- Paradox Interactive has made a LOT of games, and i'm ranking ALL of them in a TIER LIST.. a DEFINITIVE tier list! let me know what you disagree with.. y'all know this is just my opinion right? 😉
from Crusader Kings 3 to Hearts of Iron 4 to Victoria 3 to Europa Universalis 4 recently, all the way back to the original Crusader Kings 1 and games like Imperator Rome and March of the Eagles, it's only fair to analyze all of these games to figure out EXACTLY where they belong on this list.
i will say that most paradox games are honestly really really good compared to average games, especially for a company at their size at this point. think of this mostly just relative to each other on this list.. if that makes it sting a little less.. lol...
also special shoutout to Laith from TheSocialStreamers for having done this same exact thing like a couple years ago while I had this idea independently thinking i'm like a genius or something instead of having room temperature IQ 😭

HOI4 is a 7/10 game but a 25/10 modding engine
Some Mods for HOI4 feel like a whole different, complex game and I absolutely love it

Victoria 2 being in C tier hurts my soul rather a lot, and I think that vic3 still needs a patch or two before it ought to be that high, but besides that I think this is about where I'd rank things.
This, idk even though it has all the usual paradox quirks and issues, I feel like Victoria 2 stands out as the most immersive of them all. I think its just got the right level of charm and character too that's missing in lot of the others.
Vic3 in its current state just doesn't have anything to really justify playing it over Vic2. I doubt Vic3 could ever get to that point, because the core of the game just doesn't have anything going for it and I don't see the devs adding back in features that they intentionally gutted from the new game.
I know I felt the same in regards to HoI4 and HoI3 for the first few years after HoI4's release, but then came to prefer the newer game. But I also have gotten into the habit of playing older versions of the HoI4 instead of the newest patches, since the game has become a bloated mess of mechanics that just don't work as intended.
I guess it's cool that you can design you own equipment, but the AI is so comically bad at it, that the game becomes trivially easy if you do put any thought into your own designs. And the recently added arms market is basically pointless as well with how the AI never puts anything halfway decent on the market. HoI4 used to be better and I think that trend is already set for Paradox games in general.
@@villevalste1888 I think there are merits to vic3 over vic2 in its current state. I do still think that vic2 is an overall better game, but with every passing update that gap narrows for me.
I think vic3 definitely handles internal politics better, though I'd still like a return of consciousness admittedly. Interest groups and agitators are both great inclusions they've expanded on a decent amount, and I think they generally do a better job than Vic2's system.
I think the economy has gone from being squarely better in vic2 to a mix of which game is better in which way. Vic3 definitely represents its capitalists better on most laws, with them being much more powerful and influential, and much more sensible about their investments. Laissez Faire still needs a lot of work, and other elements of the economy are still pretty bad, but overall I do think it works about as well as Vic2's.
Vic3's main issues for me are its war and peace systems, particularly the peace system, its AI, and its colonisation. Over time we'll get updates that address the latter two, and possibly even some of the former if we're lucky.
To speak to HOI4's feature bloat, I fully agree in singleplayer, but in MP I don't think the game's ever been in a better state. Personally I find MIOs a bit annoying in MP, but besides that all of the additions they've made have only improved the MP experience. The designers make for really interesting rock paper scissors dynamics for tank and naval warfare, the air meta is in a good place, focuses for important countries that aren't Japan are in a good place, etc. I play a little hoi4 singleplayer, and I can see how a lot of the newer features could bring the game down for someone in that context, but at this point HOI4 is mostly a multiplayer game for me, and a lot of its newer issues are fixed when viewed through that lens.
To speak to the future of PDX titles, read the EU5 dev diaries. With Vic3's, and I know this because I followed them religiously, you could tell something was wrong fairly early on. I clocked on around dev diary 7 or 8 that things felt off. EU5's have been perfect. The game seems like it's set to launch with flavour on a global scale, a better representation of feudalism than CK2 or CK3, a better pop system than vic2 or vic3, a better economy than either game, etc. It seems like it's set to take the best parts of every PDX game and mesh them all together. All the things I wanted out of EU5 for years that I thought would never happen because of the shift the company's taken with CK3 and Vic3 are happening. It's incredible. It feels like Johan wants to release his magnum opus and then retire. Seriously, go and read the EU5 dev diaries, they will restore your faith in PDX if anything can.
Based ck2 in S tier. Could not agree more. The "it is still mystical to play even after thousands of hours" is exactly right, that is something that I dont quite get from ck3 (yet, lets see where it goes with DLC).
Still haven't bought CK3 since I own CK2 with all the DLCs and I would just objectively be downgrading since CK3 is going to continue to pump out DLC which I'm going to have to spend loads of money on to get back to the same level
@@orionknight4803 Ck3 is nice for people who have never played ck2 imo, but for me it is too clean. Too streamlined. Sure some quality of life changes are great (converting provinces being a progress bar and not chance based comes to mind) I also really like the religion and culture systems their introduced (flawed they might be but a solid basis).
However all that comes crashing down for me when I declare war or need to kick out some annoying vikings: war is just not fun. Aside from attrition everything regarding warfare in ck3 is just really underwhelming, or downright bad. The character roleplay is also a lot less interesting imo. Sure traits could get a bit out of hand in ck2, but ck3 is too extreme in the other direction: your character has 3 traits and that is it and they can never change? Idk that doesnt feel right. Stress, while a fun idea is just bar that you need to manage by throwing money at feasts and hunts, not quite what it could have been either.
@@noneofyourbusiness3288 Whilst I agree that traits are a bit underwhelming, there is actually a way to change traits, if somehow, your stress goes above 200, your character has a mental breakdown which makes him lose a trait and gain another.
@@noneofyourbusiness3288 I think I put about 100 hours into CK2, I came in around the end of the dev cycle, and while I love CK2, personally CK3 just feels like a different game all together. CK2 feels like old PDX, focus on grand strategy with light RPG on the side, where as 3 feels like, and often I play it as, an RPG first, grand strat second. I much prefer the focus on the player with the tours and tournies pack and the throneroom and stuff. I'm excited to see where it goes and don't fault people for waiting for more content. Personally I'm eagerly awaiting some occult shenanigans.
But it is for sure for new CK players. My wife gave CK2 a go once and hated it, said it was way to cluttered, and confusing. She's currently sitting at 1400 hours and going for all the achievements in CK3.
@@prototype102010 Interestingly enough I have the exact opposite experience with ck2 and ck3. I feel like ck2 is much more of an RPG than 3 is. In ck3 it was very straight-forward: upgrade MAA and start map-painting, while ck2 was a lot more chaotic and I felt the "mythos" of each ruler a lot more. In ck3 I could not care less about my ruler, as long as their stewardship is high enough.

