You may add contrast afterwards in PP, but not micro-contrast, what the Zeiss lenses usually excel for. And I'm not only talking about contrast in terms of lights/shadows, but especially with regards to textures/fine resolution (high grade glass and coatings = the famous Zeiss' 3D-like feel). What you get with the Zeiss lenses is not easy to achieve with other manufacturers. Plus the colors, the legendary T-stop light efficiency and the all-metal/high-precission build quality and fit & finish which is also outstanding. I do love getting the highest possible sharpness from a lens, of course yes, but also the rest of characteristics I mentioned above and, the Zeiss, all-in-all are one of the best all-round lenses in the market. There may be some lenses that can beat this particular Zeiss in terms of sharpness, but those are not many, if they do it's not by much, and what about all the other characteristics? can they really beat also the Zeiss' color, T-stop light efficiency, transparency, contrast & micro-contrast (3D), T* coating, flare resistance, bokeh, build quality / fit & finish / durability...?

There is so much more to a lense than solely sharpness. I own the Zeiss 85mm and it is awesome, perfect combination with my Nikon D4/D800!

I've owned the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f1.4 for 6 months now and all I can say is my goodness what a fantastic lens. The amazing build quality and sharpness of this lens is amazing. The sharpness is pin sharp right across from corner to corner and once you get use to the manual focus, it blasts away any of the current line up from any of the present lenses of this focal range from any other manufacturers.

I use some Zeiss glass. Namely the distagon 21mm for my landscape. The micro contrast Zeiss brings to the table is that it actually creates a 3D effect. I love zeiss colour rendition as well. I do have Lightroom and photoshop Cc and in neither can you add the micr contrast that a zeiss lens has. I actually have a few lenses and a crop sensor D7100 and fx D750. I use Tamron G2 series lenses as well that I highly recommend but all and all nothing has the image quality that I prefer over the Zeiss glass. Sharpness ain’t everything. For example too sharp is not always a preference for portrait photography.

Contrast is more important. You can't just "add" what is not there.

    Matt, This is Your Best Video in Recent Times ... MIND-BLOWN ... ! ... loved it .. ! .. fantastical ... Thanks
Best 85mm Lenses (these are all old classics, with less sharp wide-open aperture performance) :
    1). Zeiss 85 Planar T*
    2). Nikkor 85 -- 1.4D or 1.8D or 1.8G
3). Canon 85/1.2 L (despite its slow AF)
I would Never Buy These Modern Optics though they are sharp wide-open :
    SAMYANG 85 (even if it has affordable price) .. & .. TAMRON 85 VC .. & .. SIGMA 85 (even if they make ART version) .. & .. ZEISS BATIS 85/1.8 .. & .. ZEISS MILVUS 85 .. & .. SONY 85/1.4 G-Master .. & .. Nikon 85/1.4G

Interesting. Why is the modern zeiss milvus 85 not better than the classic Zeiss 85 planar?

I have been looking for an 85m, sorry Nikon :) I went with the Zeiss :) I would also like to add, some photographers can stick with auto all they like, manual is not a bad thing at all, it takes you to a better level in my opinion :) I’ve seen people focus SHARP images on manual and then those who don’t do so well and then say it’s the lens :) if your taking pics at F1.4 it’s not going to be at its sharpest

I understand Rsa is an issue with the zeiss 85f1.4(focus shift) and if the lens is manually focused while stopped down to desired f stop, then focus is nailed This focus shift is backward and iv,e checked against the nik af-s 85/1.8 and definatly it hammers the nikon when one technically plays boss with the zeiss.Anyone else agree?:Disagree?

I am a portrait photographer so shoot in the real world. This lens is sharp, but perhaps not clinically sharp. Even with a 7' octa as main, this lens is so sharp an older client got a glance at my tethered laptop and was horrified at all the imperfections like wrinkles, blemishes it still showed even with that butter soft light. Second, out doors the micro contrast gives a 3d look you just don't get with modern lenses. As photographers we must struggle to make a 2 dimensional photo have the appearance of depth. Zeiss produces it and this lens in spades. I use the 35 mm distagon because even stopped down for environmental portraits where you don't blow out the bg for cheap separation, that lens has the 3d look while keeping the background in focus. Have you ever had someone look at one of your photos and say it wasn't sharp enough? Maybe jerk off pixel peepers who arent photographers, just computer geeks with a camera who never take photos. But real photographers understand the qualities of zeiss glass. I shot with many graduates of what was the best photo school in the nation, and they loved their zeiss glass. Focus confirmation arrows/meatball on my d850 nail focus for me on my mf lenses. My film camera an F5 does the same on film. The problem with photography is around 2000 it was innundated with math geeks who reduce everything to numbers. They make photos by the numbers. Sorry, spread sheets and blue prints are not art. And the black and white work that this lens produces is stellar. Won a print competition with a portrait taken with the 100 mm macro planar and I believe the incredible detail in the fine weave of the dark knit shirt is something they don't often see because those high element count lenses turn that to mud. As an old radio buddy used to say, I live nd shoot in real ville, I don't photo brick walls and test patterns.

I have opinion on all Zeiss lenses. They are all different. Not Better but way different with unique drawings. I had Canon f1,2 L II... I am using Nikon 85 f1,4 G for digital AND this Lovely Zeiss planar zf.2 on my Nikon Fm3. I am also using Leica M monochrome CCD v. with NEW Zeiss ZM 35 f/1,4 Distagon Waaaaaaaay beter then Leica Summilux 35mm ASPH FLE wich I also used. Finaly Hasselblad CF planar 80, Distgaon CF 40 and Sonnar 150mm.... BOTTOM LINE !!! VERY DIFFERENT APPROACH IN LENS MANUFACTORING... To my eyes ZEISS has MUCH MORE PLEASING RESULTS....... I M H O !

Its a interesting perspective but I dont get it why using old manual lens that doesnt compete with modern lenses. Its cool to collect but not to invest.

There are many legacy lenses that are actually better than the modern equivalents. There are many more that are "just as good" as the modern lenses. However, the benefit to buying legacy glass rather than modern glass is better build quality, better image quality or sharper (not uncommon), a huge cost savings (because lots of people don't know how or don't want to use manual lenses), better ergonomics and usability (aperture rings, focus throw, etc), etc.
Personally, I love old legacy glass. Without a doubt, some of the best photos I have ever taken have been with "outdated" lenses (for example, no modern lens was as sharp on my Pentax K-5 as the old manual focus 50mm f1.4 that I paid $70 for).
