Omg, Aneka is getting younger and prettier, puppy love is here to stay. Aneka is always right, but I am experienced in repair and purchasing. For new sewers, always buy used machines, yes more than one. One with automatic buttonholer, and have that be a straight stitch with some features if you can get them like the pressure button on the top of the machine for the presser foot as this button is most important in all your work to have the right pressure. The second used machine is one that has the correct height foot for what kind of work you will be working on and the feet you will be able to buy. I have a super high foot kenmore manual (non electronic) and a regular short shank too, as electronics break and manual machines some with pattern cams will last forever with no worries. My third is a used (non electronic) manual pattern cam Bernina record 830 or any used Bernina as you will want to do embroidery and Bernina is your good machine you do not want to trash making boat covers or tents with-save your best machines for your best works and do not ever trash your Bernina, ever or I will find you. Embroider and show off your best works of art with a fine machine like Bernina. I find great old used machines at yard sales, thrift stores, second hand stores, and other used item stores. AND NEVER BUY A MACHINE THAT HAS A DENT ON THE BODY OR CASE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS BEEN DROPPED EVEN ONCE, EVER! Because after fixing many machines I know that there are several models that have small protruding parts from the inside that are very fragile and are cleverly designed to break in my (Husqvarna) opinion, never will I ever buy one. To make it as simple as possible here is the rule. You and your friends buy only old used machines to trade with each other for a few years, then and only then will you know the machine you love and what you will want to do with it and sell off the ones you learned on. I found out I love a twelve dollar old Singer machine that is very basic and my Bernina too, the Singer was twelve dollars used and the Bernina was $225. American dollars. But the fun is in finding out how they sew and what you like about them. You may find like I do that I always am looking for a showcase machine to admire and sew on but mostly admire as the others do the real work. Find the sewing machines you like most, it does not have to be expensive at all and it may take a while to find "the ones", but you will know it when you sew, it looks perfect and it is perfect and it sounds perfect. It does typically have to have one amp of power for enough power to use all day, and for a display sewing machine like a Singer Featherweight just be glad you have it. Remember to enjoy sewing, please give your machines to someone who will if you do not enjoy it. We even have the beautiful and charming lovely Aneka to show us the way, let's go as far as we can with lovely Aneka and her lovely instruction.

The three most favorite features that I have on my Brother machine is the automatic needle threader, the push button thread cutter, and the needle ending in the down position. Thank you for your tips as well.
My first sewing machine (that I'm still using) is a old and clunky Kenmore that only does straight stitch and zig zag. I think one of the benefits of starting out with an old and well-loved machine is that you can get those all-metal fully mechanical machines that offer great reliability and great quality, and come to realise on your own what features you wish you had. It didn't cost me anything to obtain this machine from a grandmother, I found the user manual for the same product line in another grandma's stash, and I have several different feet available for the machine. I've made several quilts/blankets on it, I've started working on some basic garment sewing with this machine, and now I have a list of features I wish I had and can begin saving to purchase a newer computerized machine.

Thank you Aneka, by following your tips I chose the Bernette b77. I am a COVID sewist, new to sewing thanks to COVID. I bought an old (beautiful condition) 1962 Elna SuperMatic as I didn’t want to buy something new in case I didn’t continue on with sewing. Not only have I continued on, I love it and seem to be alright at it too! I decided to upgrade as I was beginning to delve into different fabrics and techniques. I researched, read reviews, watched reviews and videos (this one and some others) and went and looked in stores. I would have loved a Bernina, however I’m saving one of those as my ‘next’ machine. However considering bernette is the bernina sister brand, I may never upgrade 😁 Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge, happy sewing!

