I just want to sew WIGS & sew Clothes. I'm a beginner but, I want a machine that can Do Both!!! I've only made 2 blouses in Home-economics, over 30 years ago. My mom sews by hand. She's made curtains, furniture apolstry, by hand. She's had a Sewing Machine before & made my first Cougarett Uniform, when I was in JR. High. She stayed up all night, making my uniform. I appreciate my 87 yro. Mom. I know you're right in this video, because my Mom said the same thing. Thank You So Much & God Bless you.
Here’s my Take-a-way on the
essential sewing machine features:
- full rotary hook
- solid state electronics
- universal pressure
- needle threader
- tri-motion
- larger opening

+
basic stitches :

Thanks for listing everything out especially the stitches she listed them off way too quickly at the end lol
Thank you so much for this list!
I am buying one to my wife for Christmas and you just made my life so much easier. Well thought, thanks!
thank you for this list ❤️
God bless you
I'm so glad you went into such detail, theres no machine shop close to where I live and as a complete beginner I've asked around in sewing forums and none of them are telling me what I should look for...instead they ask me what i'm looking for....I DONT KNOW, I'M NEW TO THIS. :( Anyway, i'll keep this list in mind and look around online again. Thank you!
Ive just recieved my Mothers machine, Singer, made in Italy 1974. Learning how to use it...going to try make a dress for the wife.
Wow my birth year. I hope it came even better then you anticipated. Happy Sewing.
@@Angel_Hearted50 It's not easy to get the front tummy part of the dress to sit taught and flat and the "Boob" part to fit right, Mine ended up wrinkled on the tummy bit and "saggy" on the boobs necklace/cleavage area. I was disappointed, it looks really easy. but it isnt. Maybe i'll get the impetus to have another go in winter. Thx for the reply.
@@thesecretsquirrel5935 , how about making clothes for kids, first? Kids are less lumpy than adults. So, you should get the feeling of success easier.
Look up Nancy Zieman on UA-cam. She taught sewing on TV for several decades and has a lot of info on how to alter patterns. Nancy passed away a few years ago. But, her videos are fantastic.
@@kimberlycooper4170 Thanks for the advice, shall look that up ! Since that comment i've managed to make a skirt for the wife, A Kilt for my Mum and a school skirt for my little girl, she's 4, Tiny....your right. Her skirt was dead easy ! As a guy...I love the ladies "Curves" but bloody hell its hard to make clothes to fit those curves :D
Amazing video. It's been 30 years since I sewed using my mother's Bernina. You showed me exactly what I needed to know about modern machines. Thank you!
I just bought my third sewing machine in my life. I appreciate all of the features you talked about and looked for them. You are a very good sales lady.
Very informative & helpful.
I always warn friends to be wary of big box sewing machines especially because tbey are plastic inside.
Thank you!
Excellent information (and, you are entertaining also! ). You provided some information never covered on many other informational vids. The only issue was the visibility of what you were discussing (i.e. "The hook").... the camera did not adequately show what you were talking about. I can figure it out by going thru my own machine, but, it would be nice to be able to see what feature/part/item you are demonstrating. Very good info! Thank you! 🙂
Sharon C couldn’t see anything inside thank God I know what she was trying to show not really good visuals
My Brother machine from Walmart works great. Easy to thread, easy to change tension, lots of stitches and under $200. Eight big quilts and five years of projects and it works great. Great for beginners, I bought my daughter one to take to college. Tutorials are easy to follow.
Linda Elmore
It may work great for what you do or occasdional usr,, however the inside frame is plastic and in time, if you use it a lot, it will crack.
Also, after reading reviews and doing tons of research, buying from big box stores or Amazon can be iffy. For every good review there are at least 2 poor reviews, and these are not by experts. You got lucky, and I'm happy for you, but I feel a brick and mortar store with backup professional help wins hands down.
