That kind of tourism is horrible, worst than a zoo. It is not necessary to interact with animals.

The humans are required to keep a certain distance away from the gorillas. However, if the gorillas choose to come to them, it's better to sit still and remain quiet, so as not to alarm them or call the attention of the silverback. These trekking expeditions provide a significant amount of money that goes towards protecting the gorillas from poachers, and also towards helping the human population in surrounding villages. It helps to educate the local children about the importance of conservation. Ergo, the kids will grow up and be more interested in helping to conserve gorilla populations. It is not worse than a zoo. At least here, the gorillas are free, and able to leave a situation they don't like at any time. They can't do that in a zoo. Not sure how you think this could possibly be worse than a zoo. The gorillas came up to the humans, it wasn't the other way around. They're not legally allowed to approach the gorilla, and if they got up and took off, it could startle them and then the silverback would get involved. They're not known to harm other creatures, but a gorilla display can be frightening, even though it's almost always just to intimidate. My only issue with trekking is the fact the humans should be wearing masks. Gorillas and other apes can catch anything we can catch, but they don't have the same level of immunity in order to fight illnesses off the way we can. Other than that, the people weren't doing anything wrong.
