Back in the early 80's we use to take 12 to 14 barrels (55 gallon) a year of honey as our side job and it was really a hot and heavy job. My dad had a friend who did it for a living and would take 125+ barrels a year. Beekeeping was very different back then and even today 5 gallons is a big job also.
Love a man who comes prepared!thatcracked black pepper does lend a distinct but complimentary flavor to tomatoes. Love tomatoes talk anytime and yall have great information!
Radish microgreens taste amazing on a tomato sandwich. I toast some white bread, put a couple slices of tomatoes on it, salt & pepper, radish microgreens and duke mayo. It's like eating summer for lunch.
Sounds delicious
I shred a radish like grated cheese on top of eggs, sandwiches, and more.
👍 Lemon Boy is a really delicious tomato. I'm not a big tomato fan, neither is my son, but when he was little we grew that for the first time and it was really, really good. We both liked that tomato a lot. 🙂
We love Lemon Boy!
Totally agree on the yellow tomatoes. We grew our first Dr. Wyche's 3 years ago and were nervous to taste it because we had never eaten a yellow tomato. Those are now our favorites! Just trying that yellow tomato opened up a whole new world of trying new veggies like bok choy, kohlrabi and egg plant fries.
Yes, always be open to trying new types of foods. You never know what you're going to like! Try it once!
I just had three containers of tomatoes and I experienced blossom end rot in the second season of growing. As an emergency, I bought some cheap (family dollar) heartburn pills, ground them up in the blender with water and poured around the plants, and watered it in. Worked like a charm. Never had the problem the rest of the season. I understand this was a temporary fix but it worked Thanks for the vid. Havagudun Greg,Ya hear.
I knew about the calcium and blossom end rot but didn’t know about the mag sulfate and positive charges🤗. Thanks so much for all the great info!! God bless y’all!
I tried my first lemon boy tonight, it was great!!
Greg, those are some amazing tomatoes!
Would you please give us a tour of your garden?
I love to see your plants.
Will do soon
I had a tomato sandwich today made with my first Cherokee Purple. Yesterday I had one with a Moneymaker tomato. Tomorrow will be a Dad's Sunset tomato sandwich. 🍅Tomato sandwiches forever!!!!!🍅 (Or as long as the season and plants last🤞🏾)
Lemon boys make a great salsa. Very sweet flavor.
Loved it Gregg.
Every season since I followed your fertilizer program I have had perfect beautiful tomatoes! This last few weeks with over 8 inches of rain and high temps the pests are EXPLODING and I’m fighting them for every tomato I can get. It’s raining so much I can’t spray yet.
Thanks again for your show
We’re getting a lot of rain here lately too
Lemon Boy has been a favorite tomato of ours for years.
It's delicious!
Lemon boy is one of my favorites too
Great video. I’m calling this season.
The year of the Tomato 🍅
Can't wait!
Multiple "studies" have shown that, when blindfolded, experienced wine tasters cannot tell the difference between white and red wines. It's the eyes that fill in the missing information.
I can see this for the average person , I certainly notice the tannins when drinking red but to me it’s a Pepsi Coke argument . Both are cola , they taste different but they’re still both colas . It’s not like Root beer vs Coke where the flavor is so fundamentally different .
Great show and great info! Hoping our lemon boys and purple boys make it!
25 plus inches of rain after I planted my tomatoes.....and I am getting tomatoes but not as many as I'd hoped. Not much I could do about it tho.
😯 That’s a lot of rain!
@@gardeningwithhoss it was!!! And the ground was already saturated when that started.
I'm soooo glad for the show tonight. I've had the same prob with end rot. Beautiful, healthy, and hearty plants loaded with tomatoes and then...it happens. I've seemed to slow it down with the calcium nitrate, 20-20-20, and micro boost.
I had fun Hoss Tools and hopefully next season will be my best yet!
Always happy to have ya!
Should be a permanent co host
Wayne, you did a great job again. I’m partial to the yellow tomatoes too!
@@shadyacrefarm1005 He is always a great co-host!
I need directions to that tomato buffet Mr. Wayne talked about.
Great show. Thanks
Great show today fellas😊 very informative
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome show Greg as always! Glad to see y’all eating those great looking tomatoes!!!!
Glad your enjoyed the show!
Great show tonight. I have put a solo cup of land plaster in a 5 gallon bucket mixed it with a paint mixer on a drill then soil drench 1 gallon per plant. Some good information. Thanks
Great information. I use calcium carbonate instead of gypsum in an effort to keep my soil from becoming too acidic.
Boom! Bingo on that blossom end rot analysis! So glad to hear this come over the airwaves. Magnesium for development of foliage and blooms, calcium moving through the plant for blossom end rot. I'm a firm believer in the Ag Gyp too, and some goes in the planting hole, mixed with the fill soil, then broadcast on top a couple of times throughout the cycle. You're gonna have to watch Ol' Wayne, those mater slices were falling off of his sammich and your bread was barely covered. Well, he is a guest! :) I think you've talked me into some of those Lemon Boys!
Ha! You should definitely try it Tom!