Linda Elmore Can you please provide the model for the Brother machine you purchased. Thank you
@@kayerin5749 hard to do if the stores don't offer the model you want especially when your on a budget as a new beginner🤔
I am new to Sewing just 5 years. I also do embroidery now. I can’t tell you how much I agree with her on buying from a sewing machine dealer and not from a box store. The support is an absolute necessity. Enjoy Sewing
This information was very helpful. For a person with no sewing experience, whose looking to purchase a sewing machine to learn the skill, I truly appreciated these tips.
Ive purchased several machines from my dealer, including 2 Babylocks. They have never explained any of these things to me. Thank you!
The video starts off really wordy.....but stick with it! You don't want to miss the rest, it's really helpful. Thanks for sharing all of these great tips.
I am so excited to have found your channel. I’d consider myself a beginner intermediate-sewing a longtime but finally now have time to really get into some great projects. I want a real machine and have been researching. No other channels get into quality like you do. Soooo happy. I am going to binge watch your videos today since I finally have a free day! Thanks so much!
I used my old Bernina 117K (made in 1938/39) to make all my own clothes, and all my kids clothes. It still works, but it's heavy, and I'd need a table to install it in, and I'd love to do that, but my lovely daughter found a little used Pfaff. I'm using it, and I'm glad I've got it, but it's hard to get used to. I guess I have a lot of old muscle memory of the more industrial machine. Also, I learned on my mom's industrial machine. I have a lot of those stitches, and am getting used to using some of them, but I don't have the scissors or the stop/start buttons. It's fine, and I'm lucky to have it, and everything I see about new machines, helps me understand it a little better. Thanks for posting this great information.
Thanks for such great recommendations. I am looking to upgrade a 30 year old Pfaff. The needle threader was what convinced me to purchase.
I am sew happy to have found you! You have answered questions that are so important to know before buying a sewing machine. I've learned a lot. Can't wait for your other videos. Thank you for being there!

sew happy xd
I enjoyed your very informative video... reasons to purchase from a dealer and special features like automatic needle threading, needle up/down, thread cut at end of sewing, speed control AND that push button to begin sewing rather than a foot controller... I think Nancy used a Babylock on her PBS programs... thank you for your great video!
What to get:
1. Metal full rotary hook
2. Solid State Electronic (1-2-4 layers of denim)
3. Universal Pressure
4. 1 step button hole
5. Have 7 basic stitches
6. Needle Threader
7. Needle down
So does #1,2,3 actually say it on the box? How do I know? I don't have any sewing stores near me.
A full metal rotary hook will be standard for almost any adult sewing machine
The solid state electronic and universal pressure I’m not entirely sure.
where did you buy you;r?
What does a 51 year old man who has never used a sewing machine in his life but is interested in learning how to taper his own shirts and shirt sleeves do while at home during coronavirus quarantine? Watch this video that’s what. Very informative video even if some of it was way over my head.
Hashtag Just a dad I hope you let us know how it goes!! It's a lot of trial and error, and good on you for trying something useful
Lynda Anthony the best seamstresses start this way-out of necessity!! Dresses are a LOT more fun than masks!!!
I can tell this woman is very knowledgeable and passionate about sewing. Will be buying a machine from the website soon!
Thank you very much for this wonderful video! I am a seriously raw beginner and do not know a thing about sewing machines!
Are there any machines that you would recommend with these features for beginners?
I just advised my SIL on buying a new machine...she is a beginner. I told her above all...buy from a DEALER! No Amazon or big box purchase under any circumstances for a sewing machine! They are there when you need service, always.
Thank you forever for this tutorial, so happy I decided to stop by again. Good information to know/have when I go shopping for my first real machine. (I am a grandma beginner.) Just subscribed!!
Thank you so much for sharing your passion,I'm looking for a sewing machine to gift to my wife,I'll be using your advice!

Thank! you so much; For that information! Now I know what to look for when buying my machine!
I love, how funny and entertaining you are. Would love to buy my new machine at your shop! Keep up the good work and your humour :)
I have an old Brother sewing machine. It’s not plastic :). They don’t have parts for it anymore. They don’t even have records of ever making it, according to Brother lol. The one thing it doesn’t have is a walking foot. I tried a universal one from a sewing machine store and it wouldn’t work. So if I was shopping that’s one feature I’d look for. Thx for your videos 😀
forthetruth have you tried Googling your machine? Probably a silly question, but I needed a manual for a knock off machine from Japan, made years ago. Sure enough someone had it and told me a dealer who sells xerox copies!
