Yes, even Rory Gallagher/Jimi Hendrix/SRV as great as they are, blend into mindless shredding after a few bars for me. Whereas Knopfler spans many different guitars and textures and makes them all sound so unique and tasteful. It's not about how loud and fast you can play

speed is also an emotion, shred can be very empowering and meaningful if played at the right time in a composition... typical boomer comment who think Gilmour is the pinnacle of guitar, I love Pink Floyd but music didn't stop evolving after them, keep an open mind.

Knopfler’s playing is always amazing but let’s not forget the rest of the band. This is such a great piece of music. The band brilliantly slows down just to create a massive crescendo. My favorite live versions are from the mid 80’s when they had perfected the performance. Absolutely love what the sax player and rhythm section are doing. When I’ll get a time machine my first destination will be a Dire Straits concert at Wembley in 1985.

Hey Thom this is really great👍😎 really one of the most beautiful renditions of Sultans - very well done!! Did you create the backing track?
    2 things to note:
MK always uses a volume pedal so that helps with the volume differences between the initial and last bit. ( the volume pedal is also what he uses to get the well known singing notes in Brothers in arms)
The other thing is that he gets a lot of his speed by using hammer- ons and pull-offs so he does not pluck every note with his right hand. This is particularly true for what he refers to as the “twiddly bits” right at the end (famous arpeggiated triplets right at the end). Also something to keep in mind os that Mark is left handed but plays right handed so hos left hand is particularly strong with hammer-ons and pullofs with which he gets a quite percussive sound ( like the main riff of Walk of life)
Anyway you have his feeling and sound very close and play it with a lot of feeling! Well done😎👍👏.
With Mark its often the notes that he does not play which adds to the simplicity and beauty of his playing
As you can tell I am a lifelong MK fan. He inspired me to play guitar
Thanks for a great video 👍😎

Hearing Sultans was my inspiration to switch to fingerpicking, and it was the best choice of my life as a guitarist. This feeling when I finally nailed both solos and later won a high school talent by playing them years ago - priceless! So many things and nuances to talk about in this solo! And you have to listen to the Alchemy version. To me, it's the best one.

So I'm curious what people think about the right hand. I teach guitar and I'm really thinking that the way knopfler pull🎉s this off is he uses his thumb, index,p and middle fingers, and for solos like those first two themes on the d, g, and b strings, he sets his thumb on the D string and then his index and middle on the next two strings, this enables him to play each note without repeating a finger. For the famous fast 3 note arpeggio sequence at the very end, it would seem like he'd start with index, and then use his thumb on the B string string, and the middle for the last of the four notes in the pattern, then just repeats. That way you're alternating the next in the middle on the high string and I having to repeat a finger.

04:57 Well, there is a formula he is using the Aeolian scale which in ascending interval form consists of a key note, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step. Of course music theory is just a suggestion of what might work and why and not a law as Mark Knopfler so wisely states. But there sure are formula's.