Perfect timing I am battling blossom end rot as we speak love the show as always.
Learned allot tonight as I always do! Thanks Hoss!!👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
We have a Olive Oil Farm here in N. Florida. North Florida Olive Farm & Mill.
Loved this tomato talk with Wayne. I've not had any problems with blossom end rot; I thought it was due to the Epsom salt I stir in at planting time, but I guess not per Greg. ??? I also fertilize with Garden Tone and top dress the bed with composted cow manure and mushroom compost early Spring. I also have drip irrigation; so perhaps the consistent water helps.??? Now, diseases that's whole other story. I've made the mistake of planting 'maters' in the same spot as last year. Septoria Leaf Spot ugh Early blight will soon follow I'm sure.
Thanks for watching.
I love pickled radishes sliced thin with some onion. Great on a hot dog!
100% agree!
Thanks for the validation on BER I been preaching this formula heavy of a tablespoon of calcium nitrate and a cup of gypsum in the hole at planting and side dressing of the same at bloom set along with some compost. Sounds like I may need to up that. I also put a balanced fertilizer in at planting.
Good Info, didn’t have to much problem with blossom end rot, but more of a tomato cracking as season went on and ended up getting small tomatoes, they ripen to soon..getting ready just to pull them for the year...
Thanks for watching.
love me a tomato sandwich. same mayo, same bread, salt and pepper but I toast my bread. so good.
So good!
Great show
Thank you!
Thank you Greg for that information
Thanks for the support
Great show !! Really enjoyed it.
My large tomatoes are firing up right now here in Ohio -All from seed for my first time and some of my seeds this year are from HOSS and they are doing really well!
Happy to hear it!!
I loved the video. Thanks for the info.
The only reason that Mg "could" help BER is if there was an extreme excess of Ca and no Mg and K in the soil. Causing a Ca toxicity. This almost never happens.
I had blossom end rot on some of my Romas last year
Great show guys and sorry to say but we have blossom end riot too, all our tomatoes came from Hoss, we have over 80 Plants with 7 different varieties, the red snapper really took a hit the riot and now its been raining everyday for a week. Our plants are water logged from too much rain which has caused our tomatoes to split from the over abundance of water. I guess that's gardening
Glad you enjoyed the show and yep, that's gardening for ya!
Great show!💚
Glad you enjoyed it!
Since using plenty of bone meal and 5-1-1 Fish Emulsion, my blossom end rot issues went away. Coincidence? Maybe.. but that’s the only real changes I made. I feel like Fish Elumsion is a game changer.. It’s like they just drink the stuff and thrive!
Absolutely Loved This!!
Thanks so much!
Wayne knows how much pepper to put on a tomato sandwich.
Good show.
👏🏼 That he does! Glad you enjoyed it.
Love me some tomato talking!
Boy the timing on this couldn't be more appropriate. :)
Awesome glad it helped
Nice in-depth discussion of blossom end rot Greg. I did not know about the magnesium sulfate aspect of it. Have to make a note to get both around the tomatoes this weekend for best results on this year's crop. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful and that you enjoyed the show!
I start mine with some gypsum in the starting mix. The earlier you feed them calcium the better.
I have mixed non fat dry milk in water and watered the plants before blooming
Yes I buy it at a feed store and put it heavy mixed in the soil in the pepper and tomato rows at planting time . Works every time .
👏🏼👏🏼
Your shows are an inspiration
Thank you so much for your support.
@@gardeningwithhoss I have been following your videos for a while. I have never seen any videos including Extension videos that presents the material in a simple and clear manner. Well done.
I roasted some of the burgundy okra I got from you guys. The wife and I really enjoyed them. Simple and delicious 😋
Roasted okra? It doesn't dry out? That does sound 👍. Can you share your seasoning and technique?
He is a great co-host
We agree!
Dang those micro green trays look like they would be great seed starting trays for tomatoes an peppers then transplant to your 24 square trays or your 160 tray .
They are great trays!
Those trays look good for the micro greens.
Great show, going to have to get me some of them yellow tomatoes.
You must! Glad you enjoyed the show.
For blossom end rot may seem crazy but I have really good luck using a cup of whole milk on each plant and water it in .
Interesting but makes since
Interesting!
@@joesmo2840 It work for me . I just pick off all bad fruit and water in milk at least once or twice a week for about 2-3 weeks depending how bad problem is and next crop that comes in should be good to go
Microgreen tray needs to be 1/2 that size because i cant eat that much before they go bad
We have smaller sizes with our indoor light kits!
Try Epsom salt in the planting hole
Testing how sweet a tomato is, is with toast and peanut butter. Put that tomato on the peanut butter and toast and your mouth will do a happy dance.
Tomato and peanut butter? Never heard of that.
Think I’ll have to test that out with our oldest daughter! Blind taste test and not give her any warning it involves peanut butter. 😂 😂 😂
Greg, I wanted to hear you say, "Hmm that's good."
Thanks for watching.
I have been eating lemon boys every day for a while now. Of all the yellows I have tried they are the best. I will try purple boy next year and see if they are as good as the Cherokee purple. I am to the point now where I don't eat red tomatoes fresh. I just cook with them.
