They have good reason to be scared, even if you put aside all the weird bullshit they've gotten into.
I feel like Professor Pericles at this point can be charged with war crimes or even crimes against humanity. This freaking parrot killed multiple people in cold blood, engineered bioweapons, and fused himself with an Eldritch horror!
I would certainly say Pericles' pursuit of the Entity and the actions performed in said pursuit would hundred percent count as war crimes. Hell, the flesh eating cows could count as bioweapons, already violating the Geneva Convention, as would gunning down Marcie (killing a non-combatant). The love potion from the Aphrodite episode would also count for chemical warfare, and it was the bird who came up with the formula for it.
Freeing an imprisoned eldritch horror would go more onto a cosmic court where literal gods would be the judges and not human court. How would prison break be viewed toward such entities?

Honestly, these videos are really damn entertaining to watch through. Crazy to think how close the gang has almost gotten genuinely killed multiple times throughout the franchise. Only place I can think of going from here is maybe the various Scooby Doo movies or the other spin-offs but, who knows really
So, someone else already did a video counting up Pericles's (among the other villains') sentences, I'd just like to compare the two counts! This count: 17 life sentences 60 356 years in prison Other count: 63 life sentences 275 years in prison 5 death sentences 60 650 dollar fine Honestly? even though the number of life sentences are so different, the actual prison time more than makes up for that. As for the death sentences, I think that's just a difference in researching crimes that are eligible for the death penalty. and the fine... I mean, does Pericles even have or care about money? Overall, I prefer this count's total!
I cannot tell you how glad I am that you narrate these. Basically everyone else who does these either just plays clips or uses text and it's so hard to watch like that. I love that you actually go through and explain the context while throwing in some good quips.
Prisioner 1: "why are we cleaning a stupid parrots cell" Prisoner 2: "I don't know but its making wei'd noises.." Professor: * doing a spell and makes the 2nd guy hit the first guy with the mop with bird poop * Prisoner 2: "YOU SON OF A-" * attacks the 1st guy * Professor: * laughs watching them *
Wouldn’t Dr. Zin and his daughter also be charged with the attempted murder of mystery gang and Blue Falcon and Dyno-mutt by way of a remote detonation and countdown that would have not only exploded the island but also kill everyone there if they didn’t get out in time? Also, on the Scare-Bear one, wouldn’t Vincent Firman be off Scott free since most of crimes were on Destroido land and Sheriff stone said that since it’s a private sovereign land he couldn’t arrest anyone? By that count, would Mr. E be held guilty for attempted murder by way of the bomb?
it probably could've been, or at least some reckless endangerment, but they had the means to escape in time, so it's all good. as for scarebear, i don't recognize corporations doing anything to help themselves, so it's all fair game. in fact, i'll charge destroido with creating a monopoly
Sometimes I'll be talking to people about how Mystery Inc is peak and then casually drop that Velma's nerd GF gets gunned down by nazi robots and they look at me like I'm high off my ass
The 'Slavery?' charge would officially be human trafficking, if I understand things right. That's up to 10 years+$10,000 per kidnapping, add 10 more years+$5,000 for 'inappropriate adult reasons' for doing it, and it would be up to 25 years+$25,000 for anyone under 18.
I thought that Mr. E stole the engine for the Mystery Machine, since it would make no sense for the Gator People to steal it since they don't want anyone there, they would just attack and scare them off like the family in the beginning.
sentences usually don't stack. they're served "concurrently" (at the same time). so, getting one year on X and two years on Y doesn't mean you serve three years. you'd serve two. i know it's way funnier to stack them, but i work in law so i had to say lol
everything you said was correct, especially the part where it's way funnier to stack lmao. also, congrats on working in the law field, hopefully you do some great stuff :)
A couple of errors from your What's New Scooby Doo sentencing video. Wu and the acrobats didn't kidnap Shaggy and Scooby. Mei-Ling did that to save them. Also Drill Sargent Pain wasn't after the gold in Fort Knox. He was after the Goldade formula so he could take over the company.
i took it as they kidnapped them and kept them with her inside the dragon, but perhaps so. and for the sergeant, yeah gold/goldade. probably gets an extra extortion charge
I hope this isn't the end as there are definitely more than just three Scooby-Doo shows out there with villains that I would love to see you cover in this series soon.