The 116 is exactly like the white one in America only it’s black. I guess maybe they complained and now it comes with the modern foot pedal. But the Husqvarna is a beautiful machine to work with and sews wonderful 🥰 I love your channel too awesome work 😀

I am learning on a singer 3232 which is for £160 a good one with the possibility to move the needle nice zigzag and others stitch a nice foot, totally flunked some but still is doing now getting a good knowledge of how with what at present. but I haven't yet put my head on how to use threader of the machine, I just do it myself. I loved the advice given as when I feel ready for a better machine and have the projects going up then I will definitely go to a dealer and not on Amazon as I did for the singer. I chose singer because it is on one I started on when younger.
I just bought a janome sewing machine from Costco for 400$, by the time it arrived I had already started my sewing class and had an idea of how to do it. I have already sewn a pair of shorts, and I’m working on a messenger bag for my class. On the side I have been able to tailor a dress that was too big on me. It works great, not too expensive but also a sizable price to pay for a hobby. 30 stitches, some buttonhole features, 10 different feet, and I just learned to do something called overcast stitching, which is similar to what a serger does , and I instantly was happy about this feature.
Thanks for the tips. I'm newly retired and want to sew again after many years away. I still have my old Frister + Rossman machine but it no longer zig zags and I'd like to have automatic button holes. Your tips are really helpful, and having found your channel I think I'll be doing some revision! I've done dressmaking, curtains, toys, soft furnishings in the past but other than making aprons for my granddaughters during lockdown I've done no sewing for years. Yes, I have been watching the other videos and they are incredibly helpful! I remember a lot of the basic things from elementary school handiwork classes (we learned sewing, knitting and crocheting and other crafts) and from watching my mum sew. But I really appreciate all the detailed videos on specific issues like french seams that I never learned and some things that I had already almost forgotten. Made to Sew I actually upgraded it to the pfaff Ambition 620 and I have found it to be a good machine, I worked as a garment technologist for many years working abroad and here in the UK so I have used many types of manual and automatic machines in my time, I just love anything to do with the garment industry. I have my sister's 1987 Bernina 1130 and it still works great. It's Bernina's first computerized machine. I doubt any modern computerized sewing machine last 40 years. Most sources I read say 5 years on average. Considering they cost $$$$, 5 years is not enough. Every mechanical machine (no electronics, uses knobs) has multiple stitches and easy to change width and length.
Such a good video. I tend to sew slower, as I feel the machine I have is not designed to run quickly like a commercial sewing machine. I have noticed people at sewing club tend to go too fast, and this results in a very shaky sewing table. My guess why this happens is the machine is not well balanced in its workings.
@@MadetoSew But you have a nice machine. I had the chance to buy a very nice machine, but being a newbie I wasn't sure about it. I found it at a thrift shop. It was complete and in its red suitcase. It was a Bernina and they where asking 25 dollars for it. I think I missed a bargain
Enjoyed hearing your advice and reading all the comments. I'm looking to replace my electronic Brother that seized up in the middle of a quilt. I have 2 back up mechanical machines which stitch well, a Singer Fashion Mate 237 and a Janome jw5622. I miss the needle down and speed control of the Brother. Having a serpentine stitch is another trait that I want in a new machine as I use that stitch often when quilting. I will probably go with a Janome when they are back in stock.

A really informative video Aneka. I wish something like this had been available when I started sewing! My first machine was the Ikea sewing machine for £45! It looked like a fisher-price toy! To be honest, it performed like one too! Then I graded up to a brother one that cost about £250 and tbh I dont rate that one either - I took the advice from the shop I bought it from but knowing what I know now I wouldnt chose that one. Then I had the fancy one that everyone had with the blue front, which is a good machine but had sensor problems and now I have a higher priced one which I am very happy with.

But I agree, I haven't owned one but have seen a lot from customers in classes. The basic models that I have seen, I wouldn't rate because of the problems my customers have had with them, but the more expensive models are fabulous and they have some incredible new technology. I know with some brands they don't make all of the models in the same factories, I have heard of some brands outsourcing the cheaper or base models. Maybe they do something like this? We may never know, but at least you are really happy with your machine now. Aneka x
@@MadetoSew I know the machine I have (Brother Innovis NV1800q) is the same as one of the babylock models and someone told me thats because Babylock and Brother are made by the same factory, I dont know if there is any truth in that but Ive heard of some older machines (think vintage) that were designed then sold under a number of different brand names.
Ah that's interesting, I don't know about where you live but I don't see much about Babylock sewing machines in the UK. I have their overlockers, but I was shocked when I went to the USA to see how many sewing machines they also offer. I think you could be right, because I am sure my mechanic told me that the overlockers aren't made in the same factory (or by the same people), as the sewing machines. All very interesting! :-))
Great video and very well explained thank you. I am definitely going to put at least £200 in my first sewing machine. I am a complete beginner so would not know what to check if I were to buy a second hand one so will stick with brand new options. Think I've narrowed the list down to Janome, Brother or Singer but if any of those brands raises a red flag would love to know please 🙏🏽 :) from what I've seen online they seemed pretty decent!
Thank you. My preference on those brands (from what I have seen) would be Janome. I generally find they perform and work better (with a variety of different fabrics), at the £200 price point too. 😊

