I'm suffering from heart failure after a major heart attack and keep my sodium under 500 mg a day. I average from 280/310 most days. I've been doing this for five years since my heart attack. This means I eat no salt or anything processed with salt in it including bread. I also stay away from high sodium veggies like beets and celery. It isn't easy, but it is doable. Am I suffering from low salt? Nope. In fact my skin is clear and smooth and many of the wrinkles have disappeared. When I go walking with my neighbor during the summer the small bugs land on him to lick the salt in his sweat, they don't land on me at all. My blood pressure is now normal, my hearing and smell have also improved.

I just think of food with over 6% of daily sodium as literal poison designed to kill your, and I do get really weird symptoms from high blood pressure.

The moral of the story is when you eat a low salt diet , you have to exercise to take out some salt in your body . But eating no salt is also bad for health too as you exercise . The doctor never say he needs to exercise to reduce the salt intake on his body and a balance diet for high blood pressure is very important . Taking too less salt may increase heart disease .

As someone who almost died a few months ago from extreme hypertension, water retention and heart dysfunction I feel very lucky to have the chance to now eat food that I cook myself using the best low/no sodium ingredients. I love to cook with tons of various spices (the kind with no sodium in it) and I feel my dishes have never tasted better. Too much salt is an illusion of good taste. Now when I eat something too salty it really tastes disgusting and cheap. I now follow the guidelines of the DASH diet (against hyper tension) and the objective is to eat less than 1500mg of sodium per day. Not easy given the food industry is completely out of their minds with salt, but very doable when you take time to cook your meals with the right ingredients. I feel like I'm really tasting food now for the first time in a long time and I love it. It really helped my condition get better.

I have had hypertension, and major bypass and valve surgery, but the primary indicator for me was several bouts with congestive heart failure. This was fluid buildup around my lungs, and made breathing very difficult. This was all the result of eating what I like and not paying attention to the sodium levels in my food. They can drain off the fluid with Lasix, but I have to find a way to eliminate the salt as much as possible and that has been a big challenge for many of the same reasons mentioned in this video. I've had CHF 3 times, and never want to go through that again. Salt is like kryptonite for me, and I know that everyone is different, but I wish that food producers would find ways to subsitute salt with natural seasonings.

First of all I really really appreciated your journey...your honestly about not liking the foods you tried without salt. Amazing your transparency.
Honestly too..I'm seeing that Salt substitution is not good either ...especially especially if you have ANY kidney issues.
I love that the lady lady said it's better to just enjoy vegetables in their original state. I believe everyone knows that anyway to be truthful.
And I loved that you kept going back and having your vital checked with the Dr.
I do know we have to have some salt. BUT the VERY BEST WAY, in my opinion,
If just to stick with the daily requirement.
I think I'm going to do that.
Also one lady Dr. Said use lemon 🍋 juice, orange juice, lime juice and garlic. She showed just getting it already minced in a little jar.
I do know God made food the very best and only way to eat right. Vegetables and fruits and nuts in their original states.
The cooking shows and chef's honestly, have wonderful dishes but truthfully, again. ..only my own opinion, they're evidently not concerned with ppl's health..some of them.
They just love to cook. And I don't necessarily believe they are just in it for the money.. don't of them. I just believe they love to cook.

I have been on a low sodium diet for about 9 months now and it sucks. I love salt and The way it makes my food taste. It doesn’t have to be salty just have a good flavor. I haven’t been able to find a good substitute yet. I stick to it because with me it’s that serious but it is hard.

The title should be changed to “Is our sugar intake killing us?”. One of the best measures of insulin resistance is if you are salt sensitive. Consuming sugars is associated with insulin resistance, which causes the kidney to retain sodium resulting in high blood pressure (BP). On the other hand, if you reduce or remove sugars and refined carbohydrates in your diet, the decrease in plasma insulin concentration will stimulate sodium excretion by the kidney, resulting in a lower BP. Salt is not the culprit. Sugar is. The two-week low salt diet without lowering his BP indicates that Tai Kannu is metabolically healthy.

yes, I have always craved and eaten so much salty food like friend chicken, but I was always low blood pressure, but I don't like anything sweet. My dad was diabetic so no sweet in the house growing up except for his diabetic cookies which I bake for him, because my mom told me to make from a diabetic cook book, and still she wants me to use half the sugar in the recipe. I can't eat anything commercially made, because they all taste super sweet to me. I try to eat some sweet food, because I am also hypoglycemic

Amount of salt to be consumed depends on so many factors. People living in cold countries do not sweat, do not drink water,do not consume enough vegetables. But people living in tropical countries sweat a lot and drink lots of water. So if they eat so much less salt they will get into lot of health issues. No always low salt is not good and one formula for everyone is not possible.

    • @sophiejones304

Yes, you are correct. I have always like eating salty savoury food, and have no desire to eat anything sweet. I would only take a bite or two to taste any sweets, which toy sister's amazement, she always tells me that I am wasting a cake by taking just a few bites and putting in the fridge to be eaten later on or the next day with few bites again. She would throw my slice of cake away after 5days, because she thinks it's stale and just taking up room in the fridge. I was always low blood pressure all my life even when I'm pregnant so the doctor would tell me to eat food that are high in sodium, but cook salty food my family always said that my cooking is salty to their taste and when pregnant I always crave protein and salty food like friend chicken and stake. I would eat 2- 4 PC's of friend chicken everyday, but I am still low blood pressure. I realized that I used to work so much 14- 16 hrs/day and I was always sweaty so sweat all of the sodium. So me craving so much food high in calories and salty because my body needed it. I would eat two plates full eight times a day and people think I am starving myself. I am also very muscular for a girl and never step foot in the gym. I don't snack though, I just eat a well balanced meal, with mostly protein which could be fried chicken everyday and salad and carbs
