If you ever get a chance I'd love to see the Ampeg compared against it's Crate cousin the GX-130C. The Crate is voiced a little darker according to the manuals, mids @ 900hz instead of 1k.
I have the Crate GX-140C, basically the VH's clone brother. The mid is a bit different that the VH. It's actually called "SHAPE" rather than mid. It should have been called "SCOOP" because turning clockwise is less mids and counterclockwise is more mids. I don't know what the db range of the control is, but it is DRASTIC.
@@micahj9828 Those ones just list 'proprietary circuit' and don't give any details, at least according to the manual. Mine lists "mid 19db @ 900 Hz" In the Ampegs the mids are focused at 1kHz. I'd love to hear how mine sounds compared to yours because there appears to be revisions to the circuit over the years. The controls are aimed at different frequencies depending on the version.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 I also have a GX2200 & it seems to be just a 200 watt version of the GX140 without the chorus. and stereo outputs. It's manual says 10db range @1kHz. (Oddly enough, it also says bass @100Hz and treble at 6kHz. What a strange spread.)
@@micahj9828 The early Ampegs (SS series) have the bass at 100 and the mids at 1KHz, but the highs at 2k, the VHs at 3.5. My GX lists them at 5, which is the same as the old Crate G series.
I have an Ampeg SS-150 , absolutely love your videos on these solid state amps! I appreciated your take with them. If people tried these to their own thing without the dimebag or NOLA hype they'd love them regardless. Only thing I've noticed is the Ampeg's need a little more mids where the presence knob on the Randalls boost them so you can scoop mids.
Josh WW thank you for the kind words Josh! and ppreciate the sub! Ya I’m having a lot of fun with them. Dude the Ampeg is so much fun, whats the difference from the SS-150?
@@brokenlevelmusic I know there's a few Ampeg models 140-c , SS 150, and your VH150. I run my SS150 with a Fortin 33 but used to use a metal zone. Both are crushing! I think the ampegs need a little more mids because there no presence knob where the Randall has a presence knob.
Josh WW oh cool, ya I hear ya. Have you heard of the Depth Finder by Amptweaker? Have tried it on the Ampeg but it gives the randalls some extra balls.
@@brokenlevelmusic dude that's fucking nuts! I've hunted the depth finder forever! I even contacted the company. Their sold out everywhere! I run a Fortin 33 in front of my ampeg , looking to get a depth finder. If you stumble across one please hit me up! Dude on the real your killing shit! Your tone is incredible.
This is really good content... hope your channel grows. The Randall had the best sound to me because it carries a little more bottom end. The Ampeg distortion ends up in on the sizzle end (they always have). I still love the old Ampegs though
I thought the Randall had more attack than the Ampeg, though the distortion on the Ampeg sounded hotter, almost like the Randall would with a slight overdrive in front.
@@brokenlevelmusic ha good to know! I've heard the Randall is super loud, which I always found surprising considering it solid state and only 100 watts. How do they compare to a tube head for loudness?
That Ampeg was thick n brutal. Tasty! Ever check out the pedal version of the amp from S&K pedals, called the VHD? I own one and it delivers the same shizz.
The Ampeg sounds better then the Randall in my opinion. Tone is subjective, but I am sure many people also agree. The Ampeg VH140c/150 heads > Randall 80/100ES heads in tone.

I have the RG100es and full Dime rack and would love to run that 140 through the mix.

@@brokenlevelmusic its crazy to me that more people don't fuck with these ampeg heads , their so crushing. Its such a tight blown up sound.
I’ll take Ampeg for 100 Alex !
Liked both amps… but the Randall has a little more going on and just sounds more to my liking. I’m sure both mixed together would be really good.
Thanks for sharing man👊🤘
Had the 140c. And the Rg before. A 6 band eq in the loop makes the ampeg almost twice as loud and tames the highs. Great amp.
Nice, I’ll have to try that out🤘🏼
Re-watched this vid right now and couldn't help but notice how the Ampeg delivers the same amount of gain at 4 as the Randall does at 9, lol.
I know dude, In that other vid ampeg gain is 3-4 and od808 is at 25%

Thanks man! You’ll like my new video this Sunday🤘🏼
Both good. Either one would work. I bet that ampeg would pair well with a triple rectifier
Been on the hunt for a VH150 for awhile, finally gave up and got the 100es.
Ya there’s a lot more out there🤘
I am in the minority based on past cmts, but I like the Randell better. Just me \m/
OfficialSNMvids right on thanks for stopping by and sharing, I love em both🤘🏼
Both sound beautiful. I have the VH140c and would love an RG100es or Century. May I ask what drums were used on this please? They sound great 🤘🏻
Thanks man, ez dummer🤘
God this makes me miss my VH140C! 😭 Had to sell her in the mid 90s, and I never should've done it.
Ya they’re tough to come by these days!
i love that you cut the A/B in the middle of the riff; so many people cut it when they change riffs and it’s so hard to hear the difference
Right on man👊
both are cool but I think I prefer the Ampeg. sounds a bit more rowdy
the ampeg sounds little more evil in the low mids, i really like it
I thought the Randall had more attack than the Ampeg, though the distortion on the Ampeg sounded hotter, almost like the Randall would with a slight overdrive in front.
Solid State is Crushing. I love that shit.
Great video man! I'm curious; which one is louder?
Both😂🤘

Yes I actually just reached out to the guy to see if he’d loan me one for a Demo! I want to compare them side by side🤘🏼
@@brokenlevelmusic Nice! Hope that works out for you. That would be a great video!
is the Ampeg also close to Dimebag tone?
Don’t think so
This is sick

Greetings from Germany
Thanks for sharing and for the sub Dominik👊🏼🤘🏼
wtf I thought Ampeg was ........... some amp they used back in the day, 60s & 70s. ........now THIS^ shows up sounding better than the Randall imo
VH150 easily, it sounds much more open/airy and seems to fit better in a mix, the RG100es sounded congested imo.
Thanks for weighing in👊🤘
The Randall is very thicc and mid rangey, while the Ampeg is the personification of evil, with thinner surgical strikeage in the notes.
Haha Thanks for sharing man! And for the sub👊🏼🤘🏼
No 2 Randall’s sound the same. I have 2 Randall power amps as well as my rg100ht and a few rg80 combos, they are slightly different from one another.
Right on Don! Thanks for sharing🤘🏼
Ampeg all day
I regret selling my rg100es so bad. Had the original fs5 foot switch too. Fuck my life
bummer man, ya they are a lot of fun
The ampeg sounded better in this video.
Peter Machado Thanks for the comment, agreed👊🏼🤘🏼
That ampeg sounds terrible you should sell it to me.
Haha keep an eye out🤘