I've just brought a brother machine from Walmart cause there wasn't a store that carried what I wanted. It's important to get the proper settings, stitches ect but if your a beginner and don't know how long you'll be interested in sewing or how often your gonna sew then I don't think it's a good idea to buy a "good" machine that costs couple hundred dollars or more then end up sitting in your closet for the rest of it's life. Hopefully I'm lucky and the model I chose will last me couple years then I can upgrade to better one after graduation😂
Excellent information and it is really helpful for a novice like me. I will look at you site and machines.
I am a beginner and just received a Singer 2277 machine which I ordered and have to get supplies, material, and thread I will need to do the job with. A top of the line machine wasn't what I was looking for since I don't plan to make this a money making business using the machine and just got interested after the COVID-19 pandemic. I already have an older pedal type machine which belonged to my grandmother, but never used it though.
I’m sorry happy looking to learn how to sew that machine you just demonstrated what’s the name off it and how much it cost maybe can get sewing classes with you guys
Love your video. What are the 7 stitches to do recommend a sewing machine to have?
Thank you for explaining what a full rotary hook is!
These things are not mentioned in the descriptions anywhere. How do I know whether a machine has these features?
If you buy from a dealer you just need to ask.
If you buy from a big bix store, there is no one to ask. But, the machines in the big box stores are made for big box stores, even though they may have the brand name & look exactly like one at a dealer. They are most likely plastic inside instead of metal like the ones at a dealer.
Thank you for an absolutely amazing video. Keep up the good work!
I just bought a janome 740dc machine i really like it
How much is this sewingmachine in this video? I am looking to buy a new one
THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL VIDEO VERY HELPFUL!
I challenge you to do a comparison video of a cheap Btother $70 machine and a better machine. Also to do a review of a Brother cheap sewing machine.
Excellent presentation. Great speaking skills, knowledgeable, time wenr fast.!
I wish you had a list of the requirements so once can copy it and take it to the store with them. I am in the market for a new machine but not one that will cost me four figures, there has to be machines out there that are good and don’t costa a mint.
Hello there...I am new to your channel and I must say, this one was great!!...I am a person who is very interested in beginning to learn to sew right from step one....I took notes on the types of things I should look for in a machine and I'm going to begin looking for one that is in my very minimal price range.... Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this information. I would like to buy one
Hello! What is the sewing machine model in this video? Thanks for great information!
I have a BL Brilliant and it replaced the Katherine. Same features and its a workhorse.
Very easy to operate.
I love her she's so sweet and helpful
Please, how do the stitches you are recommending translate to the Juki HZL-NX7?
Neat trip with the tape holding fabric
Thank you so much. Wish u were here to work with me!
I am thinking of getting a new sewing machine as I would like to make some quilted things, not a king size spread but things. I would like a machine that would not skewer my fabric sandwich and would be comfortable sewing thicker than a piece of cotton fabric. Could you recommend something for me please. I do not have thousand to spend but would like some of the features you went over. Thank you for the video, it was fun and informative.
I like the machine..what is the model of the sewing machine
Marichu Cantalejo It says right on the machine.
As she mentioned the small m machine us Molly anx as shown in the larger one, ig says Katherine.

Is the Empisal Expression 889 Sewing Machine a good machine?
I got it and had issues with my after a few uses. But maybe it was just mine. Now I think will just to Brother or Singer products.
excellent - i am sending my sewing group this link.
Super Helpful!! Much Appreciated!!
Super helpful video! Thank you!
Baby lock does not make the Katherine anymore 😞 how is the jubilant?
So what are the 7 stitches? overcasting stretch, straight stretch, blind hem...
new friend here thank you so much for sharing this.