Regarding Crybaby Clown and Baylor Hotner, they are ironically voiced by both Luke and Anakin Skywalker. Mark Hamill voices Crybaby Clown and Baylor is voiced by Matt Lanter.
Btw, you can count Pericles also culprit in helping the mayor blackmail the old gang and having tortured Mr E with a remote and the evil entity could be responsible by basically everything bad happening in Crystal Cove so the entity could be charged with every crime on the list
This has always been my favourite Scooby Doo series. Mystery Inc's villains were awesome (although I'm still not sure how Rung Ladderton engineered that Ghost Truck to drive around with flaming tires).
9:38 I feel like with that one you should’ve treated it a little bit like the old guy since they would’ve got that many years, but in the end, they specifically stated how none of them wanted to press charges so in love being fine 13:18 yeah, you should’ve got harassment. Yes, he was harassing them in their dreams, but he was still seeking them out in a state, where they cannot avoid him so it’s not like online bullying. At least you can just stop being online
The finale hints that Professor Pericles only became evil because of the evil entity influencing his mind, so I can't agree with calling him the most evil character in animation because he didn't actually have agency.
7:11 Even if they Intruder on his property it's still illegal to set up traps intended to capture or, injure or kill people and a lot of them would go to "excessive use of force" in home defense terms.
Practically every one of them would get life or the death penalty, but given how often they just get chucked in Arkham Asylum Gotham must be very willing to believe insanity pleas.
@@CantusTropus It's not just criminally insane sorts. Black Mask is usually portrayed as being a regular at Blackgate rather than Arkham, and he would have gotten the death penalty way back if the justice system in Gotham wasn't so corrupt. For the right price, everything is legal in New Jersey.
I remember when I was first watching Mystery Incorporated when it premiered on Cartoon Network I was shocked at some of the show’s dark moments especially during season 2 the dark moments and other stuff that this show got away with is the reason why Mystery Incorporated will forever be in my top 3 Scooby Doo series along with Where Are You and What’s New
Alright... So, according to my own calculations, if we were to say that: A.) None of the imprisoned are over 50 years old (with some "wiggle room") B.) They all live natural, healthy lives where they get to live until they're about 100 years old C.) There's no chance of parole D.) We don't count their crimes outside of the episode (like the father/daughter supervillain duo) E.) They all count as alive (mostly referring to Danny who dies and Fernando who was already dead) ... Then the final total for the amount of individuals that would live long enough to completely serve their sentence and get out of jail is: 24. Excluding the ones who didn't get any time at all, the shortest sentence was Danny with 3 years, which makes it more sad that he died when he would have (technically) gotten off the easiest. Also, I'm a little sad that you didn't count up the gang's own total at the end. It would have been funny just how many years they would have gotten from trespassing alone.
Considering he is a gray parrot via design, their average life span at the oldest is 50 years, converting the 60.36K years by 50 for average life span. We get rounding upwards of 1,224 Gray Parrot consecutive life sentences.
Danny (S1EP17) is actually getting a LOT longer time in prison, as it's actually illegal to booby trap your house with deadly traps in most states, and at all in others. Katko v. Briney had the homeowners held liable for the damages caused to the trespasser, because it was malicious intent. In Texas, where I live: Sec. "9.44. USE OF DEVICE TO PROTECT PROPERTY. The justification afforded by Sections 9.41 and 9.43 applies to the use of a device to protect land or tangible, movable property if: (1) the device is NOT designed to cause, or known by the actor to create a substantial risk of causing, death or serious bodily injury; and use of the device is REASONABLE under all the circumstances as the actor reasonably believes them to be when he installs the device." (all caps added by me for emphasis) Basically: You can't have something designed to kill. You can't have something designed to seriously injure. and those traps were lethal as hell. I've always imagined Scooby Doo as more of a New England setting, and I imagine some of those states are a bit more strict.
when i saw the title i was expecting a breakdown of everything illegal the gang did, not the villains. this was interesting too though, although you should make one for the gang as well cause i know they do lots of illegal stuff throughout the show. much love
@@ripdalt i guess mostly yeah just like stealing a body in first episode made me think of that. also i know they destroy lots of things including tombstones in a graveyard LMAO
I find it funny how the lady who actually controlled an entire town got a significantly lower sentence than a child who pretended to control an entire town.
