Oscar is one of my piano heroes and I appreciated Andre, too! Thanks for sharing the video. A couple of things strike me as I watched. 1), no music on a page, it was just from the head and heart. 2), they both appeared to be having fun. And 3) they both appeared to be genuine and true gentlemen. The world has said goodbye to so many of these great jazz pianists. I'm so thankful that videos like this allow their music and their personalities to remain with us a bit longer. People like this continue to inspire me to play better!
I have watched this many times and every time I love it more. Andre has his own style but watching him Oscarize his own playing beside the OP himself is incredible. The way they listened and responded is a true communion of geniuses. I love both of these guys
Previn was a phenomenal jazz pianist. He was right there with Oscar in that improvisation.
Andre watching Oscar's hands tells me everything I need to know about why he became great across so many genres: he obviously always felt that there was more he could be learning. There's gold buried within that lesson, my friends.
This interview is an art masterpiece.
andre is the most modest person ever. the entire interview he acts as though he's a mega rookie at jazz piano and at the very end he just rocks the house down.
He was a very successful jazz pianist also, much recorded work now sadly unavailable but he most assuredly paid his dues. He was amazing. For him so modest here is such a testimony to his admiration for OP. ❤️❤️❤️

@Lyles music Previn couldn't swing like Oscar (no one could) but he is a legend in his own right. If you knew more about music you wouldn't have made such a ridiculous comment.

Andre just is the coolest cat I tell ya! He always knows what to say at just the right time! Never boring or predictable. And he can play with the best of them don't kid yourself. Being respected like that by the great Oscar P! Just wow....
Who on earth gave this a thumbs down? I'm not even a great jazz fan and I was lost in admiration at the tremendous technique on display and the mutual admiration both men had for each other.
I saw the original broadcast over 45 years. It’s still is as fresh and amazing as it was then. What a treat to see again!

Andre recently joined Oscar in that great pianist heaven. RIP piano legends.
The craziest part... playing together, they both sound like an Art Tatum solo.

And of course both were directly influenced by and inspired by Tatum! The story of Oscar Peterson's first encounter with Tatum when he heard a recording as a kid, and how it shook him so much that he didn't practice for weeks afterwards is a well-known part of his biography. Andre Previn as a boy-wonder prodigy was floored by Tatum when he first heard him (as was/is everyone else!) and was inspired to transcribe some of his solos. Tatum influenced the playing of both men for the rest of their lives....

I was a huge fan of Oscar Peterson and Andre Previn both. Unfortunately for me I never got to see Oscar in concert...anytime I had an opportunity something always came up and prevented me from going. Interestingly though I met Maestro Previn in person on a flight from LA to London in 2005. I saw him in the lounge and recognized him immediately so I went over and I said "Hey! I know you! You're Andrew Preview!" We had a good laugh and I told him how much I admired his work. He was very gracious and, as chance would have it we were sitting next to each other on the flight over. It was a once in a lifetime experience to spend time talking with one of the 20th Century's most accomplished and versatile musicians. I was very sad when I heard that he passed. RIP
I remember a bit more than a decade ago my mother telling me she found Oscar Peterson intimidating, but I always felt that watching something like this makes you a better player and a better musician. Something rubs off by osmosis, even if it’s just excitement-a renewed conviction and a will.
It's Oscar's game! His left hand alone is capable of "wasting" an entire rhythm section. He was and always will be in a class of his own. A master class from a real "classy" master.
try to play it - it looks so simple, "like the scale" as Andre Previn says, - but the left walks the rhythm / beat and plays a melody - and then the hand must be totally relaxed to make the "vibrato"..
Before his stroke. He got some of his left back, but not like it was. Still, a long and wonderful career!

Am I the only one who enjoys Oscar Peterson breaking down technique and telling his stories about as much as I do him playing? BTW Andre Previn is such a good interviewer didn't know he was that good. R.I.P. Mr. Peterson and Mr. Previn.

Saw this 1970’s it was a huge influence on my years of playing . Mostly the generosity of spirit between great musicians.
What an inspirational meeting of the minds. And that hug at the end was beautiful.
Wow, man. I don't know what to say after that. I love hearing them both share their views on music. I really enjoy hearing them both play, too! Music can make you nod your head and smile when there is something flashy and smokin', which is really great. When you hear something that creates an ache and heaviness in your heart, I think that is the absolute best. Oscar Peterson does that. Beautiful man.

