1. He's supposed to look terrifying, not cute and cuddly.
2. He wasn't turned into this by himself, but by a witch, so I don't see how it's "falling in love with Satan".
If terrifying was what they were going for they failed. He looks like a hairy dude with horns, not really terrifying in the slightest.

yep so does it change the fact that in a society with a christian culture characters with horns like this represent the devils..? The goat is a representation of the devil in christian culture ,the same way as the snake is..it is just a fact;we would not be debating about this thing if it wasn't true.People see a representation of the devil when they look at this thing and rightfully so because that what it is.It's great that you are able to broaden your mind about it and see deeper but in our culture this physical representation is a symbol of the devil.Now i am not saying the beast in this movie is the devil -I hope he is not-and I don't think it is- but he surely has one of his many physical representations in our culture.
The Gaston picture when he's singing reminds me of every Renaissance paintings ever that involve tons of peoples with different expressions in their faces.
Emma Watson looks so miserable, in every single photo. My goodness, that gown is just awful. It looks like those prom dress that can be ordered from China. The material appears to be cheap, and the design is downright tacky. How difficult was it to create an understated and elegant, yet "period appropriate", gown for Belle?
Luke Evans looks amazing as Gaston. I bet everyone will be singing in the theater, during the "Gaston" number.

Emma Watson was a mistake by Disney. She is so properly English and miserable. Yes Emma would have been a great choice for an academic character but Belle isn't just that. Belle is a wild and restless character who wants to see and walk various parts of the world. The reason she reads isn't because she wants to acquire some esoteric knowledge but to escape the little town she grew up in. And please pardon my superficiality but Emma always looks so stern and proper like a typical Victorian English lady. Her facial features do not convey empathy and understanding that are the two defining characteristics of Belle. Of course it doesn't help that she looks so miserable in every picture. The film needed someone who looks more French and with a happier disposition.
I absolutely love Emma Watson, but I'm just not really a fan of her being cast as Belle.

You know some of these issues in character s not acting like themselves could be solved by at least starting with a personality base. Them seeing how it goes.

He doesn't look like Satan to me and I'm a Christian; those who aren't Christians normally think of the Devil as a red dude with horns and a tail. But as a Christian we picture him as a fallen angel as described in the Bible. I don't think they will have to worry about him looking like Satan and that discouraging movie goers.

As for the image the reason why people describe the devil as a red dude with horn or a a goat is the same reason why they described him as a dragon or a serpent it is figurative.Everyone knows the devil is not a serpent ..it is just that in literature ,cultures those animals or physical characteristics are the best suited to describe the devil .

The beast reminds me of a Satyr from Greek mythology and the lion from The Wizard of Oz.
The Cowardly Lion meets Mr. Tumnus... Yeah, he looks way too nice. Although, to be fair, we've only seen him in a good mood.
Is it simply America's overt Christian-inclination that some people instantly picture Satan? Satyr was the first thing I thought of, and I still don't see Satan.
Here's a good rule of thumb: if you get the urge to scratch it behind the ear, it's probably not Satan.

The set design is gorgeous. The set design is on point. But the costume choices and character designs..,, oh dear hot mess. Gaston is a hunter! The ultimate in masculinity and direct stark contrast to the beast and plays on the whole hunter/beast theme. Luke Evans looks good but his design is.... tragic. And belle's village outfit. The collar (if that is even what it's called) is so disjointed to the rest of the outfit and very distracting. I don't even wanna get into the beast and the servants they are just awful. But the set design is GORGEOUS and I am very impressed with every Set piece presented thus far

Belles gown is just so... plain. I was expecting something more. A friend of mine did work experience on this movie in the costume department a year or two ago and apparently Emma had real issues with the dress and it kept being changed. She was a pain to work with, so I'm told.