9:15 Marion is one of the few, if not only, culprit who technically got away with her crimes. Her husband decided not to press any charges from her actions, as he understood why she did it, and he ultimately agreed to retire.
@@ripdalt At least it was, slightly, better than the time when the Roller Ghoster sabotaged all those carnival rides, and all she got was a slap on the wrist and a scolding from her mom.

The Gators would get out on the technicality that Sheriff Stone didn't have their area within his jurisdiction. Professor Pericles also murdered Ed, Mr. E's assistant. Also, the guy who did the graveyard oil thing has diplomatic immunity.
@@ripdalt Listen, you don't even want to know what kind of damage those mutant cow bees were doing in the weeks after their creation before the universe reset...
I honestly would've figured that Pericles would've been executed for his crimes, especially since he would be classified as a terrorist with a standing army. Also, because. I am at least 93% sure he had ties to the Nazi psrty.
Excuse me, but I think Pericles' sentence should be higher. In the Horrible Herd, Mr. E talks to Pericles about the eponymous herd. In this conversation, E mentions that 29 of his scientists are listed under “presumed missing”, and judging by how one of their screams are heard, I believe the implication is that they were victims of the Horrible Herd, who’s crimes are attributed to Pericles. Maybe there’s something I don’t know about, but I think we should add a couple 29 life sentences to the total. Edit: I don’t know if you had already accounted for this, but in All Fear The Freak, it’s implied that Pericles murders Ed Machine to send a message to Mr. E. So that’s another life sentence, but I’m unsure if you didn’t notice it, or did but didn’t mention it.
i suppose since he's responsible for creating them, he would also be deemed liable for their being "missing" too, but it does seem like it could be passed off as negligence / cruel act of nature
The old mystery incorporated should also get attempted genocide/planning genocide because they were gonna kill all of the townsfolk when they found the entrance go the way to the treasure
I feel like in The Creeping Creatures, it was implied that Mr. E was the one who stole the gang’s engine to encourage them to stay in town and solve the mystery

i didn't enjoy that ending (both for this video's sake and the weird relationship dynamic it would create)
@@ripdalt real cause why he'd forgive her ass like "all is forgiven cause you were doing it for love and you said sorry" kinda story what bs ending is that
@@alliumrose6862It's due to the guy's personality. He does crazy things all the time, so the severity of the crime to him is far less than it would be to someone else.
@@ripdalt Weirdly she's taking some space from him in the Gluten Demon episode and we're made to assume it's his fault when you'd expect him to be slightly more hostile towards her.
Honestly, these videos are really damn entertaining to watch through. Crazy to think how close the gang has almost gotten genuinely killed multiple times throughout the franchise. Only place I can think of going from here is maybe the various Scooby Doo movies or the other spin-offs but, who knows really
thank you, i'm glad you enjoyed :)
damn those menacing charges really really get people
that's the real killer, mostly because the gang is always in a group
It's been a long time coming!!! Pericles finally gets his total sentence
he gets BOOKED
So, someone else already did a video counting up Pericles's (among the other villains') sentences, I'd just like to compare the two counts!
This count:
17 life sentences
60 356 years in prison
Other count:
63 life sentences
275 years in prison
5 death sentences
60 650 dollar fine
Honestly? even though the number of life sentences are so different, the actual prison time more than makes up for that. As for the death sentences, I think that's just a difference in researching crimes that are eligible for the death penalty. and the fine... I mean, does Pericles even have or care about money?
Overall, I prefer this count's total!
ooo i had no idea! that's cool, and thank you for the comparison! as for the money, he might have a stash from a bank robbery or something lmao
to be fair he has served his death sentence
or moreso, lack of existing now sentence
I would argue that shooting an RPG at a busy bridge is probably terrorism
while i can't tell how _busy_ it is... you have a bit of a point
This is probably the most serious scooby series as It had a genuine looming threat.
100%, i don't think any of the others can really match it
Any attempt to sabotage a Hex Girls concert is definitely a crime in its own right.
straight to the shadow realm
What is brainwashing if not just kidnapping with extra steps?
wait you're on to something here
What about blackmail, corrosion, or slavery?