2 of my favorite pianists. I love classical & jazz. NO ONE plays Bach, like Gould did. Bach's harpsichord pieces (like the Goldberg variations) just sound so much fuller & more beautiful on a piano, IMO.
I remember watching this live on TV with Boston Pops PBS many years ago. As a keyboard player myself, I was blown away by Previn and his chops. Anyone who know anything about being a conductor, know the incredible musical chops and lexicon that you need for that job alone. I wouldn't have been surprised at him pulling off a concerto, but this was truly surprising... the duet with Oscar starts about 2:35
As a proud Canadian it makes me sad to google list of great canadian musicians and oscar is never there ..in one interview he did he said it was a colour thing at that time. I sure hope not but ? For me he was a treasure and a Charming gracious man who all Canadians should laud from the rockies....never will he come again....the wisdom aired inthis great progrM is wisdom worth remembering....we. Miss him...a 💎 gem

I've had the pleasure of seeing them both live in NYC, on separate occasions. Both were great pianists, but Oscar has always been my favorite.
I was just going to listen to Part 1 but here I am and the richer for it! What a marvelous conversation/concert! Certainly a time that has sadly past. Is anyone half interested in seriously excellent music anymore? Like classical music, real jazz has to be passed hand to hand from generation to generation.

I saw this on WNET from NYC when I was a teenager and it blew me out of the room. It's still one of the greatest improvs ever captured on tape. When 2 brilliant musicians come together magic happens. This is that magic.
This influenced me in such a huge way as a kid. It stood me in good stead throughout my career.

i know (and looove) oscar peterson but - cause i'm mainly listening to jazz - didn't know andre previn. wow! what a great pianist!!!
Andre was thrilled to be interviewing him (look at the preceding parts), and he did a great job. Keep in mind I think that the Previn/Kostelanitz version of Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin is the best ever for a big bunch of reasons.
Anyway, Andre was right for interviewing Peterson, who is a piano god. Enough said, as I played pro piano in the classical world for at least 8 years, and much more decades in other instruments in many genres after that. Yeah, so what, I'm old, but not stuffy. Old and young can be either old or young in attitude. Not trying to be pompous, just respectful.
Anyway,this is a great clip to go with the others before it. If there is a heaven, Oscar is playing the ultimate Bosendorfer of the Universe constantly every day of our existence in our timeline, and loving his art and freedom. Yeah, that's overblown, but I don't care. In any case, we'd all love to hear that.
Let's love the respect between these two guys, and dig the tremendous spontaneity.

Wow. Andre is really studying Peterson's hands. Fascinating. OP wasn't studying Previn but it's easy to see they really enjoyed playing together!

What can I say? Thank you for posting this. Many years ago (back when God was a boy), I went to a Jazz festival to hear Oscar and Joe Pass in concert. Unfortunately Oscar had taken ill and could not perform. Regret it to this day. Don’t get me wrong, Joe Pass ain’t no slouch!!!
I don't know if I saw it when it was first broadcast, but I remember it being sometime in the 70's or early 80s, certainly not past 1981. I too was fascinated by it and I was surprised at how much I remembered of it. I watched this and went out and bought the Columbia LP, "Piano Starts Here" by Art Tatum, because it had "Tiger Rag" on it. The ensuing years have only augmented the value of this show.

Hampton Hawes had a quartal and quintal voicing concept with his left hand and blues lines with his right hand. Oscar played a lot more notes than Hampton. No one lives forever. I enjoyed Oscar's music. I learned a lot from him. Andre does not play as many notes but he swings just as hard as Oscar and he plays witha lot of feeling. Thank you newjack21. I have really enjoyed myself tonight. This kind of music is about your personal expression.

That wonderful recording with Oscar Peterson seems to have been done in London. Only a year earlier Andre Previn recorded on vinyl as conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra the finest version ever of the Rachmaninov 2nd Symphony.
I read one comment here - that said Previn was second to Oscar in ability. I agreed - UNTIL I heard one segment of fast and beautiful playing, thinking it was Oscar; it wasn't: it was Previn. IMO, BOTH are amazing gifted and fun to listen to. - Gurn Blanston
I remember Keith Jarrett being asked who he listened to when he was young and he mentioned Previn and Peterson together. If you go back and listen to recordings of Previn when he was played jazz fulltime you realise he was a real loss to jazz - even if he was a gain to classical music.

What is the science behind this reaction in my body? These to get together to play and I hear it but then all these goosebumps appear all over my skin from my ankles to my wrists and up my neck. What are my cells doing in my body that produces such a reaction? What is the energy there? Amazing euphoria follows and continues through the song.

incredibile!!!! He was one of my first jazz musicians I'd ever heard while in High school performing at the Montruex Jazz festival with the school band. Well, been trying to play evr since! Thanks Oscar, Eddie Harris, David Fathed Newman, and Les Mcann for inspiring me then . It was basically because of their blues playing that I could relate to all of then while dumbfounded at that time. So many notes which made me more even more curious.