That doesn't mean she can't have a well designed dress. And besides, the dress isn't actually Belle's if I remember. They could have done so much more in terms of period accuracy and volume. Look at any 18th century dress, they are miraculously detailed with embroidery, embellishments and lace with lavish and expensive fabrics. In the picture shown the background is so beautifully detailed and rich and the dress is just so offensively plain and lackluster.

I can see why some people would think the Beast's new look would look similar to the Devil. But let's remember; Glen Keane, the animator on the original animated film, being a Christian himself, drew the Beast as a visual allegory of what happens to you on the inside when you make the kind of mistakes the prince did. But Belle's love for him is a representation of Christ's love and mercy which factors into the transformation at the end. Keane has actually talked about using the Bible scripture, "Any man who is in Christ is a new creature", as an inspiration for when he turns into the prince. So I don't know if a Devil-look is what they intended. I don't think it was.

The window cleaning reminds me of the "Once Upon a Time" Belle storyline where Belle was there to clean Rumplestiltskin's castle. I'm still wondering if the yellow dress is "the" dress or if that is just being used for teaser photos and they don't want to reveal the dress yet. The blue dress is more important to me than the ball gown since that's her main outfit, so I'm not mad at the yellow gown. It just looks modern, especially at the top. They didn't need to do a form fitting corset, but the sleeves could be more like the animated picture, and gloves could have been added to keep it more a period piece. I'm very happy the Beast isn't relying on CGI. I think the design for the Beast in the musical is closer to the animated picture though. But, ironically, I think if either is more "devil" looking, it's the musical one because the horns point forward. But the teeth should have been there like in the musical and the animated film. It looks more like they tried to do a more human-looking Beast. Almost like they crossed the Disney film's Beast with the Beast that Ron Perlman portrayed in the late 80s/early 90s TV show. The Beast is one of my favorite Disney characters, so it's a bit disappointing. I hope the "early" Beast in the film looks a bit more wild animal (uncombed, torn clothes, etc) to make him more frightening. And, while I know they don't want to do things from the musical, I still want to see a nod to my favorite number from the stage production, "Gaston." I want that choreographed beer stein dance sequence. If you've seen the musical, you'll know what I mean, and it's awesome.

I agree, but especially about Emma. When I first saw the pictures yesterday, I wasn't all too thrilled with her presence in two or three of them, just because she didn't seem to embody her character much, looking like she would've forgotten to act her part when the shots were taken. Well I'll wait for the film and she see will she manage to turn my head around with her performance, as even she no doubt is a great actress, from the very beginning she hasn't quite striken as Belle to me...But it's done, and I accept it.
But I so hope that the yellow gown that is so iconic will not look so prom dress like in the finished product....

These photos really cement that I don't like Emma Watson as Belle. She always seems so angry. It worked ok for Hermione since she was always written as kind of stuck up and humorless but Belle is supposed to be warm and loving, the kind of person who would see the best qualities in Beast. Emma feels cold. I hope she proves me wrong.

I think that they are playing on Emma's looks to sell the character of belle (not a bad move, since there is no denying that she look so, very, similar to the cartoon version..) As for the way she looks from a 'princess perspective', I think she pulls it off well, even though it's not glamorous... She looks more approachable and easier to understand.. A great way to portray a potential (possibly, already) role model. I like it. I will agree that the stand alone picture of her is a little dull, but I do still like it. Also, after seeing the second picture of the beast, I'm much happier with the look. Everything else is exquisite. This looks amazing overall.
Hey grace, a friend of mine is working on the fx of the movie and I believe they are struggling with belle's performance... Fingers crossed they edit and cut it well enough for it not to affect the movie. Disney knows how do cut and paste, the end product should be good.

Kemmy, from what I been told it's her acting as Belle, it seems it's not very believable. Now with all the weird faces on the pics, it could be perfectly true. I didn't really go into it any deeper, therefore I don't know about her singing.
Egoitz but Emma has been praised by many people who've already seen the movie, like Alan Menken (composer) and Page O'Hara (who voiced Belle in the original animated) who said she was perfect!