I have been sewing for years and I have now decided to treat myself to a really good new machine but didn't know where to start. Your tip about deciding exactly what you want the machine for was very useful as I found myself getting carried away looking at bigger and bigger machines. I got my sewing machine from my grandmother (Vintage sewing machine). I am still a beginner and it sews only a straight stitch. the reason why I decided to get a new one is I need a zigzag stitch to make garment but I feel it still early to buy one. I would like to hear what do you think.
Why do you need a zigzag stitch? Do you want to use that to finish the edges of your fabric? You could instead use other seams like a French Seam, Flat Felled Seam, Binding. I don't think you need to rush to get another machine, especially as a beginner. Get some use of your grandmother's machine first, and if you love your new hobby then maybe you can upgrade? Aneka

hi, im looking for buying a sewing machine for swimwear but im not sure which one and usually they tell u to buy 2of them, and i don't understand why, is it not possible to use only 1? also which type of sewing machines would you reccomend for swimwear? lingeries,etc?
Yes, for swimwear you will probably need an overlocker (serger), and a cover stitch machine as well as a sewing machine. Of course the sewing machines available really depends on your budget. I don't believe you can make really quality swimwear with 1 machine. You will need at least 2 ideally the 3 above. Aneka 😊

Probably the first place to start when choosing a sewing machine is to consider what budget you need to work within. How much do you want to spend? Have you seen this video, I recommend some beginner machines at the lower price range? ua-cam.com/video/i0ePqNFTN5E/v-deo.html If you want to spend more, both machines I show in the video, Bernina 790, or Bernina 350 would be suitable for cosplay. They are able to sew thicker fabrics such as leather etc without an issue. In my studio, for classes we use Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116 or 118 and I have taught leather jacket classes on these so they could be an option at a slightly cheaper price point.

What a great video! As my old singer from the 80's broke I bought an Eva machine. It just didn't feel right. I now changed it to Emerald 118 (Thank god the store had a 3 month changing policy) and I have been very happy with it. Eventhough there are others better ones, I think the basic stiches are good, it is easy to use and the pedal is so much better than with Eva. For me the speed control has been one of the best things - it makes me NOT to sew fast, which is my problem. 😂 So you can use it with students like me who can concentrate only few seconds and then rush away... Sorry I don't know exact weights. You don't want it to be super lightweight. If you are purchasing a Mid range sewing machine it will automatically be heavier. A cheaper model may be much lighter. I recommend (if you can) that you visit a shop and pick up a few in your price range then choose which works for you.
I haven’t actually tried the Vibrant Serger so I can’t comment. But when I googled it I found out that are Babylock. Therefore I would imagine they are very good. I have 2 Babylock Imagine Sergers they are over 10 years old and great machines. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Hi there! Thank you. 🥰 It really depends on your budget. You don't need to pay very much to get something good. Equally you could pay a lot of money and have some fancier settings and maybe a machine that might last longer?! In terms of the brands I would look at Janome. But if you want to pay more you could look at Bernina. I have also got a Bernette I have been trialling which is very good and not dissimilar to the Husqvarna Emerald machines I love (but I don't think they are made anymore). The overlock stitch is what you would use to finish the edges of those fabrics. You could either use the overcast stitch on a sewing machine or purchase an overlocker/serger. Is that what you meant? The last machine in the video is what I would choose. Janome 230DC How are you using the overcast stitch to finish the edges of fraying fabric? On some machines you can back stitch with this stitch to prevent that.

I am not sure if the specifications are the same. Are there any specific features we should keep in mind while purchasing a machine? I have only used a manual machine so far.

