- What a great start to this GBRF 2018 "Out of the Ordinary" four day tour.
Filmed at four locations, including in the video are 73961 & 73963.

Gosh I don't think I've ever seen such a fuss made of over any AC loco before, never mind an 87!....literally swarms of people crowding round at Paddington!

There are some locomotives with a noise so iconic you know instantly what is there. A/C Electrics, Deltics, Class 37's to name a few. Great video.

Made my century watching this, something I never thought I'd see years ago as a young spotter, absolutely amazing to see an 87 in Pad!!!!
It was so good to see this 87 in Padd as you say, but give me back the times when the station was full of class 31 47 50 and 52.
antman09ful1 Yes definitely better times back then.
For those (including myself) old enough to remember the British Rail blue era of the 1970s and 80s the railways now are in some ways unrecognisable. 30 or 40 years ago each region seemed to be quite distinctive and if someone had told me back then that there would be class 87s in Paddington and regular Deltic mainline runs I probably would have thought they were mad. In a funny kind of way I miss the grit and grime of the BR era which I think was a better time to be a rail enthusiast.
How true, also with a few exceptions like the five german rail busses for example, all rolling stock was British built. WTF happened?
They were such great days but I must say at the time I didn't appreciate what we enthusiasts had, I wish we still had loads of locos and BR. Thank you for your interest in my video. Regards Mike.
I must say that I preferred the British built locos and rolling stock of the BR era. It just seemed to be more solidly built and had real character too. I also think that the old mk1s and 2s were in many ways more comfortable than todays stock.
Them Mk 1s and 2s and even 3s are the royal train compared to today plastic rubbish.
Thanks for sharing. Totally insane watching for someone on the other side of the World, that used to go as a kid to London in the late 1970s to see Westerns at Padd, Deltics/40s at KX, 45/1 at St.Pancras ,81-7 at Euston, 31/0 & 37 at Liverpool St. All in BR corporate blue!

Great video, I missed that great event.... The method of driving through the GWML neutral sections must have been interesting. IIRC on the GW each neutral approach has standard lineside warning signs but on the track uses a balise-based system designed for the 800s instead of traditional APC magnets to open then re-close the breakers.

Superb Mike, very well covered little piece of history there with the first AC loco working on the GWML - who could have foreseen that a few years ago! Love the roar of those old AC's, and hopefully 87002 and sister 86's will find some use when the Mk5's go into service as they don't have the necessary Dellner couplers for them.
Does the sleeper stock have different couplings from the TPX stock then? Class 47s can couple to that.

The Class 87 whine reminds me of the war siren I've heard in Plymouth around 14/15 years ago - crumbs I hope no-one living nearby thought that was this sort of alarm that sounded 😉!

A 25kv AC loco has visited Paddington in the past, I'm referring to the GWR designed gas turbine loco 18100 subsequently converted to 25kv AC, although it wasn't 25kv AC at the time, this probably doesn't count !

They didn't pick the best time for a four day tour, with Severe Weather and national Rail Enquiries shrieking at you "DO NOT TRAVEL!!!"
Well yes, but when it is organised you hope the weather will be OK, I got wet all day yesterday filming the 37s to Penzance so I was well p__sed off.
We had more sunshine than bad weather throughout the tour , so I don’t really know what you’re on about? Even sunshine in the West Highland leg , you can’t get wet inside the coaches unless you spill your drink 😜
Well, there was Storm, whatever it was called, Stormy Daniels or am I getting confused, the wires down on the East Coast and big red triangles all over National Rail Enquiries shouting "DO NOT TRAVEL!!".
@@AndreiTupolev And I suppose you could have predicted that would happen if you organised the tour then. cancelling on the day is not an option unless you are prepared for hefty bills. which would wipe out the profit and even with a re run would make a loss

Makes a change from those appalling IEPs. Notice the ends of the platforms at Didcot Parkway all fenced off for the Buddleia to grow behind. I am surprised Network Rail co operated with running this tour as if they had there way no railtours would run at all.

Really? Regular steam over Shap, for example, regular steam west of Bristol, either of which was almost unheard of under BR? Deltics, Westerns (when they're working) and Class 40s on the main line?
That is very true. The thing that really depresses me is seeing the infrastructure going to wreck and ruin with buddleia everywhere. No one seems to care anymore.
Well it has to be said that if it wasn't for the Network Rail charter train planners at MK, then there would be no tours!
NR work very hard to ensure that they continue to run. Its rising traffic levels which make them difficult to run.
Hopefully plenty of life left in 87002 for years to come.....now can we have some enthusiast charters ???

Cracking vid bud. Can you or do you remember the times on this. I.E. what time you through reading. Arrival into pad. Did you go down fast lines or relief lines. Sorry for all questions. Was thinking of putting this into a scenario for Railworks. Lol.

Paddington about 20.30 ish
When down the slow to Reading then fast I believe.
@@antman09ful1 thank you. I was Gunna try and turn it into a train SIM scenario. There is a new route out called western mainline electrification and it's overhead from tilehurst to Paddington. So I was Gunna recreate this class 87 job. You have been helpful. And if you do trainsim 2020. Then I will let you no and credit you with timings. Many thanks bud. Take care.

At the moment its Didcot for the EMU service.

Yes its been on loan for a long time.
the will need it for the sleeper because it has the denler coupling and the mk 5 are fitted with the denler
