on something that you've loved for a long time, but it's just not really doing it for you anymore, or you paid a lot of money for it at the start and you feel like it's a waste... Try thanking the item. "Thank you for serving me so well for so long." or "Thank you for bringing me joy when I bought you." or whatever! It honestly does work, and it cleared up so much of the guilty feelings I had about getting rid of some of the things.

    the main reason why I struggle with clearing out my wardrobe is that I either think "no, I love this piece of clothing so much and wear it all the time I can't possibly get rid of it" or "I've owned this for literally ages and only worn it a few times but I can't throw it away! I've spent so much money on it! I will definitely start wearing it soon!" D:

      one of the biggest hurdles for me too is throwing out expensive stuff. See if you can give it to a friend or family member, or think of how much money a charity shop would be able to make for a cause you support from your expensive item. or, if you have space and minimalism isnt your thing, keeping it is fine. just because minimalism is on trend and worksfor others doesnt mean it works for everyone

    So, you may have/ probably have already done this but I think you now need to split your clothes into summer and winter, and store the stuff you are not using in a storage container. I started doing that last year and it makes getting dressed and managing my wardrobe so much easier, for instance you can more easily see what you have for the season - you may find you have 30% summer clothes and 70% winter, and you need a few more tops or something, or you can more easily see that you are missing a piece, like you said with the black jeans.

    • @isobelsmith5615
      @isobelsmith5615 6 років тому +1

      i do this too, even with dresses that could be worn with tights in winter, or tops under jumpers, or jumpers i could use on summer evenings. sometimes the choice in the morning is overwhelming, and it also stops me going out to buy new things bc im bored when every six months or so i get new pieces ive usually forgot about back in my wardrobe

    My strategy for getting rid of clothes and books has been to quickly go through them every few weeks and get rid of my least wanted items. It does mean more trips to the charity shop but it's much less intimidating than trying to get rid of everything at once.

    I'm been putting off clearing my closet bc I know it's gonna be a lot to handle, but this gave me great inspiration to do it sooner than later. My plan is to devote an entire weekend to the process.
    I have a solid suspicion that I have more than 200 individual pieces of clothing (not including underwear/socks). So I'm definitely going to do the same thing as you with counting each item and noticing what colors/patterns I'm keeping.
    But even though it will be a lot of work, I'm so truly looking forward to the process and especially the result. A lot of these clothes are from high school, when I was 100 pounds lighter than I am now, or gifts I keep out of love for the person who gave them to me, or just don't fit. I am so excited to get rid of the literal baggage I've been carrying around for years and having a closet of only clothes that I love and feel confident in. I know this has been a long comment, but I am just very excited for spring cleaning and Marie Kondo-ing the crap out of my apartment.

I also want to buy some Hufflepuff clothes, or at least yellow clothes, because when I watched this I realized I don't have any yellow clothes, except for a light yellow dress, but that one is really light in colour, I want something in a more proper yellow.

    I don't have a lot of wardrobe space so I have the current favorites in the wardrobe and the non seasonal and special things under the bed. This makes me go through everything twice a year from winter to summer and vice versa.
    Confronting myself that often with all of my clothes helps me get rid of stuff gradually. Sometimes it is just one item that gets sorted out, sometimes there is a lot (like when I realized that I hate Jeans and tight pants), but over time I really got together a collection of clothes that I actually want and enjoy.

  • @Hel101
    @Hel101 6 років тому

    One thing I find helpful to deal with the seasons is do a throwout as the weather starts to change. So then everything you actually wear stays fresh in your mind , and not just what clothes you want yourself to wear. Also, regular throwout so - if you find yourself conflicted over the same items again and again, and you're still not wearing them - then they should probably go. Having said that, it's HARD. I just moved back in with my parents with about a third of the wardrobe space, and even are multiple throwouts over the course of the year, and I'm still embarressed that everything I actually wear is out, and the remaining two thirds are suitcases and I couldn't even tell you what's in them.