I think I talk about the 5 things I would look for when purchasing a machine in this video. You can still purchase a manual machine, it doesn't have to be computerised. But with the Janome machines I have used I think these computerised ones are better. I think one of the things I share in this video is the ability to move the needle from side to side, this is a good thing to have.
Yes 100% I would say Bernina over Viking if you want a top of the line machine. In my opinion they are better machines at the top price point, but this is my opinion from the customers machines that I see in classes and the machines that I have tried over the years. Hope this helps. Aneka x

My honest opinion is that I don't like the cheap Brother machines that much; I don't find that they sew my customers work together that well (in the classes that I teach). I have a singer 3333 that is still new, do you think it is worth having or should I return it and get a better one? Hi there, sorry to hear about your Janome and the struggles you have had with your sewing machines. It will really depend on your budget and whether you can find something else that works for your budget? The Singer 3333 is quite a basic machine and I would probably suggest getting something a bit sturdier if you want to sew a variety of fabrics. Personally I would look in the second hand market too, you might find something that is in your budget but better? Let me know how you get on. Hello Aneka, thank you for your video. Very helpful. I am kind of new to sewing and I have a basic Singer machine. I want to upgrade in the near future and want to find something that is worth spending more money on. I make doll clothes and one thing that bothers me with my machine right now is the fact that when I am sewing such small clothes when the needle goes down in the hole to sew, the fabric goes with it into the hole. Is there a feature I should be looking for when buying a machine that will prevent this from happening? Thank you very much
Hi Gabi, lovely to hear your story. You should be able to purchase a single hole stitch plate, this will only work with the straight stitch. But most machines will sell them as extra, or you may be lucky and have one provided. This will mean that there is a tiny hole under the needle, rather than a larger gap suitable for sewing a zigzag. Hello, I don't see that many Elna machines in my classes (I believe they have been taken over by Janome now). I had a 1-to-1 with a lady last week that had an Elna machine from the year 2004 she thinks, and it was great. No complaints. I did an internet search of the Elna 2007 to see if I had seen one before, I found this review: threadcarefully.org/2010/12/08/why-my-elna-sewing-machine-is-bad/ (take it with a pinch of salt), but it might be worth a read. Can you try out the machine before buying to check you are happy with the stitches and functions you need? Aneka

Hi Aneka, love your videos! I bought a W6 machine a month ago and the tension is not correct and I don't know what more I could do to fix it! I re-threaded the machine in case I did it wrong, I adjusted the tension (the needle thread was showing on the wrong side) and it's now at the maximum it can be and it's still not ok! I'm thinking the problem might be the thread? It's really thick somehow... Anyway any advice would be really appreciated! Edit: I wanted to say that I watched your video on tension problems and I did all the things you suggested... to no avail!
Hi Julie, I am so sorry you are having problems with your machine. If you have followed my tension video, then it could be down to the thread. I would purchase a quality thread that isn'y too thick first. A polyester Gutermann thread, or a well known brand would be a good starting point. If you are still having problems, you could look at the bobbin tension? But you would probably be worth taking it into a professional to get them to give it a once over. Can you take it back to the shop you bought it? You shouldn't be having problems if it's threaded correctly. I hope this helps? I know it's very frustrating when it goes wrong. Aneka x

Return this machine, it must be examined inside to see if the plates are installed properly, sometimes the screws or plate part is left out by the robot and the inspector is on permanent retirement because it is cheaper to have machines come back than to inspect for return defects. Farmed out work is what causes problems like you see here. Made in a sweatshop by slaves or a robot. This is an example of always to buy machines with tension on the outside.

Embroider and show off your best works of art with a fine machine like Bernina. I find great old used machines at yard sales, thrift stores, second hand stores, and other used item stores. AND NEVER BUY A MACHINE THAT HAS A DENT ON THE BODY OR CASE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS BEEN DROPPED EVEN ONCE, EVER! Because after fixing many machines I know that there are several models that have small protruding parts from the inside that are very fragile and are cleverly designed to break in my (Husqvarna) opinion, never will I ever buy one. To make it as simple as possible here is the rule. You and your friends buy only old used machines to trade with each other for a few years, then and only then will you know the machine you love and what you will want to do with it and sell off the ones you learned on. I found out I love a twelve dollar old Singer machine that is very basic and my Bernina too, the Singer was twelve dollars used and the Bernina was $225. American dollars. But the fun is in finding out how they sew and what you like about them. You may find like I do that I always am looking for a showcase machine to admire and sew on but mostly admire as the others do the real work. Find the sewing machines you like most, it does not have to be expensive at all and it may take a while to find "the ones", but you will know it when you sew, it looks perfect and it is perfect and it sounds perfect. It does typically have to have one amp of power for enough power to use all day, and for a display sewing machine like a Singer Featherweight just be glad you have it. Remember to enjoy sewing, please give your machines to someone who will if you do not enjoy it. We even have the beautiful and charming lovely Aneka to show us the way, let's go as far as we can with lovely Aneka and her lovely instruction.

