Using the Multiplication Rule to Find Compound Probabilities - Examples

  • In this video, I go through a couple of different types of examples of how to use the multiplication rule to find the probability of an "and" event. I also show you how this can be combined with using the complement and what happens if events are independent.
    Note: This video is from a course I am teaching through my college but I share it in case others find it helpful! Any section numbers mentioned match up with the textbook "Business Statistics 8th edition - Groebner".

    If one is defective, would one assume that all 3 are? If 1 is defective, but the other 2 are not, would one just multiply .005*.995*.995? thanks

      Emp Xnes Sorry for missing this comment but in case anyone has the same question: If you want to say "what is the probability 1 is defective?", you have to remember it could be the first one, the second one, OR the third. So the probability would be 0.005*0.995*0.995 + 0.995*0.005*0.995 + 0.995*0.995*0.005. You could also use the binomial distribution here.