I have seen advertising in the local Wal-Mart on their sewing machines and I want one, but want to be careful about which brand I buy and the model as well. If you was in Arkansas and selling selling machines I would want to look at the brands you are selling and see about receiving classes on operating it.
Please, I need to know the best overlock machine to use it at home and how much
Got some Great ideas for some Clothing,All Fabrics
In addition to me previous comment, I live in Georgia so there's no way I can come to your dealership. Help, please!
Eye opening and so informative. I live in Nigeria and would like to buy the sewing machines in this demo video as a beginner: The Molly and the Babylock brands. Cant find them anywhere around these parts. Can you help me with a link to them or sometime...
You can buy Brother machines from a dealer (if you have them in Nigeria) and some of them are the same as the Babylock but cost a lot less. They are made in the same factory and the differences are very small.
Thanks! This is such an informative video
This is so informative
thank you so much for the amazing guides
How can I purchase the machine you are explaining...?
I called Brother about one of their machines. They told me that the machines at Walmart are exactly the same as the ones at all stores, inside and out. PE770.
Not true.
Yes, they'll tell you that. The machines make LOOK the same inside and out but the internal parts are more cheaply made and much less durable. And I actually love Brother machines. I have two of them in fact, but both purchased from dealers.
@@ellenhofer3343 model numbers from one store to another are the same. However, most dealers only sell the upper end models whereas big box stores sell the lower end models. The big difference is price and naturally the cheaper ones are not going to contain better materials found in higher end models.
This women is a boss
Thank you. You are so lovable...
Hello
Is there a machine brand now you recommend I’m a beginner but I want to be able to do everything but I want a machine it can grow into until I’m ready for embroidery ready or advance sewing machines
I have ordered a machine from their and I have not gotten it yet. That was May 18 the next day they sent me an email telling me that they didn’t have it and they didn’t know if or when they could send it. I have tried to call and they hang up every time I try to call. Good luck with that company!
Please call us again we are having phone problems, machines are sold out across the world we are doing our best. We have plenty in stock maybe we can switch you out for a different model. Please call us again we are here for you.
Sew It Online I tried calling today June 2 . I was on the line for over 20 min. I finally gave up. I will call again tomorrow. I hope we can work something out. I want a good machine. If not I would take a refund to my PayPal account. Thank you
I just purchased my first machine. I bought a Singer Simple 3337. Was that a good purchase
Is brother A150 good for home use
Excellent video. I am a binnger sewer not sure what sewing machine to buy? I would like to sew canvas an jeans an other facbrics can you direct me on which sewing to get please.
I would buy an all metal vintage Kenmore or Singer machine they have the backbone to sew those type of fabrics the plastic junk they make today will just jam and give you trouble!
So, with these features, what machine could I buy for my wife, we live in England.
Great help. Thank you so much
Accost : aproach and speak to a person .

Protection or Saport.
What is your opinion of the Janome Hd3000? Grate video thanks
I would love to afford a BabyLoc Machine ! If you sew, would be a good idea to invest in a good machine...
Thank you. That was very helpful
Is the machine in your demonstration the Baby Lock Presto II?
I'm looking to pay 200 or less. I'd like the 3 quality systems you metioned: metal rotary hook, solid state electronic & universal Pressure. I want the 7 basic stitching & one step needle threader. How much will that cost?
On g pork
What is the Molly?
Good day Sharon, does the Singer Simple 3221 be recommended?
I"m looking at your online webpage and the only affordable sewing machine left in your store has plastic bobbins. :(
Plastic bobbins doesn’t determine the quality of the machine, the type of bobbin has more to do with tension. Unless, your preference is to have metal bobbins. Usually they don’t do metal bobbins in a metal case because of the friction.
If the Katherine discontinued, which one replaced it? Looking to buy
Yea i can't find it either
I read today that the Baby Lock Brilliant replaced the Katherine.
