Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on UA-cam!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

Fascinating
Great explore. Thank you Gly and Laura.🙂
The wood box at 9:43 looks like is says WERK going by the font style. Unforts there doesn't seem to be much info on google about that company or images of boxes with that name in such large lettering so it might be a very rare find at least in North America. I found a German company called Werk Tanne that was known for manufacturing explosives so this might be what that says. Found a wikipedia page with some info "The plant of Tanne, Tarnname Tanne, is a former explosives factory on the eastern outskirts of Clausthal-Zellerfeld on the Middle Pfauenteich. It existed from 1935 to 1944 and was the third largest explosive and ammunition company in the German Reich during the time of National Socialism. The plant served mainly for the production of TNT, in later years , mines and grenades were also filled." - translated from German.
Thank you for researching this and sharing with us!
Definitely one of the best videos yet mates. Loved the artifacts and knowing the process of black powder mining, it was awesome to see a rare glimps of it in the U.S. cant wait for the next one! Stay safe mates.
Gly's Bridge - Shall ye Pass?
Joking; put in your bid for the candle with only a thumbs up!
nice find guys
@20:13, Dramatic Music!
Gly, could you tell what these mines were hauling out? When you look at the walls you have no way of knowing what they were mining. Just another exciting factor to know what was found in the mines.
Was a silver mine and plenty is to be had.
Does the upcoming "Gly's Shorts" Video have the Infamous "Tooting" Intro?
Good Morning Gly and Laura, thanks for another Awesome share/explore, cool artifacts. Take care and stay safe. ⛏⚒⛏ Howdy all, from the Gold Hill mining district of southwestern Oregon, best wishes.
Love the intro. Loved your explanation to get more footage-coverage of the mine. Cool dramatic music. Cool, more artifacts. Is that where that saying comes from, a pinch shall grow an inch, lol. Cool dates, thanks for the photos of it. That is the bridge of doom, take us to it. Gly, you just had to, make us way, you're so funny that way.
Glad to see you both back exploring again. Awesome awesome artifacts and mine site ! Hope you both are doing well. Can’t wait for Wednesday adventures again. Hope old Bob is fixed . As always be safe out there ! See you Wednesday👍🏼🫂🙂
First class video Gly- Laura 😊 please keep the great videos coming friends. From Scotland 😊🎉🎉
Hey Scotland, Y'all are on my bucket list!! I want to see some of the Scotch distilleries and your beautiful country, peace friends from Southern California...
To work by candle light would be like working by moon light. I don’t know how they did so much work in that darkness Thanks Gly and Laura for posting these videos.
They did have reflectors and lenses that concentrated the light. It wasn't THAT bad, but it still wasn't good.
Omg an original candle!!! ❤❤❤ that was so freaking cool. AND it had the soot staining left on the wall!!!
Why didn't he grab that candle?
Thanks for a rerun and to refresh my memory on such great artifacts. I’ve been with u from the very gecko. So your excitement is just as enthusiastic as then . Laura has come along way. God bless for that. 😊
If you want to see rope exploration in a mine, you're watching the wrong channel. Frank does it the best!
His camera work is horrendous in comparison. I don't even watch him at all.
I like Frank and Gly both - but I prefer Gly's personality, camera work, and I find the mines are more interesting to me on Gly's channel.
The only real sigma on youtube blesses us with another video! Rock on man!
So many artifacts and history in this one! And that old too!
This exploration was outstanding... good job! 🙂
3 of the dates are patent dates, they may all in be patent dates. 5/24/1881 US-0241833 (if that is the full number) was for a retort for reducing ore. I did not do a complete search so there might be a better match in the 14 page list of patents issued on 5/24/1881
Wow! those artifacts/buckets are an amazing find. Aren't they also called a "Kibble"? Regardless, what a museum of a mine. Thank you for taking us with you on your exploration.
Great trip, thanks and I hope it stays the way it is. It must be really hard to not want to take a little souvenir, that candle was the best, you could still see the black above it from the flame, at least thats what I think I saw...Loved this one thanks guys...
Yes I saw that too (soot) and it made me even more excited.
Well I think we need to refer Gly in these last 2 videos as Gly Giddiness. Haha, nice to see Gly so happy and giggling. Great videos.
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE SHORT ON WED. I'VE BEEN PRAYING FOR REHYDRATION OF THE GREAT BASIN! YAY! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE VIDEO!!! I LOVE IT GLY!
60
I think the last date was 1881 because it goes from May 24th to June 14th. 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the Saturday explore of that great old mine and all the rope work it took to get down there.
I wil keep asking GLY
will we ever see the Schnozzolator 5000 again
No
I missed your Wednesday episode Gly! I was actually bummed😢!
Pretty sure that the last five minutes of this video, were from an older video I have already seen. I think there may have been a mistake in the editing process. I remember Gly showing Laura that bridge in another outro, and talking about the snowfields in Nevada, as well as showing those same boards with those same dates - they are from a different mine than was explored in this video, right?
Great artifacts Gly and Laura. Hope you go back and check the next level.
Grab some artifacts and auction them off.
Hey Gly, I hate to be pedantic, but...
Were = is the singular or plural past tense I think you're looking for in the video title.
