Something I learned to help with interpreting compensation:
Write an up arrow, down arrow, and equal sign next to your PaCO2 and HCO3 value. If the both arrows are facing up or down, you have compensation (full or partial depends on if your pH is within normal range). If both arrows are facing opposite directions, or you have an equals sign and an arrow, no compensation is happening.
