I remember reading about this plane in the Time-Life "Story of Flight" series. Fell in love with it. It would never win any beauty contests, but the very best planes rarely do.
The Pilatus/Fairchild (whatever makes you smile) is a perfect example of sticking a pair of wings, an engine and cargo space to a SWISS ARMY KNIFE !!!!
Got to watch the Fairchild factory pilots fly the Porter several times way back in time..... The Porter really is something to watch takeoff and land. Especially in beta thrust prior to touchdown. Most impressive.
I love and miss this plane, I remember when I was a little boy this plane came to landing at my village during American cam to my country in Vietnam war
Still one of my favourites of all time, I love every Pilatus model made. I thought the Fairchild license built Porters had Garrets with a different intake and exhaust arrangement and the original Pilatus the P&W?
It’s really too bad this film was damaged and has a bunch of sections missing. I would love to see it in its entirety. I’m building a 64” span r/c model right now finishing it in Air America colors.
@@PeriscopeFilm Yes, it was a Air America aircraft. It collided with a Cessna U-17, also know as a C-180. Both birds were lost and all on both aircraft perished, sadly!
I owned s/n 2040 N3608R. It was a 1968 Fairchild Hiller Porter. Amazing machine.

The pilot in this show is Russ Howard. Best pilot I have ever seen or flown with
Love these planes. They make so much sense, especially living here in Alaska.

There are some unbelievably short landings in this film.
