Man taking the 1xp and 2 gold in Mountain pass is the weakest choice, the best Choice hands down is the Fight option which you can get an item, gold and xp. And the income is the second best choice. Unless you there is a special store, or you really need a item, if Mountain Pass is available you should always pick it and a the fight option its just too good and can get you an early advantage for the future. Who doesn't love getting an item, plus serious xp and some gold on top of it. You should never really pick the 1 xp and 2 gold option its the weakest choice.
On day 2-3 before lvl up it's fairly likely you run into a fight you just lose. He didn't even have full board size yet, I'd say hard day 3 and all day 4 fights are unlikely wins.
Nah the 1 xp and 2 gold to guarantee a level up is often better than risking not getting a fight. Especially early, you can just get an item or xp with no gold. In the late game, yes it's always best to choose fight
