- Yes, you read that right, two cars.
This video is not intended to shock, it's a true story and the intent is to help anyone that may find themselves in a similar situation. I hope you never do, but I hope it may help if you do.
I had this noted to talk about for a while so thought I'd tell this crazy story.
Look after yourselves friends, Andy

Forgot to mention - in *both* those accidents I only had legal recourse because I *NEVER* ride without recording the ride. Currently using a Cycliq bike cam. I'll ride without a helmet before I ride without a camera... and I never ride without a helmet. LOL
Will check that out thanks. Cycling uk gives you insurance also when you get annual membership
@Foxtrottangoabc we dont tend to have bicycle insurance here in Canada. If a car hits you, it's their car policy that you go after. In the case of the loose dog, it was the dog owner's house insurance that was sued. Neither case would have proceeded without my video - without it its a he said/she said thing the cops won't even bother with.
id be interested b ut isn't the battery life really poor?
@@theroadprovides Mine's good for at least 5 hours with the light blinking. It might do 7 with no light but I never ride without the light. If 5 hours is really poor then yes. For me it's awesome
June 2017, I van ran a stop sign and shot across the intersection right into my path. I was doing about 20 mph. Saw the van coming on my left, turned to my right to avoid getting t-boned. My left side hit the van’s front right fender. (I was riding my 5-day old S-Works Roubaix.) I remember screaming. next thing I know, I’m being loaded into an ambulance. Arrive at hospital in excruciating pain. Fractured left hip socket, 3 broken ribs, crushed upper sternum. Surgery to put a plate in my hip. 20 days in hospital and months of recovery. I was 67 at the time.
Got a great attorney. Driver’s insurance replaced my bike and paid their full coverage (which wasn’t much. My auto insurance under-insured motorist coverage paid our full coverage … after arm-twisting by my attorney. (Gotta have under-insured motorist coverage.) BTW: Attorney said my Garmin data and route map proved driver was at fault.
I’m still freaked out when riding. Like you said, I’m hyper aware of everything. It takes a few miles to settle down and start enjoying a ride. I always ride with a daylight flashing headlight and Garmin Varia radar. Radar wouldn’t have seen the van, but I like knowing what’s coming behind me.
Getting hit sucks.
sorry to hear this mate
Thanks for sharing your story and such useful information. I regard every motorist as a potential hazard, wear bright colours, have Exposure flashing lights front and rear and also use an action camera. I have been verbally abused for being too visible😂. Great vid thanks very much
Yo Andy, sorry to hear about the car interactions. My birthday is also July 25th. Cheers to a very early birthday!
Also, I too have been hit by a truck here in the States, back in 2018. daylight hours, full lights, didn't matter. Commuting to work and woke some ~30 min after the accident, bleeding with bike and panniers strewn about the street (including work laptop). Left on the side of the road for dead, multiple surgeries and titanium rods/plates/pins in my left leg. Never did find out who ran me down, just recall spotty images of a tan/grey truck. Then the horror of work insurance (as first insurer), car insurance (uninsured motorist claim), legal council, bills falling to claims. Lean on my person for a time of close to 150,000 USD while first insurer tried to sue me and car insurance. I hate insurance...
Recovery - zero weight bearing for a spell; wheel chair and crutches. Loads of rehab.
I still cycle, over 10,000 KM in 2024. Been thinking for a while now of getting Cyclic Cameras. Use Varia radar, and annoy my club riders as I tend to call out every single vehicle. I bumped my Uninsured Motorist cause in my car insurance as high as I could go after this.
you mean they wanted too charge you or pay you 150k?
@@theroadprovides Company Insurance (first insurer) dropped every bill in my lap and put a lean against me when they found out I had uninsured motorist coverage with my car insurance. This to the tune of ~$150K.
As first insurer they felt they had legal right to claim my uninsured motorist payment before they had to cover costs.
This while I was in rehab and learning to walk again, abet with a zero weight balanced leg.
Great video, Andy. Thanks for talking about what happened to you and all the issues that came along with it.
Cyclists are so vulnerable out there on the roads, we've really got to looks after ourselves, because many motorists won't.