Sounds great!
Good grief. That Red Snapper is as big as a softball. Never grown one before but based on Hoss Tools recommendations, I've got seven Snapper plants just coming into blossom in the hoop house. There's nothing more annoying than a neighbor that grows giant tomatoes so I'll be sure to strut my stuff in another 5-6 weeks. Might give them a taste of calcium nitrate to fend off the dreaded BER if it's not too late for some insurance.
Strut your stuff! They’re delicious!
My tomato update from Indiana
I am growing these varieties. The race is not over but its where it is now.
Bellarosa - Very short plants. Shortest of all these. Producing well. Have had a little bit of rot on tomatoes. Not blossom end rot, but just bad spots. Not much but just a small amount. Taste is very good. Probably 2nd in production and taste, 2nd in size, 2nd best for problems. Will grow more next year.
Red Snapper - Most impressive looking tomato. Producing well. Have had a little bit of spotting on leaves. 1st in production and taste, 1st in size However 2nd worse for blossom end rot on the first bunch of tomatoes. I will grow again. I am guessing they will out product Bellarosas
Mountain Rouge- Great looking pink tomato. Best I have ever had. Looks like a Brandywine and taste like it without all the Brandywine issues
Big Beef - My best performer most years. Not great size and above average for taste. It is not winning the race compared to the determinate but I think it will win the marathon. This year I have had some pale leaves. My tomatoes have had some damage which is unusual for these solid performers for me. They will produce almost up to frost.
Jet Star - Solid performer every year. Tough plant. I grow it every year. This year no different. I think it will win the marathon too but the taste is not as good as Bellarosa and Red snappers but never any issues.
Amish Paste - First year and I am impressed. I have never seen a tomato that looks like a paste tomato that tasted like a slicer. I am probably the most impressed with this tomato just because its a great slicer and paste. Awesome.
San Marzeno - I like Italian food and sauces and the Italians rank this tomato the best....NOT for me. It produces a lot and the tomatoes are dry but the real reason is that i have tried these for the 4th time but EVERY year these are the worst for blossom end rot. No other tomato is close. Sorry, but I am done with these.
Tachi - First year, awesome paste tomato. Looks like 4H winner for paste. Great color and texture. Perfect for paste. I would say the best pasted tomato I have ever seen or grown if it wasn't for the Amish paste. They are out producing the Amish pasted, but the AP tomato has a better slicing appeal. I will grow these again.
German Green - Nice looking colorful green tomatoes, but I am a traditionalist and my tomatoes need to be red, reddish orange or pink to be at the top of the list. Will not grow again but nothing wrong with them . Huge plant.
Thanks for the input Franco.
2 5 gallons of honey! whoa. I am missing out on bees
Dukes is the best!
Dang right!
G8 show! Do you place your drip irrigation much deeper with tomatoes since some usually plant them deeper? Or do you plant your tomato plants next to the drip tape instead?
I wouldn’t put the drip tape any deeper. You can definitely just plant it to the side if you plant your maters deep. The other thing I’ve done is planting them horizontally in the trough created from covering the drip tape. Saves on digging a deep hole. Most the time though we just plant straight in top of the drip tape and come back as the plant grows and hill up the tomatoes.
Where did you get Armstrong gardening tool? You have parts for it ? And seeder that fits it. I bought part of one a few years ago out near where the Spanish flu showed up circa 1910 near Fort riley KS. I sure like single and two wheeled steel model. Need planter to fit it.

Do the micro green trays come with a humidity dome with them
no
Can bone meal in the planting hole be as effective for blossom end rot?
Bone meal is a good source of calcium, but gypsum is the best. It has a much higher percentage of calcium than bone meal.
Also keep in mind that bone meal generally takes longer to break down in the soil and be available to the plants.
Thank you everyone!
Where are the micro green trays at Hoss? I can not find them on the website brother?
hosstools.com/product/1020-shallow-microgreen-growing-tray-with-holes/
I mix in some powdered egg shells into my soil and will add more when planting. Would you say it’s on par with gypsum or bone meal for absorption?
No, crushed eggshells take years to break down. It is a myth it would have any impact on current or even following crop.
@@Lyndsay-jh2um There is a big difference in crushed eggshells and powdered. You are correct for crushed, but powdered (I use a coffee grinder to powder the crushed and cleaned eggshells) breaks down much faster, according to several gardening websites based here in the States.
Eggshells for me. No rot ever
Thanks for watching.
Went to your website can't find the micro greens trays...any idea when I can buy one.

Calcium End Root is a Huge Buger !!
Sure is
Question: why are my tomatoes prematurely ripening. They're turning red when they're only about the size of a golf ball, they are porter house and big boys.
What is you temperature? Sometimes when it is too hot this can happen.
So cucumbers are fruits too because they have seeds,??
Yep!
Would love to have bees but I'm allergic so that will never happen 😪
Oh no! 😣
Put microgreen in the sandwich
YES! We do that often!
Seed packages too far to see varieties. It would have helped if you had told us the names.
Purple Boy, Lemon Boy and Red Snapper! :)
