What Do You Need to Wear Kilts Full Time? The right attitude, intestinal fortitude, and an assortment of base colors of your choice. I have six and hope to get a seventh in a base blue sometime soon. Above all, wear them proper and proud!

I wear a kilt basically 24/7. I have 2 old kilts that have been retired for public use, but wear one to sleep in, which comes in handy when I have to take the dog outside at 0dark-thirty.

If you wear the same kilt with different tops and accessories, it won’t look like the same kilt you wore yesterday, even if it was. Variety.
A black sporran ad a brown sporran allows for both black and brown footwear. Typically, the belt, sporran, and footwear should be in the same color scheme.
Me personally, my Utilikilts are my beater, knock-about-town, daily-wear kilt. I save my tartans for more dressy occasions.

I recently found this channel after finding out for nearly 30 years of my life I was partly swedish.
Now its 2023 and I found out I'm part scottish.
Personally, I will proudly wear a tartan waistcoat for formal or parties, not a kilt.

I have around 10 kilts with 2 more on the way... I ware them everywhere every day.. Each kilt is unique in its own way. I have some the casual PV type, some are the 5 yard wool, some are the full 8 yard 13 oz some are 16 oz, some pleated to the set some pleated to the stripe..I love them all. I come from a prominent clan so there are a lot to choose from. I do on occasion get a universal or even a designer/ fashion kilt. I plan on getting more. Growing up ..and where I live there are a lot of indigenous people, along with many Russians, and people of various religious sects all wearing their cultural/ religious clothing. I had always gravitated towards the Indian culture and at times had wished I were one.. Being white..I always felt like a man not only without a color, I was also without a culture. Yes I am an American first and foremost, but where did I come from? I knew because of my last name I was either Scottish or Irish. I didn’t know which country my immigrant forefather came from. I am now retired and in my 60s. A year ago my only living aunt told me My immigrant forefather came from Scotland and gave me one of my life’s greatest gifts. My Roots, My cultural heritage, I now celibate it daily!

My only kilt at present is 5-yard wool in a tartan that isn't even tied to my ancestry but to the same name (Isle of Harris). I do want to get a PV Anderson modern, and I'd love to get a nice grey tweed and a PC eventually, but the latter pieces are such an investment. I was kind of surprised to find that a black tie ensemble would be cheaper than a less dressy outfit.

Agree with all the advice put forward. I believe the underlying thing is to always go for quality and correct sizing, even if it is a minimal highland-wear wardrobe, and to take profession advice on your decisions. It's easy to squander good cash on cheap stuff you will end up being unhappy with, look cheap, and eventually dump anyway.
For example sporrans. The next essential after the kilt. Choose a daywear sporran that has soft or semi-flexible (not stiff) leather. There's a lot of cheap horrible imported stuff like cardboard you should keep clear of.

A lot of clans generally have 3 tartans. I'm mcpherson and we have 3 .the hunting tartan is my favorite. Ancient is the brightest the dress kilt is nice but not my taste.

I own eight or so, including one five yard stretch of fabric that I can fold into a great kilt.

If I were to only go with one belt and sporran for daywear, they would be brown instead of black. Brown is the more traditional daywear leather color, especially in the US, typically black leather would be worn in the evenings and not in the daytime. And, there is no rule that you have to have a belt at all. I typically will not wear a belt on most days unless I am wearing a dirk, and then, I have a custom made 4” wide brown leather belt for my dirk.
Another alternative if you want to just have a single sporran that works for both daywear, and for dress occasions is a nice full mask badger sporran.

8 kilts, dozen flashes, 3 belts with buckles, 7-8 kilt pins, 4 sporran, 8 pair hose. Do I need a 12 step program? Lol

I’m all in now… have three wool kilts in the post now (Family: Smith, Stewart, Wallace) and a few utility kilts that I’ve been wearing pretty much daily since 2020.

I actually get away with skipping even the belt.
I live in Sweden so i often wear a thick army sweater ( matches the green in the tartan ) that would have covered the belt anyway.
Daytime sporran, black hose, matching green flashes and sturdy shoes gives it a ” regimental” look.
Mainly a budget thing though. I would have loved a full Prince Charlie ofcourse.

I decided to go with one set of leathers, brown, because my good boots are brown. Since I only have one sporran, I opted for a hunting style.

Hmm. A lot depends on the material. Most kilts are acrylic, poly viscose, wool blend or pure wool. Acrylic is horrible, don't touch it. It pills and will not keep shape. Poly is good for everyday and it will machine wash (fragile setting, cool wash) and drip dry (do NOT spin).. The problem starts with wool because wool needs to be relaxed between wears and of course, cleaning is more difficult. A woolen kilt should really be relaxed on its hanger for 3-4 days at least after wearing. But they both look and feel a lot better. There is a slight price advantage in wool blend over pure wool. I have three poly kilts and three pure wool. That didn't break the bank and allows plenty of flexibility.

I want to do this I would wear my clan tartan during week days. Then wear the the Jewish tartan to synagogue and be a bit more dressy on Shabbat and holidays. It might also be a good idea to add some more Universal tartans to your wardrobe.

Interesting. I only own utility kilts and dove in at one for each day of the week. 7 kilts, 6 different colors, one standard weight in black one lightweight in black for hotter days. I keep the heavier black one for more proper occasions. My go to ones are khaki and woodland camo in large part bc they’re the most versatile colors and they require the least ironing. But I plan to buy a semi traditional in Black Watch from USA kilts when I have the cash, so I’ll have a proper semi formal option. I have a cheap day sporran and a utility sporran with pen pockets and a cell pocket but I much prefer my much cheaper day sporran. I have the 2.5 inch leather belt too but I’ll wear whatever depending on my outfit. A nicer belt and buckle as well as a nicer sporran from USA Kilts are in the plans too.

Why would anyone not wear their clan kilt? I wouldn’t wear the kilt of another clans kilt, unless you have 2 different clans in your family like I do.

You can wear any Tartan you like. If you're concerned about it, write the Clan Chief and formally ask permission explaining that you admire it and are learning as much as you can about his clan and Tartan as you can.

What are the most friendly kilt wearing States? Pa seems friendly, but wearing a kilt in the mid Western States does not seem so friendly.