When I'm riding in the city I assume that all drivers are idiots and that they can't see me.
Also, thanks for those passing shots, always a nice add. I liked the closing camera retrieval shot...!
ha yeah I thought I'd leave that in, BTS, but yeah they are all a hazard mate, best way to view them
With my insurance broker hat on...this applies to the UK industry....your home contents insurance will have the option to add legal expenses to the cover. Plus they normally include liability to others as standard
cheers Vaughn mate
Sorry to hear about these accidents.
I was nearly hit this morning coming off a roundabout in Esher. The guy then came alongside (which is itself dangerous) and berated me through his open window for having slowed down. He had wanted to overtake on the Roundabout, which is actually against the rules in the U.K. anyway.
After having been hit a couple of times in the past (no serious injuries) I normally have cameras on the bike but today I had changed bikes and did not! U.K. driving though just gets worse, as does the general attitude on the road, which sadly includes some cyclists.
Your motivation though is just awesome and inspiring. You are right too. Adversity that does not kill us makes us stronger and the only answer is to carry on and learn how to mitigate risk, even when not at fault in the first place.
stay safe mate, I know this situation all too wel
Hi Andy, what a horribly terrible experience. Glad that you're doing well today and enjoy riding. Thank you for the advice and your great videos.
thanks for watching mate
Sorry to hear about your accidents.
I have been in one big accident. Hit a pedestrian on a dark bike path, even I had light on. He had nothing.
Hit the ground with face first, only time I forgot my helmet. Broke my cheekbone, smashed my front teeth and got a big concussion. I still have trouble with memory and doing more than one thing and concentration 9 years later.
The pedestrian disappeared and my insurance didn’t helped 😢
But I’m still cycling and doing ultra cycling 😁💪
that's interesting, I feel like Ive had brain fog the last few years I wonder if it could be related? Hope you're all good
@ It can. It’s unfortunately a come follower when you hit your head.
I get it when I get tired.
Glad you recovered from those falls. Some nice advices like usual what you wouldn't think if when you are in the same situation. And what the hell did that woman think to change her story when there was a policeman as witness?
I had a serious fall only once. No idea what happened, I don't remember to it at all, I usually say noone would want to remember crashing face first into the ground. ;) My guess is for some reason I fall over the bike and landed on my face. On the bike there wasn't even a scratch, my camera and other stuff in my backpack was fine too. I was in the hospital for 4 days, it was so damn boring I was thinking just packing up and leaving. :D Had some cracked bones around my right temple, a really badly dislocated finger (needed surgery too) and some scratches here and there. Most recovered in a month but my finger put me off from the bike for months. Then it was winter... So I had to lose like 10-15kg in the next spring...
So my 2 cents about crashing, watch how much do you eat while in the recovery, you are moving a lot less.
that is very true, its my nightmare, the only reason I'm slim is cycling, I would not stop eating!
You are so lucky the police were there. Once an insurance company gets involved a driver will always, always change their story even if they accept responsibility at the scene. You need their insurance details and you need to get witnesses who are prepared to make statements if you can find any - it won't be the first thing you are thinking about, assuming you are even conscious. Don't accept the driver's assurance that they will pay for any damage. They won't. Contact lawyers as soon as possible. If you are a member of Cycling UK get their lawyers on it. It's what they do all the time. Worth joining just for that.
cheers buddy
Great video Andy! I need to ride through the New Forest. Your video captures the beauty amazingly well!!! But, I was struck by all the water! Is that normal, or has it been raining much more than usual. Seem to be little ponds everywhere! Keep up the fantastic work!
hey thanks, yes that's pretty normal, it is better in the summer though
My most-recent collision was with a car that had stopped at a stop sign and then pulled out into me as I was turning onto the road she was on. Fortunately the worst of it was the 9 hour wait in the emergency room waiting for xrays t confirm no internal issues. The driver claims she never saw me - or my 400 lumen pulsing light.
2019 I had the worst bicycle collision I've had so far - with a loose dog that ran into my BB while I was doing 40kmh. 15 rib fractures and a collapsed lung, wrecked the bike. I'm aware of having lost consciousness at least twice.