I cannot tell you how glad I am that you narrate these. Basically everyone else who does these either just plays clips or uses text and it's so hard to watch like that. I love that you actually go through and explain the context while throwing in some good quips.
thank you very much! i'm glad you enjoy :)

@@ripdalt Dr. Zin would have a sentence as long as Parricles cuz he's a nemesis of Johnny Quest iirc and has a LOT of crimes on his rap sheet
Sometimes I'll be talking to people about how Mystery Inc is peak and then casually drop that Velma's nerd GF gets gunned down by nazi robots and they look at me like I'm high off my ass
no bc they DON'T GET IT!!!! they'll never understand the torment
You forgot mayor Jones kidnapping Fred as a baby and basically holding him hostage to keep Brad and Judy out of Crystal Cove
yeah, i think so too, but he did raise fred (probably) better than what brad and judy could've
The 'Slavery?' charge would officially be human trafficking, if I understand things right. That's up to 10 years+$10,000 per kidnapping, add 10 more years+$5,000 for 'inappropriate adult reasons' for doing it, and it would be up to 25 years+$25,000 for anyone under 18.
hey, not bad!
Mayor Jones had some nerve to pull off a crime only to be unmasked by his son Fred Jones. talk about being a bad influenced father
i do think he cared for fred, just the treasure skewed his vision
@@ripdalt true
Nah, he used him. Not caring at all.
I thought that Mr. E stole the engine for the Mystery Machine, since it would make no sense for the Gator People to steal it since they don't want anyone there, they would just attack and scare them off like the family in the beginning.
i might've given credit where it wasn't due in that one
Dang this is awesome, now i really wanna see this for A Pup Named Scooby Doo
_if_ i did do another one, that'd be it. i loved that series
Also, this layout is the easiest to see. Super clean dude!
thank you! i had people say if was difficult to read sometimes, so i tried to fix it :)
sentences usually don't stack. they're served "concurrently" (at the same time). so, getting one year on X and two years on Y doesn't mean you serve three years. you'd serve two. i know it's way funnier to stack them, but i work in law so i had to say lol
everything you said was correct, especially the part where it's way funnier to stack lmao. also, congrats on working in the law field, hopefully you do some great stuff :)
don't forget the evil enitiy also was the the reason for the genocide of the native american
i think any atrocity in history can be tied back to evil entity
A couple of errors from your What's New Scooby Doo sentencing video. Wu and the acrobats didn't kidnap Shaggy and Scooby. Mei-Ling did that to save them. Also Drill Sargent Pain wasn't after the gold in Fort Knox. He was after the Goldade formula so he could take over the company.
i took it as they kidnapped them and kept them with her inside the dragon, but perhaps so. and for the sergeant, yeah gold/goldade. probably gets an extra extortion charge
Professor Pericles is getting the chair he is going to die one way or another
noooo he's just a lil guy :)
I hope this isn't the end as there are definitely more than just three Scooby-Doo shows out there with villains that I would love to see you cover in this series soon.
i won't say it's the end, just a small pause :)
Regarding Crybaby Clown and Baylor Hotner, they are ironically voiced by both Luke and Anakin Skywalker. Mark Hamill voices Crybaby Clown and Baylor is voiced by Matt Lanter.
mark hamill is genuinely such a legend of voice acting
For where walks Aphrodite , a prosecutor could argue for her potion to be akin to roofies and other drugs that affect a persons mind
possibly, that's not a bad start to get her some more time
Btw, you can count Pericles also culprit in helping the mayor blackmail the old gang and having tortured Mr E with a remote and the evil entity could be responsible by basically everything bad happening in Crystal Cove so the entity could be charged with every crime on the list
true, but that opens up a whole new can of worms i didn't want to open
You know, it’s so funny that Scare Bear has the most reasonable explanation to be a menace to society aksksks.

I just realized "Battle of the Humungonauts" is an homage to Toho's Showa Era film "War of the Gargantuas"
yes it is! we love kaiju movies :)
U know unless you’re on the outside looking in, u never really realize how ridiculous some of these crimes and motives are.
they're so absurd and sometimes they get let off the hook for no apparent reason
This has always been my favourite Scooby Doo series. Mystery Inc's villains were awesome (although I'm still not sure how Rung Ladderton engineered that Ghost Truck to drive around with flaming tires).