I'd put Vicky2 above Vicky3.
Vicky3 gives you an instant command economy, which is fun, but Vicky2's system is more realistic and requires less micromanaging. Of course, if you made Vicky3's system like Vicky2's, you would be left with an utterly empty experience devoid of anything of note because Vicky3 has almost nothing besides the economy micro.

Stellaris genuinely deserves to be d tier, fails on almost every level to be enjoyable or understand what makes paradox games work. I think it's overrated

You can't put Gal Civ 2 higher than Stellaris.
I'd agree that Stellaris is not the best vanilla experience. But you mod that game up and, at least to me, it is hands down one of the best experiences in gaming.

I am yet to find a single bug in Victoria 2. Victoria 3 is just a flashy and soulless showpiece (and arguably the worst map someone could think of). Vicky 2 is interesting only if you play a major nation - which is... the point... of the Victorian Era of superpowers fighting for global hegemony, Britain at the helm.
I personally feel like eu4 is the best especially with modding because extended timelines is infinite hours of gameplay
Victoria 3 is so bad it can barely hold 5k to 7k players daily while older Paradox Games like CK3,EU4 etc go for 15k or more Players daily is a shamefull display for the newest addition to the roaster of Paradox games

Where is the original Victoria? 'Cause that's a solid S tier. It's buggy, it's janky, it's railroaded, but once you embrace the insanity it is so much fun and has alot of historical flavor

I’m here to throw full-hearted support behind Vic3 above Vic2, Vic3 obviously has its issues and is still very barebones, but I’ve never played a LESS a accessible game than Vic2, Paradox or otherwise. Vic2 is carried so hard by the modding community providing flavor on top of a system that is wayyy jankier than Vic3 (inscrutable international markets, doomstack militaries relying on exploiting AI logic, domestic politics to get law changes feels like pulling teeth, SoI maintenance feel soooo tedious), though there’s a few cool things that Vic2 still has on Vic3 (national values, tech schools). Vic3’s bones FEEL better (e.g. if my economy hits the shitter, I can found out why MOST of the time, and if I wanted a doomstack “move pieces on a chessboard” military game I’d go to EU4, which executes it a lot better IMO) even if there’s no meat on them right now, but once Vic3 reaches the point where Vic2 is currently, should be no contest.
I know I’m a bit late on this reply however I do disagree with you on some points here imo. I strongly agree that Victoria 2 is very daunting and pretty inaccessible to learn due to the age and kinda reclusive playerbase and it’s many times pushed people away (I was one for such a long time). I do also agree with you that most of the mods made are to add flavor lacking in base, however I disagree that the system is jankier. The economy is extremely complex so much so that people still don’t truly know how it works. That’s not due to jank it’s just due to the ai markets. Everything is based on resources and resource production that follows a supply chain. Also your doomstack point doesn’t really reflect how the armies are structured by ai or even in meta players. The stacks are incentivized to be built in units of 30 as that number is the fastest way to siege down a province, anything more wastes supplies and does not increase siege speed. I do think though that the war system in Victoria 3 is one of the worst paradox has ever made, but that could be because they wanted Victoria 3 to be an economic simulation. I do think though that at that point it’s not really a sequel to Victoria 2 anymore because Victoria 2 wanted to simulate every aspect of that century including the countless wars fought during that time. Also yes base game domestic policies do suck there’s no way around it. I think mainly what it comes down to is that these are two very different games, and I don’t think it should’ve been marketed as a sequel to Victoria 2. They’re just so fundamentally different that comparing them doesn’t feel like comparing say hoi3 and hoi4 but more like comparing imperator Rome to Rome total war. Each has its audience. Sorry this was very long TLDR: you made some points and I made some counterpoints.

