    Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do for tourists coming to Rome who are interested in art, architecture, churches, museums, and the history of ancient Rome. I am a tourist interested in all time periods of the history of Rome and Italy, and have been in Rome a few times but never more than five nights at a time. This time we will be there for two weeks in February and I am so grateful for your help. I only recently discovered you in my planning process a couple months ago and you have been enormously helpful! You have a delightful style, Very positive and insightful, and the passion that you have for sharing the wonders of Rome is palpable. Thank you thank you!

      @@Romewise I wanted to circle back to you to thank you again for all of your help for tourists planning more in-depth trips to Rome. You are so dedicated to helping people have the best experience and your knowledge is truly impressive and invaluable! Thank you so much for sharing it! My sister and I were in Rome from the end of February to 15 March, and it was not too busy and due to having done all of the advanced planning, we never had to stand in line and every day was a joy, full of wonderful discoveries! I am especially grateful to you for your videos on some of the very early churches. Early Christian Rome is a marvel. I have been to Ravenna twice, but I had never seen the early gorgeous mosaics in Rome. I knew about some of the churches and was planning to visit them, but you made me aware of several others. We are very grateful. Il mausoleo di Costanza was a marvel. We visited the Basilica of Sant’Agnese Fuori le Mura, Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Santa Maria in Trastevere, Santa Sabina, Sant’Anselmo all’Aventino, Santa Pudenziana, Santa Prassede, San Clemente, and others. Your tip on visiting the Vatican museums from mid-afternoon on was right on! We first visited on an early morning tour which included St Peter’s so that we wouldn’t have to wait in line in the piazza of St Peter’s to get into the basilica, per your info. As I have visited the Vatican museums before (never on a tour) I was disappointed as they move you so quickly and we didn’t get that much new info. I couldn’t believe how inadequate the info provided was in le stanze di Raffaello. Fortunately, I am quite knowledgeable about that. (We took a semi-private tour with LivTours.) However, it was worth it to go right into St Peters (where we left the tour when they were going to exit) in order to spend a lot more time there, including to go downstairs and to the Treasury. We knew in advance that we would be going to the Vatican museums on our own on another day and your tip caused us to buy tickets at 2 pm and we went right in, just as you indicated. I could go on and on. Your passion for sharing and helping others is wonderful! I am one of thousands and thousands of grateful tourists, I am sure! I am still watching your videos in order to return to Rome virtually and to think about the next trip. My sister also sends her warm regards, thanks, and best wishes! Roberta Cook

      @@robertacook6558 Hi Roberta! I just went back and re-read your original message. You were so kind when you let me know you were using my advice to help with your February trip. And I am extremely grateful that you have taken the time to come back here and let me know how it went! I'm so pleased you and your sister had such a wonderful visit. I love that you spent 2 weeks here and got to see so much. As you have discovered, Rome always has something new to see!.
      I'm thrilled you went to Santa Costanza on my recommendation. It's a very little-known church but so important in terms of art, architecture, and Roman history, not to mention Christian history!
      It sounds like you got to also visit a lot of the lesser-known churches around Rome - some of my favorites!
      I'm also happy to hear you had such great experiences at the Vatican by using my tips. I feel bad for so many who have awful experiences there. Often, just a little knowledge and planning in advance can make all the difference!
      I hope you will come back to Rome and keep exploring. I assure you I am not done sharing secret spots and special places to see! Thank you again, so much, for your kind comments and for taking the time to write them!

    If the marble map was made in the 3rd century and the Noli map was made in the 18th century, and they mostly match up, means that the layout of Rome didn't change much in 14 centuries.

    THE MAP MAY HAVE BEEN USED AS A FORM OF TAX COLLECTION INFORMATION, AND CENCUS TABULATION

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  7 місяців тому

      Yes, that's true, it was one theory for its use. But most scholars agree there were likely cadastral maps on papyrus for this purpose, and they suggest that this marble map was purely decorative, as it was too big and too high up off the ground to see clearly.

      Rome can be "quieter" in early winter but the more the season gets closer to spring, the busier it gets. I was at the Vatican museums on Monday and it was wall to wall people. The Vatican and Colosseum are often crowded year-round, but definitely Rome is busier in February than it used to be.