9:38 I feel like with that one you should’ve treated it a little bit like the old guy since they would’ve got that many years, but in the end, they specifically stated how none of them wanted to press charges so in love being fine
13:18 yeah, you should’ve got harassment. Yes, he was harassing them in their dreams, but he was still seeking them out in a state, where they cannot avoid him so it’s not like online bullying. At least you can just stop being online
by that logic, you can just wake up :)
@@ripdalt yeah, but how much sleep they be going back pretty fast whether I like it or not
What a fun video concept! The visuals were awesome!

Y'know i never realized just how dangerous some of these criminals are. They sure do go for attempted murder a lot!
the rocket launcher was where i really was like "damn"
The finale hints that Professor Pericles only became evil because of the evil entity influencing his mind, so I can't agree with calling him the most evil character in animation because he didn't actually have agency.
that's fair. i'm still giving it to him though lmao :)
7:11 Even if they Intruder on his property it's still illegal to set up traps intended to capture or, injure or kill people and a lot of them would go to "excessive use of force" in home defense terms.
that's fair for sure. he got his karma in the end
He's going to get the Electric Bird Cage.

have you thought of doing Batman villains? (the cartoon versions. like Batman Brave and the Bold, Batman animated etc)
i hadn't, but i won't say no 100% to it!
Practically every one of them would get life or the death penalty, but given how often they just get chucked in Arkham Asylum Gotham must be very willing to believe insanity pleas.
@@CantusTropusmaybe the Gotham legal system follows Batman’s no killing philosophy
I remember when I was first watching Mystery Incorporated when it premiered on Cartoon Network I was shocked at some of the show’s dark moments especially during season 2 the dark moments and other stuff that this show got away with is the reason why Mystery Incorporated will forever be in my top 3 Scooby Doo series along with Where Are You and What’s New
hey, that's my top 3 too! i love this series, it's such a good change of the scooby formula, and one that will be hard to top
Alright... So, according to my own calculations, if we were to say that:
A.) None of the imprisoned are over 50 years old (with some "wiggle room")
B.) They all live natural, healthy lives where they get to live until they're about 100 years old
C.) There's no chance of parole
D.) We don't count their crimes outside of the episode (like the father/daughter supervillain duo)
E.) They all count as alive (mostly referring to Danny who dies and Fernando who was already dead)
It would have been funny just how many years they would have gotten from trespassing alone.
hey, that's almost half, that's not bad! also, the gang are simply just meddling kids, they didn't do anything wrong :)
Considering he is a gray parrot via design, their average life span at the oldest is 50 years, converting the 60.36K years by 50 for average life span. We get rounding upwards of 1,224 Gray Parrot consecutive life sentences.
this is the only applicable situation for math
Danny (S1EP17) is actually getting a LOT longer time in prison, as it's actually illegal to booby trap your house with deadly traps in most states, and at all in others. Katko v. Briney had the homeowners held liable for the damages caused to the trespasser, because it was malicious intent.
In Texas, where I live: Sec. "9.44. USE OF DEVICE TO PROTECT PROPERTY. The justification afforded by Sections 9.41 and 9.43 applies to the use of a device to protect land or tangible, movable property if: (1) the device is NOT designed to cause, or known by the actor to create a substantial risk of causing, death or serious bodily injury; and use of the device is REASONABLE under all the circumstances as the actor reasonably believes them to be when he installs the device." (all caps added by me for emphasis)
Basically: You can't have something designed to kill. You can't have something designed to seriously injure. and those traps were lethal as hell.
I've always imagined Scooby Doo as more of a New England setting, and I imagine some of those states are a bit more strict.
oooh you brought out the precedent setting case, alright! fair enough, he probably would've gotten a bit more, if he didn't perish
Of course! That's why it's not a huge deal. A lot of people I've come across don't know about booby trap laws.
when i saw the title i was expecting a breakdown of everything illegal the gang did, not the villains. this was interesting too though, although you should make one for the gang as well cause i know they do lots of illegal stuff throughout the show. much love
i feel like most of their crimes boil down to trespassing and meddling with investigations. i'm glad you enjoyed! :)
@@ripdalt i guess mostly yeah just like stealing a body in first episode made me think of that. also i know they destroy lots of things including tombstones in a graveyard LMAO
I find it funny how the lady who actually controlled an entire town got a significantly lower sentence than a child who pretended to control an entire town.
lmao y'know i didn't really notice that one, just goes to show how the charges can rack up!