CK and EU Series: Fair Assesment
Imperator Rome: Did a number of cool things, but there's a reason it's basicly dead. More like D-C
HoI Series: Personaly I also like HoI VI the most and prefer III to II. But a lot of HoI fans would probably strongly disagree with putting HoI IV above III and II. Especially considering II is from 2005.

Honestly can agree with placement of CK2 and 3. I prefer CK3 over 2 but I can't deny that CK2 just has more flavor and that... magic. I think i'd move Stellaris up a grade, I really love Stellaris. I also agree with Vicky 3. I never played 2, I've only played 3 and I enjoyed my time with it. Been meaning to jump into it again after the recent patch but I'm in the midst of learning EU4 so... one day haha.
Only other game I'd add would be Age of Wonders 4 and that would be... A bordering on S tier for me. Love that game.
And empire of Sins I think could have been good if it just got more updates, more things got fixed. I remember it just playing very mid and then the Romanos dropped it or... idk what happened exactly but it had promise!

I think once it gets a few more DLCs Vicky 3 will become amazing. The political system is pretty fun and the economy and pops system works quite well in my opinion. It is quite unpolished but at least it's not as bad as basegame EU4
Personal bias and preference is always part of these, but for me EU4 will always be GOAT with only Stellaris coming close.
I'd add Sword of the Stars on a technicality because I love the original, I'd actually put it on B level. The 2nd one is hot trash I still haven't figured out yet, F level.

Brother, I'm not a vic 3 defender, the game sucks, that being said the original Vic2 before dlc was DYSFUNCTIONAL.
I'm biased toward crusader kings 3 because it was the first paradox game that I understood from day one. First game I truly learned was hearts of iron 4.
Interesting to see other people's perception on Pdox games - you forgot Victoria1! Probably alongside HoI2 and CK1 my first titles. I guess you'd also need to consider the Patch Version and DLCs, with all DLCS CK2 is for sure the S title. Also DLC style has changed a lot, whilst HoI2 got two expansions (?) HoI 4 got tons of DLCs and I feel like I definetely liked both HoI2 and HoI3 better than 4 (I'd also definetly rank Stellaris, EU3 and Imperator over HoI 4) - bot of course as always it is very subjective.

Nah, Stellaris should be S with CK2. Only because Stellaris is in a class of its own when it comes to space strategy games. There is non other that even comes close imo. It's funny that I never even knew Warband is a Paradox game and I have 1000s of hours in it LMAO

Stallaris has always been a A game but patches has made it into a S tier.

Ive never played any game except for vic 2 since 2 years ago, only gfm, and i think i will get mad if i try all those other games and find out they suck and she put my vic 2 in C 😡. On another thing, wich games would you recommend me, im too used to vic 2 sistem that i dont know if im going to like another thing :c

Ck3 by far has the best modding cmunity out of all the games the amount of effort put in descion mods trait mods flavor mods and total conversion ones is insane props to all great ck3 modders out there.
I haven't ever seen ck3 mods played besides the got mod the timeline extension one and the one that adds china. Eu4 has ante bellum meiou and taxes third odyssey extended timeline europa expanded. Hoi4 has Kaiserreich fuhrerrich cold War mod millennium dawn in the name of the tzar old world blues apres moi le deluge ww1 mod tno road to 56 black ice pax brittanica.
@@losisansgaming2628there are at least two mods which adds in real-time battles. One of them is the crusader wars mod that adds the battles of TW Attila and another one adds the battles of Mount and Blade II Bannerlord. Another mod I use gives you more options to interact with your prisoners so you even get the possibility of simulating a legal system.
My tier list from the games I played (some of these were not developed by paradox itself)
SSS tier: CK2 with HIP mod
SS tier: CK2
S tier: Vic2, EU4, Stellaris, Mount&Blade(all games), Tyranny, Prison Architect
A.5 tier: Darkest Hour: A HOI game (it's outdated, but for it's time it was a definite S tier)
A tier: EU3, HOI4, HOI3
B tier: CK3, IR, city skylines
C tier: Sengoku, March of the Eagles
D tier: age of wonders: planetfall, galactic civilizations 2
E tier: if a game falls here can you even call it a game anymore?
VIC 3 - E tier. For some reason people these days think "polished" means pretty and easy to click modern ui. All they had to do was update vic2 ui, update graphics but also leave a "legacy" option for the old map style and that's it. A perfectly polished modern title that would have made them a bank from new players as well as vic2 fans.
Now they might attract some people who are completely new to paradox but most of those who started with eu4/hoi4/ck2 (the today's paradox breadwinner) will leave the game due to no war and vic 2 fans won't even touch it with a hazard suit on.
Stellaris should be in S tier