  • @TheSuperWack

    Hannah! If you have t-shirts that mean a lot to you but you don't wear anymore, you should consider making or having made a t-shirt quilt! I have two I made, you just cut all the shirts into squares the same size, sew them together, and then sew them to a fleecy or soft material for the backside and ta-da you have a cozy blanket with all your favorite old shirts on it so you can look at them all the time!

    Hey! I cleaned out my wardrobe several weeks ago and just like you, I did it before getting the chance to read The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying up. Watching this video while doing laundry is making me feel the need to do a second round of wardrobe cleaning! 😁

  • @mestevep
    @mestevep 6 років тому

    Hey Hannah! A great way to organize is to make three piles instead of two: "definitely", "maybe", and "no". Do a first round and trust your instincts. It's okay if the "maybe" pile is the biggest. Once you're done with the first round, do a second one only with the "maybe" pile. And then again. And again. Until you're done! This helps me a lot since I'm a very indecisive person, and gives me more time to think about each item! Hope this helps you too! :)

    I do the thing where I put clothes away after washing them in the front of my drawers and the inside-middle of my closet. That way things that I don't wear as much stay in the back/outer edges. Then every few months I can look at just the backs of drawers and the edges of my closet and decide with those things to keep or donate. Cause going through everything is definitely an undertaking.

    I love videos like this! I usually clear out things at the beginning or end of every season (aka when I switch everything out). I evaluate based on whether I wore it or still like it. I've also heard of a strategy where in your closet, you turn all your hangars backwards and then when you wear something you turn the hangar around. At the end of the season or time you've given yourself, anything that's still backwards you know you didn't wear at all!

    I read the life changing magic of tidying up earlier this year and I noticed right away when you were holding the items and thinking about if they brought you joy or not :)
    What I like to do is go through things by timeline, so if I haven't used something for 3 months and can't see myself using it in another 3 months than I donate it. I've also seen that some people put their items in a maybe pile and store it away for a month, and then once they come back to it they reflect on if they could remember each piece that was in there or wanted to pull something out during that time, using that to then indicate if it goes/stays.

I never have anything to wear because I DONT OWN ANYTHING TO WEAR. but I hate spending money so its hard for me to talk myself into buying anything. part of the problem is that Ive been bulking up muscle wise and a bunch of my stuff doesnt fit me anymore, or it looks weird over my big(ger) buff(er) arms/shoulders.

    I have no advice for you about clearing out clothes (because you already did a good job with that!) but I do have another advice for you: GET THIN HANGERS. Get ones that are covered in velvet. It like doubled the space in my wardrobe and beacuse of the velvet they never fall of. Maybe you have a lot of clothes in drawers and not hanging, but ever just for the dresses it will make a difference :D Just maybe keep a few bigger ones for winter coats.

    As for the strategies, I recommend going backpacking for half a year. Wearing the same 7 tops, 1 pair of jeans and 1 pair of leggings for half a year cuts all the emotional connections with your wardrobe and makes it easier to say goodbye :D (ehm went through the curating process two week ago) Also, LOVED this video. Nothing better than chucking unnecessary belongings.

    It feels like this video showing up on my recommended was a wink from the universe for me to stop putting off cleaning my closet. It has been overflowing with stuff for a while and it's even worse now that I've moved and my closet is smaller. Weirdly, I'm much like Hannah-- I don't shop much, so I don't know how the hell it got to this state.
    A fellow Hufflepuff thanks you for the inspiration, Hannah!

    I love watching other people organize their wardrobe and it makes me feel inspired to do so as well but my wardrobe is probably the only thing in my life I currently have organisation in so I have no need to clean it out.

    My method is to create "yes", "no", and "maybe" piles, then continuously go through the "maybe" pile until at the end there's only yes & no piles. I find it makes it easier to make tough decisions because it softens the blow and when something keeps ending up as a maybe again and again it's either time to get rid of it or I have realised /why/ I want to hold on to it and I can decide if there's a valid reason or not.

