    When I was 13, I wanted one of the Hollywood kits but wound up with an MIJ. Fast forward 45 years and I found one to restore and I've been gigging with them ever since. Yeah, I'm old.

    Thank you, I have a 1967 Ludwig Gold Sparkle that had the Toms mounted on the original stand. 40 years ago when my mother bought me the set for Christmas.I added a new double tom mount in the bass then . I took your advice and use my Ringo Star roof top mount and put it in the bass drum and am so happy.

    Very nice..good restoration. I have a set of Ludwig 'Club Date' drums from 1962 manufacture: 16 x 22" bass (with the original heads), 9 x 13" tom, and a 15" floor tom. Nickeled (not chrome) hardware. Brass Ludwig 'keystone' badges with no serial numbers. Found them at a garage sale years ago bought them for $125.00. The original finish was a sort of 'cream' and red duco enamel..the finish was so beat up I stripped the shells down to the wood and clear-coated them in the natural wood finish. Good solid kit..warm funky sound. Never know what you might find at garage/estate sales.

    Well done with restoration, they sound great, it's a lovely drum kit. I still use my 1967 Hollywood silver sparkle with '68 Acrolyte snare. I use the Speed king as back up pedal now but still gets used if I'm in the mood for it. The kit is happy with medium tuning for gigs and sound great in studio tuned down a little as you have demonstrated.

    I remove the T-rods from the bass drum of my vintage Lud's and I use standard tension rods. I reinstall the T-rods only when I am displaying the kit for show. The T-rods are a nuisance when gigging because they catch on almost everything from electrical cables and clothing.

    yeah, thats a pretty interesting video, i was in jr. high then, had a pretty cheap japanese kit,wasn't in the band,but the drummers in the band were my friends, and we traded catalogs, i had a rogers catalog, which they all wanted to borrow, and i had a ludwig catalog, probably 1967 or so, gradually i got over to 3 guys' houses to see their drums, i used to like to show off a little,i had a wicked left,listened to the who,hendrix, while they were playing bolero... ,anywho, i got word through the grapevine that my kinda friend danny got a new set, they were well off, had a pool, i went over there one friday after school, crammed in his bedroom was a new ludwig hollywood set paiste cymbals, sky blue pearl...he played for a while, then he let me play, man, that was something, i played for only a few minutes ,when his dad poked his head through the door...watched me, pointed to me ,and said to his son,he's good... then i had to stop, the rules were the same at his house as they were at mine, when dad comes home from work, drumming stops!!!

    Wow, I just discovered your channel. I have a 1962 Hollywood kit with the double 8 x 12 clip on toms in white marine pearl. My father bought them for me when I was 15 in 1962 for around 513.00 bucks. I played many a gig with this set off an on until the early 2000's. This set still looks great today with some minor yellowing of the wrap. I added black tape racing stripes in the late 60's when I was in college and they are still on the drums today. The chrome on the Supraphonic snare didn't last well and flaked some. I wore out the Speed King pedal, it broke somewhere along the line and I threw it away I guess because I don't have it now. In a group called the "Vons" we played cover songs , Beatles ,soul music, etc., and later in a group called the Vagabonds more jazz and rhythm and blues. High school sock hops and fraternity parties were the most fun. The lead guitar player in both groups , Barry Bailey, went on to play lead in "The Atlanta Rhythm Section" until his retirement due to health issues. Thanks for this video. BTW: My bass drum has one little 1/2' cigarette burn that I patched up, but I put some plastic wood in it and then covered it up a little piece of white tape.

    The cymbal stand threads are 1/4 - 20 threads. The standard for years. Now it's either 6 or 8 mm depending on the company and line of drums.

    Great kit! Ringo switched to using the Hollywood model (maple) around 1967. Of course he still taped tea towels to the tops of all the drum heads to get that kind of dead, boxy sound. Keep up the great work!!!

    I believe and I could be wrong but The 67 Ludwig catalog refers to those external bass drum spurs As simply “FOLDING SPURS” Also note that later on I think sometimes in the 70s Ludwig started putting the larger lugs on the 8 x 12 Toms, Which more or less standardized the lug sizes of all the drums,.... bass drums, AND Toms; All The drums drums now have the same larger size lugs Which now makes all the lugs interchangeable with each other,....which I tend to prefer I never really did like those small Tension casings or lugs that they put on the 8 x 12 toms In the earlier years Ludwig has now more or less brought all the drums into alignment With Each other! This I believe puts the drums more into focus with each other when they started putting the larger lugs on the 8 x 12 times but that’s just my own personal preference
    Just my own personal preference and opinion mind you for what it’s worth!

    Yeah I did that with my Speed king pedal, as well! it was a used pedal that I bought at the professional drum shop in Hollywood California and they had a whole bunch of them lying around in the back in the repair shop area so I more or less “Frankensteined” A pedal Together from various speed kings and yes the lubricant was so hard and dried it was like cement I took the parts home I dipped I them in paint and varnish remover that Jellylike stuff that burns your skin And it just dissolved all the hardened grease I cleaned all the parts I mean I took the whole pedal apart I emptied both postsI cleaned the ball bearings, the springs, the plungers, the insides of the posts etc. and then I re-lubricated the pedal when I re-assembled it, I used WD-40 on all the parts first and then I used “LUBRA PLATE” which is a Silicone-based I believe lubricant used for car parts! And yes Stan at pro drum showed me that little technique of tossing the pedal up with one hand and tapping the post with a soft mallet to pop off those caps: very easy and works every time!
    I relubricated everything I reassembled the pedal and the mechanism works beautifully now smooth quiet fast and did I say smooth the only drawback to the speed king pedal is that stupid steel “linkage strap” that they have on there that sucks! Ridiculous side sway and unwanted movement not very precise at all! Also, the hinge on the heel plate it’s just a pin very primitive Ludwig needs to work on those two points more ball bearings at the strap and hinge would be nice again just my opinion

    My 1966 Ludwigs have maple, poplar mahogany from the inside out. Bill Ludwig III told me they never made an all maple shell. He told me that around 1986. They had introduced a nice new thin shell around that time. May have been all Maple by then, but I am not sure. People are all gaga about all maple, but some of the best drums ever made did not have a whole lot of maple, if any, in them. I have been told that gluing maple to maple was a problem at the time and thus other woods were used to get a good bond. Glues have improved. Not sure the sound has. So many guys are tuning really low and flabby and the drums have a character, but actually no tone. there is a difference. Took me 40 years to recognize that, but I am still learning.

