  • For the first Alternate History scenario, we have a mini-scenario. Jutland. The greatest clash of battleships and the last of the great gun duels. Often pointed at in World War One alternate histories. But, really, could Germany have won the battle? And even if they had...would it change all that much?

But HMS Vanguard was at Jutland ! She was a St. Vincent class Dreadnought which exploded in Scapa Flow in 1917.

Although Beatty was a terrible fighting admiral, he was a very good political admiral.
As 1st sealord he did see the RN through what would be its darkest hours in the early 1920s,
and actually be around to see the Nelsons started, built and commissioned something that would later prove invaluable, as well as being present for the negotiation of the Washington Naval Treaty. which would leave Britain as a leading naval power.
That said, Jutland would have gone quite differently *if* he hadn't been present.

He also caused a pretty big internal schism within the RN because he relentlessly tried to put down Jellicoe and make himself the hero of Jutland. Which didn't fly with a lot of the senior RN

With beatty in charge its a wonder they didn't.the man was a fool .he chose flag signals over more modern means of communication. He chose rapid fire over safty .he neglected the 4 most powerful ships in the world which he had at his disposal. The man was an idiot

Correct, the four of the five (QE Herself was not there) were definitely the best BBs in the world at the time. They displayed vastly superiour gunnery to the Battle Cruisers, but were delayed twice by Beatty.

@@davidharner5865Well, he certainly could not tolerate the BRN defeating the KGM forces without HIS 'masterful' direction!
You can't win a medal, THAT way!
That's what you get with an aristocratic system; by definition, corrupt, and sub-optimal, AT BEST!

I agree with your assessment of Beatty. However flag signals did have some advantages, they were quicker because of the need to send messages for transmission etc and broke radio silience. I suggest the underlying problem was that Beatty's flag lieutenant who was responsible for signalling in the fleet was incompetent. After the war Beatty said the the man had cost him three victories - why did Beatty keep him in the job?

    I really like the video
Who knows maybe the pommern has some people survive as it might be less dangerous to rescue survivors with a damaged royal navy

If the Germans had won at Jutland they would have won World War One. Churchill was right when he observed that Jellicoe was the only man on both sides who could have lost the war in an afternoon. If the Germans had decisively defeated the Royal Navy, the British Isles could have been comprehensively blockaded by the High Seas Fleet. England would also have been open to invasion. Without naval superiority the British would not have been able to continue the war.

I like simple ideas, like if blucher was in the med, and still got to Constantinople ( I know, the Goeben was faster, Blucher might not make it ). Then at Dogger Bank, no German ship was lost, so you had Goeben at Jutland.

What was Germany going to do with a smaller and battered fleet trying to break out the Royal navy Blockade or set one up of their own along with the German U Boats?. The British had answers for all the possible German later actions, eventually taking back control of the North Sea anyway. And the U.S> was going to enter war as well.

Germany did win Jutland on the sea.Later they gave Britain as big victory by hardly going out.Big flaw trying to protect their fleet.

Germany did NOT win. Historians agree the Battle of Jutland was "inconclusive". Britain commanded the sea's before Jutland and still comanded the sea's the day after Jutland.

Gaz, there's numerous types of "victory" you know? Look up famous battles and sometimes you'll see one side credited with the "tactical" victory and the other side the "strategic" win.
Germany technically DID win in their aim to sink RN Frontline units. The RN won in keeping the "Hochseeflotte" penned in.

No, the Royal Navy won Jutland. At the next morning the Grand Fleet was standing off the Jade ready to fight. The High Seas fleet wouldn't be ready for action for months. In fact, the high seas fleet was extraordinarily lucky.

Best case for the Germans would be an even higher British dud shell rate, and defective ordinance causing lots on in battery detonations, and ships colliding and sinking in the confusion.

Now, i admit i havent watched the video yet, but due to the title i assume you either think it was a draw or a british victory, it wasnt. Allthough numerically smaller the German force inflicted heavy losses on the british, losing less ships, way less tonnage and way less men. People say it was a draw because strategically it didnt change anything, which is correct, but the big tactical victory brought the Germans and British a little more on even fotting. I think the Germans should have exploited this victory and tried again to force a decisive battle, which they would have maybe again won, since not only the loser learns. Maybe thats what you said in the vid, but good day to you

You must be high!!! Seydlitz sank coming back into port, the rest of the German battlecruisers were unfit to fight, and the British would have liked nothing better than another round ASAP! Scheer was smart enough to admit that they were very lucky, and wanted no part of a rematch. While I agree that, tactically, the German navy could claim victory, strategically they were done. It was comparable to Coral Sea in WWII. The Japanese sank a larger carrier, but they did not complete their objective. Neither did the Germans at Jutland. The British made a habit of losing battles, while winning wars, for centuries. Jutland was definitely a British strategic victory.

@@edwardstevens6787 A fine take, the Germans tho could have attacked ones more after repairs, which they wanted to do in October 18, but that was way to late. And A little Note, Seydlitz was scuttled, but it would have sank eventually of course