    When I was studying at university, I tried a sorting system where all my clothes that were on hangers faced in reverse. After each piece of clothing was worn, it was then returned to the closet (after being washed) facing the other direction. Then after a year (and more importantly all seasons of Australian weather in a subtropical area), it was obvious to me which items were my favourite and which needed to go. Of course, there were a few outliers in the pile that weren't worn during the year long experiment but in general it helped significantly with shrinking my clothing collection. My biggest weakness though are socks - I have an entire drawer full of them (probably 30 or so pairs). To be fair though, I wear socks every day of the year and they do start to get holes quite quickly if they aren't a thick pair. I love clothes swap events and sourcing items that are locally made, versatile and most importantly composed of natural fibres where possible (because microfibres escape into the waterway and are a form of plastic pollution).

    I've had a sudden lifestyle change and I'm having to move home because my flatmate lost their job and we can't afford to stay there on my wage, so I've just done a massive clear out. It's insane how much stuff I've accumulated over the years, I managed to sell quite a lot on Shpock so at least made some money for a trip to London and expenses for moving out, but I've got a huge pile of things for the charity shops. I've still got loads of things left over, so I'll probably end up doing a massive clear out in a few months too!

    What I do with old band merch shirts is I frame them with any moments of that band. I have a vamps shirt with my ticket wristband and confetti on and planing another couple for other bands. I I think you should do it for your first aid kit shirt, then you'll have some super cute wall art as well as good memories.

    I'm a clothes horder too. It was only last week that i tidied up my room. When I got diagnosed with depression in February I made my room really messy then since March I've been really really REALLY tidy. So I got rid of 2 bin bags of clothes and shoes. It wasn't difficult for me then because I was in the frame of mind of "I need to be tidy, i need to get rid of as much as i can" but now i just want to go through it and check, but I know I shouldn't (my clothes seem to be really sentimental to me for some reason)

    I feel so motivated to go and clear out the rest of my cupboards now! I think one thing I think about if I'm not sure whether to keep or chuck something is, "do I own anything that this goes with/do I own the pieces necessary to put together a great outfit with this?" Half the time, I'll realise that I'll never really wear an item because it would necessitate buying a load of new things, which is the opposite of my objective! Also, if I'm really attached to something and finding it hard to give it away, I'll offer it to a friend or give it to a younger relative like a cousin, as bizarrely that makes me feel better about it 😄😊. Ooh and also, reminding myself that I can still see whatever it is in pictures tends to help me let go of things I might otherwise have hoarded 😄.

    I really want to clear out my wardrobe and make two piles one to give away and sell. I have so much clothes but I find I need them and sometimes I need more which sucks. My tip for throwing away is: look and see if it brings happiness and for the clothes that stay try them on and if you feel wrong in them throw them away too, even if you like them. I gained a bunch of weight and I find even when I love dresses they just don’t fit me the same way, so definitely try things on.

    I love clearing out my wardrobe. I tend to be super sentimental with things but clothes are usually easy for me to toss. I do however keep recent purchases and things I've had for years. I have a ton of tank tops that I never wear that I'll probably toss once I move or even before and other bits that just take up space.

    When I did this, I sorted the ‘get rid’ pile into sellable and charity shop. Once I got my arse into gear, I popped some bits on Facebook/gumtree/depop/carboot ect and sold a few pieces. It took the sting off a little! :) x

    I do it when I'm most motivated. So at the end/beginning of the year I clean stuff out, beginning of spring, and even though I'm no longer in school I still do it end of August or beginning of September. I find it easiest tackling one thing at a time. Like I went through the clothes in my closet first. Then I did my dresser one drawer at a time. It's hard though. I have a hard time getting rid of sweaters and I have a huge collection of scarves that I should make smaller but I can't bring myself to get rid of any of them.

    You can take your First Aid Kit merch shirt and frame it, that way you still have the nostalgia of your first concert and get a new use out of it as artwork. :) Also you can never own too many yellow/orange clothes. Definitely motivated to clean out the closet now, thank you! 🌻💛🧡