    • @brianchisnell1548
      @brianchisnell1548 2 роки тому

      66 would be mahog/poplar/mahog unless stained. Themogloss, walnut stain used a maple outter ply. Maple was never used under a wrapped kit in those days.

  • @oldenmusicianco.4527
    @oldenmusicianco.4527 4 роки тому

    Not that I have a say in how you tune your drums, but in the five piece configuration it would totally sound better in a triad sort of tuning. Floor tom tuned to the root note, 13” rack tuned to the third, 12” tuned to the fifth. With the other toms, tune the second floor tom to the fifth, an octave below the 12” rack was before, and with the 15” as well, tune the 15” up to the third, the 13” up to the fifth and the 12” to the root an octave above the 16”. In both situations, it will sound a lot more satisfying and musical. Make sure the drums are tuned within their range of course, but those formulas will make it sound way better.

    You could probably tell me which Ludwigs I own. I actually own 17 drum sets but I'm more of a player than a knowledgeable gear person. So I guess I'm curious on all the drums I have but specifically the Ludwigs just because they were a re-wrap and they don't have the badges on them. The person who sold them to me said they were indeed Ludwigs but what reinforces that is the hardware and my ears; they certainly sound like Ludwigs and it's is hard to put into words what differentiates the sound of one drum company from another. Anyway I have not started to make videos yet. That's one thing I am not good at. Just purchased a zoom Q4n video camera so hopefully I can start putting some of the kits up on youtube so you drum experts can tell me what the hell I'm playing lol! Oh and that tip about a cymbal stand making a good camera stand I will have to try out. Glad I caught that!

      I have one Ludwig floor tom (16x16), in the same gold sparkle finish. It doesn't have same badge like modern Ludwigs, and it came with some Amati cans (lol!), so I was suspicious that it was actually Ludwig. That ft stood for 15-16 years at a friend's basement, and I just recently found out that it's vintage Ludwig, probably from the mid to late '60's. I'm not sure how much could I get for that, but I plan to clean it and smooth it, change heads... Can you recommend me what heads to put? I usually use Evans G2 clear over G1 clear on toms, but I guess that coated heads would fit better on vintage tom
      Thanks in advance and best regards from Belgrade, Serbia

    One of the main problems with vintage tom holders, is that the threads can wear out, causing the toms to slide down into the bass drum.
    You should really try for a Supra or Jazz Festival snare.

  • @jarhead7206
    @jarhead7206 5 років тому

    Not bad, spot on with the comments on Pearl tube trash cans. However if your restoring a players vintage kit which has mostly devalued and not much to lose but still sounds great and shells intact ....rewrap or refinish , replace that dinosaur falldown hardware with Gibraltar or DW systems , and sell the old garbage to a primitive neanderthal on ebay, lol. Your review of those hex head nuts is comical, those drummers were carrying a closed end wrench with them to get those setup and toredown. However you could put a standard size thread wingnut to replace that junk for quicker setup.
    Yea, no single pedal outperforms a functional Ludwig Speed King...to this day.

    Great video, thanks! Putting the final cleanup touches on my father's early '65, double 12" Hollywood kit. I know it is an original matched set, but the 12" toms do not have serial numbers or trade mark symbol on the badges, was that normal in 65? The floor tom and bass do have the serial number and trade mark symbol. I was wondering about heads, will give your combination a try. Thanks!

    • @jungdrummer4028
      @jungdrummer4028  6 років тому

      Hey there! I believe that I normal. If they have red felt mufflers they are of the era of "pre serial" or on the cusp. Also, badge/sets were often thrown together to use up remaining stock. Maybe that's why the toms don't have serials (pre serial) and ft and bass do. Google "pre serial" Ludwig 60s.

      Thanks! There are 2 types of rockers - decent shells w/granitone grey paint and then later shells that are junky MIJ. The heads bepend on what your going for. If you do coated emperors on tom and coated ambassadors on bottom - it always a win on most drum sets - grow your ear from there.

    Nice job with the restoration! I tried using speed kings before but when I install it on the hoop (modern kit), the metal connection is too far forward and it stratches the drum head. Any tips to that other than installing it "shallower" on the bass hoop?

    • @jungdrummer4028
      @jungdrummer4028  5 років тому

      Thanks! That happens with speed kings. Make sure that metal connection (pushing) isn't bent and also make sure the pedal is remaining flush on the floor as it's being played. You can also do a hack on the hoop. Like - using drum stick sleeves wedges between the speed king hoop clamp and the hoop to beef up the stability/flushness. Hope that makes sense.

    Ludwig hardware was always pitiful. And I'm sorry to say but build quality of the drum shells in the 60's (after Ringo) and 70's was very poor. Ludwig today is making drums and hardware with really excellent build quality, and the Supraphonic 402 is to me the most versatile and best sounding and playing snare drum you can buy (in my opinion).