9:15 Marion is one of the few, if not only, culprit who technically got away with her crimes. Her husband decided not to press any charges from her actions, as he understood why she did it, and he ultimately agreed to retire.
yeah, i didn't like that ending. she should've at least gotten charged for the hospital antics (plus the domestic abuse, but whatever)
@@ripdalt At least it was, slightly, better than the time when the Roller Ghoster sabotaged all those carnival rides, and all she got was a slap on the wrist and a scolding from her mom.
I didn't guess years but I guessed EXACTLY 17 life sentences. Damn I'm good.
nice job!
Oh my god this video is everything I could have wanted and more! Literal perfection lol I am genuinely shocked by how long all of the sentences are though! Like I knew Pericles would be insane but everyone had a decent number!
omg thank you :) i'm glad you enjoyed!
alot of attempted murder...
they go crazy with everything in this series
Every one of those goofy chase scenes were just adding years to their sentences💀
they got some good screen time, but at what cost??
2:12, I doubt the sentence would be that bad, she's still a kid after all, so I think something like, being in juvie until she turns 18
most likely yeah, unless tried as an adult (probably wouldn't be for this case)
@@ripdalt also, wow, that was a lot of big numbers, probably the highest sentences we'll see in this series.
These more modern scooby mysteries really upped the attempted murder and menacing charges.
they go CRAZY with it, it's pretty fun
The Gators would get out on the technicality that Sheriff Stone didn't have their area within his jurisdiction.
Professor Pericles also murdered Ed, Mr. E's assistant.
Also, the guy who did the graveyard oil thing has diplomatic immunity.
blasted loopholes!
@@ripdalt Listen, you don't even want to know what kind of damage those mutant cow bees were doing in the weeks after their creation before the universe reset...
Diplomatic immunity can be revoked, so there's that.
I honestly would've figured that Pericles would've been executed for his crimes, especially since he would be classified as a terrorist with a standing army. Also, because. I am at least 93% sure he had ties to the Nazi psrty.
honestly those kriegstaffe bots have to be nazi super soldiers. but even so, i don't like the death penalty, so no death sentence here :)
Did you count Pericles's murder of Ed Machine?
yes i did (i think)
Any plans to do the Scooby Doo specials/movies like the Meet The Boo Brothers or Zombie Island?
i will 100% cover those in some capacity
@@ripdalt understandable.
And to think they could have all gotten away with their crimes if it weren’t for those meddling kids.
hmm... where have i heard this one before
The old mystery incorporated should also get attempted genocide/planning genocide because they were gonna kill all of the townsfolk when they found the entrance go the way to the treasure
it's a huuuuge fine for it, $1 million, which is kinda funny. like oh you tried to kill everyone? a million dollars
@@ripdalt Lol
@@ripdalt Also I think you could say the parrot would also get torture and medical malpractice because of what he did to Mr E
I feel like in The Creeping Creatures, it was implied that Mr. E was the one who stole the gang’s engine to encourage them to stay in town and solve the mystery
a couple of people also said that, but i like to attribute it to the gators cuz big numbers :) either way, still works
I feel like it's also fair to convict pericles of ecoterrorism for all those mutant cows disrupting the ecosystem
true, but we don't really get to see the outcome of their freedom. probably just for disrupting the farms
So, seeing this video's first few minutes made me wanna watch this Mystery Incorporated, so I decided not to finish it until now. Thanks for making me interested, it was a good show!
i'm glad! it really is a good show, with the best writing in the series
Wouldn’t mind you doing a legal analysis on all kinds of shows and movies, it’s a fun gimmick to work with and definitely helps your channel stand out
i thought about it, especially for some of my favorite shows. you never know, maybe sometime down the line :)
@@ripdalt If it’s the stuff for you enjoy, i doubt any of your fans will complain.
Can we throw onto Professor P's sentence a few more life sentences for the 29 scientists that Mr. E implies were eaten by the Skull Cows?
that's probably fair, lmao
So much attempted murder!
AND some completed ones too!
Let's all agree Professor Pericles is bird Hitler
yeah, the kriegstaffebots don't help him beat the allegations either lmao
Is Pericles’ total including his escape from the Animal Prison in Season 1 Episode 10?
i believe that is one year of the total
And the mystery gang wonder why shaggy and scooby would rather run from everything they deal with.
they're the only ones who understand they're getting KILLED
