Just stack your L2 viewport on top of the L1 viewport. You could probably put a rectangle on top of the L1 viewport and make it partially transparent to get your gray look

How to delete the line that separate level 1 and level 2? It's pretty ugly to see the line from the exterior view

In the tray on the right hand side of the screen? It's called "tags" in the 2020 version

It is annoying to learn that they changed the clearly understandable word layers to the totally non-obvious word tags. Wastes excessive time.
