I had a CZ 360 scramble bike around 1970 that had no reed valves etc but very fast especially on the beach but prone to piston holing that I later learned was due to the thin aluminium head gasket glowing and causing pre ignition!
The Thundersprint used to be in Northwich in Cheshire and was a great event,I remember seeing Sammy there with his Gileras. But I think it got too big for the town and it moved to Darley Moor and then a race circuit in Anglesey. But there was an entrance fee and the organizers laid out money to run it but two years of terrible weather left them well out of pocket. So that was that...it never ran again.
Fascinating machine, I've read about it and how quick it was. It reminds me of an early Kawasaki A1R 250 racer of about 1970, wonder if Sammy's museum has one of those....?
It was made earlier than 1970 since Bill Ivy was riding it in 1969 for the season after yamaha withdrew all bikes at the end of 1968. Ivy died in 1969 in germany because of the bike.
I had a Miller frame for my first TL. The difrence between his and Honda's frames was chalk n cheese. Thunder frame it should have been called. Instead "tall-boy" was its name..
Not just a problem with Czech metalurgy..Yamaha had same issues on their V-4´s ,but that was smaller engines and their main bearings hold more and better...Those four cylindres were made four...One is here, one is in Prague in Technical museum, one is in Vienna by Mr.Faber´s museum and last have some frenchman named Bayle or so..(sorry for that) And this bike was made in 1967 for 1968 season,so can´t compete with faster Hondas and Yamahas, because they stopped racing by season 1967...
Yes, it locked up after testing, and Bill had taken his safety-helmet off and was cruising back to the pits. When it locked up he slid into kerbing and very sadly he died from his injuries.
Nobody knows if this is the bike that Bill Ivy rode according to the Prague Technical Museum, only three complete Type 673 racers were completed by the factory plus a few spare engines and there were other riders Jack Findlay, Ginger Molloy, Silvio Grassetti and as Sammy mentioned František (Franta) Šťastný so who knows who rode what.
Wow ! that's one of the most exciting bikes I've ever seen !!