My first sewing machine (that I'm still using) is a old and clunky Kenmore that only does straight stitch and zig zag. I think one of the benefits of starting out with an old and well-loved machine is that you can get those all-metal fully mechanical machines that offer great reliability and great quality, and come to realise on your own what features you wish you had. It didn't cost me anything to obtain this machine from a grandmother, I found the user manual for the same product line in another grandma's stash, and I have several different feet available for the machine. I've made several quilts/blankets on it, I've started working on some basic garment sewing with this machine, and now I have a list of features I wish I had and can begin saving to purchase a newer computerized machine.

Thank you Aneka, by following your tips I chose the Bernette b77. I am a COVID sewist, new to sewing thanks to COVID. I bought an old (beautiful condition) 1962 Elna SuperMatic as I didn’t want to buy something new in case I didn’t continue on with sewing. Not only have I continued on, I love it and seem to be alright at it too! I decided to upgrade as I was beginning to delve into different fabrics and techniques. I researched, read reviews, watched reviews and videos (this one and some others) and went and looked in stores. I would have loved a Bernina, however I’m saving one of those as my ‘next’ machine. However considering bernette is the bernina sister brand, I may never upgrade 😁

The 116 is exactly like the white one in America only it’s black. I guess maybe they complained and now it comes with the modern foot pedal. But the Husqvarna is a beautiful machine to work with and sews wonderful 🥰 I love your channel too awesome work 😀

I am learning on a singer 3232 which is for £160 a good one with the possibility to move the needle nice zigzag and others stitch a nice foot, totally flunked some but still is doing now getting a good knowledge of how with what at present. but I haven't yet put my head on how to use threader of the machine, I just do it myself. I loved the advice given as when I feel ready for a better machine and have the projects going up then I will definitely go to a dealer and not on Amazon as I did for the singer. I chose singer because it is on one I started on when younger.
I just bought a janome sewing machine from Costco for 400$, by the time it arrived I had already started my sewing class and had an idea of how to do it. I have already sewn a pair of shorts, and I’m working on a messenger bag for my class. On the side I have been able to tailor a dress that was too big on me. It works great, not too expensive but also a sizable price to pay for a hobby. 30 stitches, some buttonhole features, 10 different feet, and I just learned to do something called overcast stitching, which is similar to what a serger does , and I instantly was happy about this feature.

I still have my old Frister + Rossman machine but it no longer zig zags and I'd like to have automatic button holes. I have my sister's 1987 Bernina 1130 and it still works great. It's Bernina's first computerized machine. I doubt any modern computerized sewing machine last 40 years. Most sources I read say 5 years on average. Considering they cost $$$$, 5 years is not enough. Every mechanical machine (no electronics, uses knobs) has multiple stitches and easy to change width and length.

Such a good video. I tend to sew slower, as I feel the machine I have is not designed to run quickly like a commercial sewing machine. I have noticed people at sewing club tend to go too fast, and this results in a very shaky sewing table. My guess why this happens is the machine is not well balanced in its workings.

Enjoyed hearing your advice and reading all the comments. I'm looking to replace my electronic Brother that seized up in the middle of a quilt. I have 2 back up mechanical machines which stitch well, a Singer Fashion Mate 237 and a Janome jw5622. I miss the needle down and speed control of the Brother. Having a serpentine stitch is another trait that I want in a new machine as I use that stitch often when quilting. I will probably go with a Janome when they are back in stock.