I liked the animated ballroom where the windows were HUGE and they danced while the background was the sky with the stars. This looks like a living room of an LA home.

I think that the photos alone play to the strengths of the set, whereas the actors and their costumes are best seen in motion. I'm not entirely sold on these costumes, but on the other hand, we haven't yet seen them as they're meant to be seen. I think this is just too static to form a judgment. I will agree with Grace in that it's an absolutely beautiful castle. I also think that the window picture is absolutely breathtaking, and maybe a little reminiscent of Dr Strange.

The first picture of Belle and the beast (to me) looks like SHE was teaching him and he was in awe of what he's reading and her expression is one of a stern teacher trying to get through to a stubborn child. I think Emma will play this role similar to her role in Harry Potter of the young in body but mature in mind, icy emotional wall, diamond in the rough, no nonsense tomboyish Heroine. Who's feminine side blossoms throughout the film. Just a guess .
P.S. you would make a wonderful Belle! For what it's worth.

With Lumiere, what I thought they were gonna do was have his face appear in the flame of the center candle, similar to The Ghost of Christmas Past in Disney's "Christmas Carol" with Jim Carrey. However, I'm not disappointed that they made him look more like a person for this adaptation. With the concept art that went online earlier this year, I couldn't make out where his face was supposed to be.
So older religious people might not see it. Might be a hit, but I doubt younger people care about the devil similarities, which didn't even cross my mind.
Hell the slight similarity to the Devil might be in purpose. So the contrast with Belle and the Beast is more noticeable and people can understand how difficult it would be to love something that reminds you of evil. But it's not appearances that count, it's what's inside!
I agree about the ball gown. It looks like a cheap prom dress. I'm not really impressed by Emma in any of the pictures, but hopefully her performance will be good. I actually don't mind the Beast's design. It looks fine to me.
I seriously think they simplified the ballgown down for marketing purposes so that it would be easier to replicate for the prom and casual costume crowd, which honestly is a crap reason to do anything. But hey, that's Hollywood for you. Any way to make an extra buck.
All of these look like terribly timed screen captures. Like the actors weren't ready for the picture. Also, the tea pot looks SOOOOO out of scale compared to everything else. As much as I love Emma Watson, I am still really skeptical about this movie.
Well...ive always seen Belle as a no nonsense kinda gal...i can imagine her saying "whoa Beast what the hell?!...you can live in this place when it looks like this and if you expect me to stay here then I'm gonna clean it" Hard work pays off
Jesus Christ you dig so deep into one picture, you don't know what is going on in the scene, what happened before the scene. So you can't judge a performance based on a picture.
I mean I'm religious and trust me I thought the horns did look a little devil like but it's not going to keep me or any people that I am friends with who are religious and also excited about this movie from seeing it! I mean he isn't the actual devil so it shouldn't bother people that much I would think. That is my main problem with him though and I don't really understand why they would go with that design, but I'm sure when we see the movie it will be fine.

It's the horns, Grace. They stand out much more than in the animated film. I had the same thought and Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie.
the horns just look weird.. like they couldn't figure out how to do the facial features from the animated film so they opted to put large horns on his head. aside from that i liked the photos. the only other thing that somewhat bugged me is the size of Mrs Potts, she's so tiny compared to everybody else.. seems odd.

They REALLY shouldn't have made the horns backwards. Don't get the decision behind that. They should've just played it safe and gone with the same horns from the original.
I still would have liked Jean Dujardin as Lumiere. As for Luke Evans, I'm completely biased as I have had a crush on him since forever, and he can do no wrong in my eyes (though I haven't seen "Girl on the train" yet).
Maybe the scene when she cleans the window, is maybe when she arrives the beast makes her clean because he believes that's the only thing women can do. So then she proves to him that she can teach him about books and literature.
I don't think I've ever agreed so much with Grace in anything haha