By far my most frequent close calls have been with drivers, but surprisingly the worst accident (so far!) was caused by an illegally loose dog.
Stay safe everyone!
Man, this resonates. I was taken out by a taxi while riding in 2016 on a multi-use trail along the waterfront in Toronto, right where the trail crosses a roadway. The driver was turning right on a red light (perfectly legal here) but failed to look to his right before starting his turn. I went straight over his hood at 30 km/h and flew into the intersection of a major roadway. Thankfully the only place I suffered any major damage was to my left knee (torn PCL, sprained MCL, torn meniscus and 5 cm tear in the popliteus muscle). My helmet didn't have a scratch and the damage to the bike was limited to needing a tuneup and a new wheel. The PCL has never been fixed but I'm able to do basically everything I did before the injury.
Dealing with the driver's insurance was an absolute nightmare, and I eventually gave up seeking compensation for my damaged bike since it was only $3-400 or so. I eventually decided that avoiding frustration was worth more than what I would have gotten from the insurance company to fix the bike. At least the driver was charged with careless driving as there were plenty of witnesses who saw the whole thing.
sorry to hear this mate
I'm an avid watcher of your videos, and I'll be avidly watching your next race on dotwatcher!
But I was sorry to hear about your 2 incidents (accident is the wrong word here) and the bad attitude of the drivers involved. You were lucky that Police car was there and witnessed it!
The New Forest is very nice for cycling ,on, or off road ,speedlimited to 40 mph. Just avoid the A 35, super busy!
I had thought of doing the 24 hour race you've entered, but since I've added running and weights into my training, I'mso tired ,I just can't get enough miles in🥱🥱🥱
Roundabouts are lethal. Been hit once and another near miss. Both "veteran" motorists also.
I hear you there
Good cautionary tale. Need to investigate bike cams. Might be a good video topic. Front back or both?
thanks mate, I would but the battery life is always quite low?
Unfortunately us humans don’t bounce well Andy but the main thing is surviving to ride another day 👍. I seem to ride with all senses on high alert when riding major towns and treat everyone like they are blind. Road Reading once, never again! New forest is on my list for a gravel route when the weather clears up 😊👍.
look after yourself mate
Thanks for sharing Andy! Besides learning from your experiences, the best part of the stories are that you are alive, well and still riding!
cheers my man, so far so good
Hi Andy, what's your recording method/ set up...?
Love yer channel
Dave
thanks mate, its basically an osmo action 4 with a grille mount, or the iPhone for static stuff :)
I've had too many close calls and one clip by the wing mirror of van. After that I got front and rear Cycliq camera lights as insurance just incase. Great lights and quality footage. I now use them to record some of my rides for posterity.
Id consider them but battery life is always so low
Bike crashes are never fun. I always remember that being "in the right" or having the "right of way" is not a force-field against negligent drivers. I just stay defensive and assume that every driver is distracted and/or incompetent and ride as such. In my experience the reality is that society is so car-brained that if you crash your own car into a wall people see you as an innocent victim and say "I'm sorry that happened to you" but if you crash your bike by no fault of your own people see you as a risk-taker like a ski jumper or someone who swims with sharks as if bike commuting is in the x-games or something.
Me too! Last year i was hit twice! Both drive off also. Took me out of my season.
oh man, sorry to hear that, that's a nightmare
@theroadprovides it is. Thanks man. Aiming for a Amazing 2025 season 😊
We (in the UK) are a long way from the French system, where it’s assumed (in the first place) that its the car drivers fault. Cycling UK membership includes access and support from a firm of solicitors that have cycling incident experts. I’ve never had to use it, so don't know how good it is, but I always have the card with me when I’m on the bike.
getting hit by a car is really something you don't want to happen to you in the UK, especially with the complete collapse of the NHS and the whole country as a whole
The first crash you described happened to me.i wait to turn left when driving if a cyclist is behind me to let them past or if they are a long way back I can turn safely without hitting them.
Same and a badger 🦡 as well
oh man they're big too!