A really informative video Aneka. I wish something like this had been available when I started sewing! My first machine was the Ikea sewing machine for £45! It looked like a fisher-price toy! To be honest, it performed like one too! Then I graded up to a brother one that cost about £250 and tbh I dont rate that one either - I took the advice from the shop I bought it from but knowing what I know now I wouldnt chose that one. Then I had the fancy one that everyone had with the blue front, which is a good machine but had sensor problems and now I have a higher priced one which I am very happy with.

@@Penguinandpear Thank you Claire. I did write something very similar and then removed it as didn't want to be rude towards Brother. But I agree, I haven't owned one but have seen a lot from customers in classes. The basic models that I have seen, I wouldn't rate because of the problems my customers have had with them, but the more expensive models are fabulous and they have some incredible new technology. I know with some brands they don't make all of the models in the same factories, I have heard of some brands outsourcing the cheaper or base models. Maybe they do something like this? We may never know, but at least you are really happy with your machine now. Aneka x
@@MadetoSew I know the machine I have (Brother Innovis NV1800q) is the same as one of the babylock models and someone told me thats because Babylock and Brother are made by the same factory, I dont know if there is any truth in that but Ive heard of some older machines (think vintage) that were designed then sold under a number of different brand names.
Ah that's interesting, I don't know about where you live but I don't see much about Babylock sewing machines in the UK. I have their overlockers, but I was shocked when I went to the USA to see how many sewing machines they also offer. I think you could be right, because I am sure my mechanic told me that the overlockers aren't made in the same factory (or by the same people), as the sewing machines. All very interesting! :-))
I had a lower end Brother machine for many years... I finally gave it to Goodwill because I could NOT bring up the bobbin thread

I am a complete beginner so would not know what to check if I were to buy a second hand one so will stick with brand new options. Think I've narrowed the list down to Janome, Brother or Singer but if any of those brands raises a red flag would love to know please 🙏🏽 :) from what I've seen online they seemed pretty decent!

I got my sewing machine from my grandmother (Vintage sewing machine). I am still a beginner and it sews only a straight stitch. the reason why I decided to get a new one is I need a zigzag stitch to make garment but I feel it still early to buy one. I would like to hear what do you think.
Why do you need a zigzag stitch? Do you want to use that to finish the edges of your fabric? You could instead use other seams like a French Seam, Flat Felled Seam, Binding. I don't think you need to rush to get another machine, especially as a beginner. Get some use of your grandmother's machine first, and if you love your new hobby then maybe you can upgrade? Aneka

Yes, for swimwear you will probably need an overlocker (serger), and a cover stitch machine as well as a sewing machine. Of course the sewing machines available really depends on your budget. I don't believe you can make really quality swimwear with 1 machine. You will need at least 2 ideally the 3 above. Aneka 😊

Probably the first place to start when choosing a sewing machine is to consider what budget you need to work within. How much do you want to spend?

If you want to spend more, both machines I show in the video, Bernina 790, or Bernina 350 would be suitable for cosplay. They are able to sew thicker fabrics such as leather etc without an issue.
In my studio, for classes we use Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116 or 118 and I have taught leather jacket classes on these so they could be an option at a slightly cheaper price point.

What a great video! As my old singer from the 80's broke I bought an Eva machine. It just didn't feel right. I now changed it to Emerald 118 (Thank god the store had a 3 month changing policy) and I have been very happy with it. Eventhough there are others better ones, I think the basic stiches are good, it is easy to use and the pedal is so much better than with Eva. For me the speed control has been one of the best things - it makes me NOT to sew fast, which is my problem. 😂 So you can use it with students like me who can concentrate only few seconds and then rush away... Sorry I don't know exact weights. You don't want it to be super lightweight. If you are purchasing a Mid range sewing machine it will automatically be heavier. A cheaper model may be much lighter. I recommend (if you can) that you visit a shop and pick up a few in your price range then choose which works for you.
What's your opinion on the Vibrant Serger sewing machine?
I haven’t actually tried the Vibrant Serger so I can’t comment. But when I googled it I found out that are Babylock. Therefore I would imagine they are very good. I have 2 Babylock Imagine Sergers they are over 10 years old and great machines. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

It really depends on your budget. You don't need to pay very much to get something good. Equally you could pay a lot of money and have some fancier settings and maybe a machine that might last longer?!
In terms of the brands I would look at Janome. But if you want to pay more you could look at Bernina. I have also got a Bernette I have been trialling which is very good and not dissimilar to the Husqvarna Emerald machines I love (but I don't think they are made anymore).
The overlock stitch is what you would use to finish the edges of those fabrics. You could either use the overcast stitch on a sewing machine or purchase an overlocker/serger. Is that what you meant?