Thank you for the demonstration. I have never used a sewing machine. I am thinking of using it as a hobby and maybe make something nice. are these machines sold in best buy? or PC Richards stores? I love to see how you can make a professional stitch I had no idea that a machine can even do that the side way stitch. wow the stitch I see on clothes bought from Saks fifth ave.how much are the machines for someone who has not a clue how to use and would like to learn? I would ask you about silk chiffon fabric, is this a fabric that is hard to sew because it stretches? I wanted to make a kaftan out of black silk chiffon material. there is a lot to it maybe it is not so hard to learn. where do I find a pattern for a man's kaftan?.
thank you best, Lawrence
Hi Lawrence - The machines in this video are the (excellent) Baby Lock brand and only available from dealers unless you find (as she suggested) a used, reconditioned model. I've been sewing for over 60 years and have used MANY machines, from those built in the late 1940's to a massive, modern Brother brand electronic quilting machine that does everything including the sideways stitch, which I rarely use. DON'T look for a machine in Best Buy! It would be just like buying at Walmart or Target, etc. Those machines are specifically designed for that market and are junk. You'll spend $69 to $100 or so and when it breaks down (and it will), it will most likely not be repairable and you'll end up buying another machine. A waste of your hard-earned money! Use Google and look for a Baby Lock or Brother dealer in your area, visit them and ask to see their simplest mechanical and simplest computerized machines. Look for the features mentioned in this video, particularly the speed control and the needle up/down feature; they're a big help for beginners. Both Baby Lock and Brother make excellent machines. Often dealers have wonderful, refurbished used machines and the prices are reasonable. Quality is worth the price. And be to sure they how you how to CLEAN your machine - if done regularly, it will save you a lot of beginner heartaches.
Silk chiffon is NOT a fabric for beginners. I'd suggest you ask the dealer to show you some cotton gauze if they have it. It will have a nice drape and is semi-sheer. It's not exactly the easiest to use either, but if you're determined to try, it's a better choice. Dealers usually sell patterns too so ask them to show you some for menswear. Good luck!
p.s. You won't need the sideways stitch - not as a beginner.
What is the name of the sewing machine you are working with?
Thank you so much for your informative video. I'm in the process of buying a sewing machine for the first time. The only experience I have on using a sewing machine was back in grade school when I took a home economics course. Now that I'm in my 50's I'm interested in taking up sewing as a hobby. What would you recommend in a computerized machine with all the features you suggested? I need a basic machine that is priced reasonably. The machine does not need embroidering or quilting capabilities. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Not sure if you know of a dealer here that you would suggest? Thank you for your time and consideration. Nancy
I have the Brother Simplicity 3150 which is basically the exact same machine as the Babylock Katherine in the video. Brother has discontinued the SImplicity line but the machine is made in the same factory as Babylock and is almost identical, but it cost quite a bit less. So, you can get a dealer model Brother (many types)and get a great value, not the big box store versions. GOod luck and happy sewing!

@@lalainenavidad3523 Did you try to leave a reply because it did not show up!
True. Brother makes lots of machines that are essentially duplicates of Baby Locks. I have a Brother VQ3000 that is the EXACT same machine as a Baby Lock Crescendo, it's just "decorated" differently out the outside and they have different names for the same features. I know this for a fact because once when I was in a Baby Lock dealer I examined a Crescendo. The only true difference is the price. The Crescendo costs more. And yes, they are often made in the same factories. Actually, I believe they are two branches of the same company.
@@PibbleMom297 I read that the owners of Brother and BabyLock are actually Brothers!!! Kind of an unintended pun, I guess! Not to put down Baby Lock but why pay twice as much for the exact same machine? The Baby Lock Brilliant is basically the twin of the old Katherine which is the twin of my machine; it may have a few more stitches but I don't see any other differences besides the aesthetic, which I admit is nicer on the Babylock.
Hi my name is CindyHelmuth and I would like to have a sewing machine I have an old singer that isn't been working for quite a few years use that on leather I would like to help out with making masks I saw you on ABC this afternoon and I am so thankful for what you're doing could you please let me know how much the machine is second machine that she was working with a cost or where I can get it so that I could start helping out either that cops here in Zimmerman or the school hospital and bus company that I work for in Princeton Minnesota I would appreciate it very. 😷