We're = is the contraction of "WE ARE"
Otherwise, this video is AMAZING!
Also as we are correcting Gly: Dragged in, not drug in. 😄
Black goo may have been some sort of grease. Mine cart wheels must need grease of some sort.
Danke fur das Hochladen sehr interessant
Not sure how i missed last week's video but i guess I'm watching part 2 first.
At least they use bickford fuse back in the day, black powder have nice smell than those dynamite doing headaches it should smell way different in the mine in the day
thanks!!!!!!
Hey who threw that.........
I am Probably going to anger some People, and I've bit My tongue for years about this, but not only am I Fan of Gly, but I also care about his personal well being. And now with Laura part of the permanent picture, there is now Two people that are affected by this. Straight to the point- Gly needs to focus on his Health, and loose some weight. With the Dangers he's already in, and going into tight places, as well, as We all have seen how easily He becomes winded and looses his breath. Again, this is not a personal attack or done out of Malice. This is a concern for two people I care about, am a Fan of, and a Channel I love. I want to be able to enjoy this Channel for years and years to come. Take care Everyone, and Gly & Laura stay Safe!
I will go ahead and second this. It's a very tough call to make to be able to call someone out so to speak about something as sensitive as their body. GLY may have health issues he doesn't discuss with us that affect his body type differently than everyone else. While I'm not saying they don't know how to cook being able to cook quality food while on the road editing traveling crawling through pits stressing about mechanical things. I would say there's a larger percentage of us who can't do the things that he does skinny or not. Personally I am a cave explorer here locally in Tennessee. But I smoke cigarettes I know the dangerous I know I need to quit and it does affect me in the pits. Another thing to keep in mind is in some of these places the elevation is very high sometimes above 7000 feet in elevation so the air is much thinner. Even some of the most seasoned Ashley's have difficulty and higher elevation.
😂😂 at 16 minutes 55 seconds I believe that was poop😅
SM would stand for Silver mine perhaps
It’s *lose.. and no one asked you so mind your own fat business. You’re typing your comments from your couch while they’re OUT making videos and being physically active. Just appreciate what they do for your enjoyment and butt out of other people’s business.
I agree but Gly and I have the same problem and that means Laura is not going to able to pull Gly out of a hole if he falls hahaha 😝
Yeah, remember the turtle
Excellent video
Interesting vein structure, a big hunk of that would look good in my rock display case! Wasn't that one of the mines they were getting gemstones out of, more than metals? I can't put my finger on the memory, but for some reason the other sorta shiny rocks come to mind. Might be hallucinating, never can tell. Keep up the good work, guys!
🧨⛏🧨⛏🇬🇧👍
😀
Love catching up with the old videos, great interesting mine thanks guys ❤
You break it! You buy it!😂
How many feet of rock were the miners expected to remove in a shift ? 😮
11
Thank you for the awesome mine. GOD bless you both
😎🤙🏻🖖🏻🖖🏻
Your background music made for a feeling of excitment. I love how you "build" around your explores, but yes, we are looking at something pretty dramatic. Your & Laura's discoverys are somethings that without your "explore", we, the public, would never get to see. Thanks for another one.
couldn,t read the mine data to much glair for my old eyes to bright what a great great video .Preston
Isn't it called brazing instead of soldering when pieces of metal are joined by melting another metal? But wow, what an incredibly complex mine!
The first vertical I explored was at CandelarIa, NV, back in 1970, called the Northern Belle. It had the same kind of plug in the shaft, some cross timbers and rock to jam it and deny access. But over the years, people had dug out a shimmy hole, and I was able to squeeze through. Being alone, I was scared to go down more than a few levels, but hey, at 16 I was young and foolish, so it was lucky the ladders were safe, and the manway was divided into levels every 25 feet or so...
The thing that strikes me about contemporary underground exploration is not only how popular it's become, but how video recording and portable lighting has advanced - when I started you had a two D cell alkaline battery flashlight or maybe a 6 volt - all very heavy if you carried extra lights, which as a teenager I didn't do as much as I should have...
But it's amazing to see these old tunnels illuminated so well! We take it for granted today, but I even carried a carbide lamp, and imagining that being their workspace illumination is incredible! Never mind using candles....
It's interesting that calcium carbide and miner's lamps are still available today, but luckily the mining industry has adopted LED lamps and the like, though these days work areas are floodlit with standard industrial lighting.
Bringing back memories....thank you kindly for the video....cheers.
frank didnt the goverment devalue silver in the 1890s
The goopy stuff could have been them soaking wood in mineral oil and burning it??
Can say it enough, great times watching you and Laura share your adventures with us mine nerds. Keep safe and healthy.
I doubt that was a tea pot or a coffee pot.It was probably for oil of some type
You know Sharon collects old tea kettles right?
"SM" Standards for*Sado-Masochism!*
@32:26, Gly weight shames himself!
Am I nuts or does he refer to a different mine as tender ridge? He's in thunder ridge.
Gly, love the episode. Are there any video links or site's to actual footage of deep rock mining ⛏️?
Gly that was a tight shimmy into that stope...LOL Glad you and Laura are partners as the vibe is so much fun and exciting in my opinion. You both share a passion to explore those old abandoned mines. Keep on discovering .