The last machine in the video is what I would choose. Janome 230DC How are you using the overcast stitch to finish the edges of fraying fabric? On some machines you can back stitch with this stitch to prevent that.

I think I talk about the 5 things I would look for when purchasing a machine in this video. You can still purchase a manual machine, it doesn't have to be computerised. But with the Janome machines I have used I think these computerised ones are better.
I think one of the things I share in this video is the ability to move the needle from side to side, this is a good thing to have.

Yes 100% I would say Bernina over Viking if you want a top of the line machine. In my opinion they are better machines at the top price point, but this is my opinion from the customers machines that I see in classes and the machines that I have tried over the years. Hope this helps. Aneka x

My honest opinion is that I don't like the cheap Brother machines that much; I don't find that they sew my customers work together that well (in the classes that I teach). Yes I think that’s a great idea. I would often recommend second hand over new, you get a lot more for your money. And as long as it’s been looked after it should be good for a long time. Good luck!

Hi there, sorry to hear about your Janome and the struggles you have had with your sewing machines. It will really depend on your budget and whether you can find something else that works for your budget? The Singer 3333 is quite a basic machine and I would probably suggest getting something a bit sturdier if you want to sew a variety of fabrics. Personally I would look in the second hand market too, you might find something that is in your budget but better? Let me know how you get on. I want to upgrade in the near future and want to find something that is worth spending more money on. I make doll clothes and one thing that bothers me with my machine right now is the fact that when I am sewing such small clothes when the needle goes down in the hole to sew, the fabric goes with it into the hole. Is there a feature I should be looking for when buying a machine that will prevent this from happening? Thank you very much
Hi Gabi, lovely to hear your story. You should be able to purchase a single hole stitch plate, this will only work with the straight stitch. But most machines will sell them as extra, or you may be lucky and have one provided. This will mean that there is a tiny hole under the needle, rather than a larger gap suitable for sewing a zigzag. Hello, I don't see that many Elna machines in my classes (I believe they have been taken over by Janome now). I had a 1-to-1 with a lady last week that had an Elna machine from the year 2004 she thinks, and it was great. No complaints. I did an internet search of the Elna 2007 to see if I had seen one before, I found this review: threadcarefully.org/2010/12/08/why-my-elna-sewing-machine-is-bad/ (take it with a pinch of salt), but it might be worth a read. Can you try out the machine before buying to check you are happy with the stitches and functions you need? Aneka

Hi Aneka, love your videos! I bought a W6 machine a month ago and the tension is not correct and I don't know what more I could do to fix it! I re-threaded the machine in case I did it wrong, I adjusted the tension (the needle thread was showing on the wrong side) and it's now at the maximum it can be and it's still not ok! I'm thinking the problem might be the thread? It's really thick somehow... Anyway any advice would be really appreciated! Edit: I wanted to say that I watched your video on tension problems and I did all the things you suggested... to no avail!
Hi Julie, I am so sorry you are having problems with your machine. If you have followed my tension video, then it could be down to the thread. I would purchase a quality thread that isn'y too thick first. A polyester Gutermann thread, or a well known brand would be a good starting point. If you are still having problems, you could look at the bobbin tension? But you would probably be worth taking it into a professional to get them to give it a once over. Can you take it back to the shop you bought it? You shouldn't be having problems if it's threaded correctly. I hope this helps? I know it's very frustrating when it goes wrong. Aneka x

Unfortunately I bought it online but I could try to find a shop dedicated to sewing and ask them if they can recommend someone to look at it. My main problem is I live in Germany and there's the problem of the language barrier ;) I wish I saw this video before buying it though! Thanks for your help!

Return this machine, it must be examined inside to see if the plates are installed properly, sometimes the screws or plate part is left out by the robot and the inspector is on permanent retirement because it is cheaper to have machines come back than to inspect for return defects. Farmed out work is what causes problems like you see here. Made in a sweatshop by slaves or a robot. This is an example of always to buy machines with tension on the outside.
