- "Vilniaus kalneliai" or "The Hills of Vilnius" - patriotic song of the beginning of the 20th century composed by the Lithuanian composer Jonas Žemaitis. The song was written to encourage freeing up of Vilnius from the Polish occupation which lasted from 1920 to 1939. This video was recorded during the rehearsal of "Ugniavijas" in 31st January 2022. Lithuanian and English lyrics are provided below.
Dainos žodžiai:
Aušta aušrelė, netoli diena,
Rengiasi į kovą visa Lietuva,
:Vilniaus kalneliai, sveikiname jus,
Ruoškite drąsuoliams tinkamus kapus!:
Mūsų vadai narsūs veda mus kovon,
Drauge mus palaidos žemėlėn juodon.
:Vilniaus kalneliai, sveikiname jus,
Ruoškite drąsuoliams tinkamus kapus!:
Priešo mes nebijom, nebaisi mirtis,
Karžygiui brangesnė yr garbė, šalis!
:Vilniaus kalneliai, sveikiname jus,
Ruoškite drąsuoliams tinkamus kapus!:
Šimtametės pušys čia mus apraudos,
Siūbuodamos vėjo mums dainas dainuos.
:Vilniaus kalneliai, sveikiname jus,
Ruoškite drąsuoliams tinkamus kapus!:
Čia papūtus vėjui krinta kai kada
Ant karžygio kapo sidabro rasa.
:Vilniaus kalneliai, sveikiname jus,
Ruoškite drąsuoliams tinkamus kapus!:
Aš ir tą atminsiu mirties valandoj,
Jog esu lietuvis, gimęs Lietuvoj.
:Vilniaus kalneliai, sveikiname jus,
Ruoškite drąsuoliams tinkamus kapus!:
Drąsiai broliai ženkit, būkite tvirti,
Ruoškitės į kovą - jau priešai arti.
:Vilniaus kalneliai, sveikiname jus,
Ruoškite drąsuoliams tinkamus kapus!:
English lyrics:
The sun is rising and the day is near,
The whole Lithuania is rising for the fight,
:The hills of Vilnius, we are greeting you,
Prepare the suitable graves for the courageous ones!:
Our commanders are bold, leading us to the battle,
Together we will be buried to the black earth.
:The hills of Vilnius, we are greeting you,
Prepare the suitable graves for the courageous ones!:
We are not afraid of the enemy, nor of the death,
For the knight the honor and the country are more dear!
:The hills of Vilnius, we are greeting you,
Prepare the suitable graves for the courageous ones!:
Hundred-year old pine trees will bemoan us here,
Swaying in the wind they will sing us songs.
Siūbuodamos vėjo mums dainas dainuos.
:The hills of Vilnius, we are greeting you,
Prepare the suitable graves for the courageous ones!:
Sometimes when the wind blows here,
The silver dew falls on the grave of the knight.
:The hills of Vilnius, we are greeting you,
Prepare the suitable graves for the courageous ones!:
During the hour of death I will remember
That I am Lithuanian given birth in Lithuania.
:The hills of Vilnius, we are greeting you,
Prepare the suitable graves for the courageous ones!:
March courageously, brothers, be strong,
Prepare for the battle - enemies are near!
:The hills of Vilnius, we are greeting you,
Prepare the suitable graves for the courageous ones!:

Gera Giesme! Greetings and Respect from your Broliai from 🇱🇹🇱🇻
Paldies, brali!
Greetings Ugnijavijas,
It might seem unlikely to happen, but yet a Belgian boy is learning Lithuanian right now. All that thanks to you guys. My Lithuanian is of course not very good, but I do my very best to improve it. The first song I knew from you guys was and still is my favorite Lithuanian song. It was Oi, šermuksnio, and I still know the lyrics. I can't really sing, but while singing that song my voice sounds the best if you ask me. Now, with a lot of google translate I'm even writing my very own songs. They're war songs too. They're probably full of mistakes, but I'm learning out of them. Thanks a lot for your beautiful songs. I really appreciate it. (if you want I can send some of the songs to you)
That is really nice ❤❤
I would like to say that if you decide to learn the language, folk music is probably not the best way to do that as the language may be very regional, with a specific accent and some words may be fossils of the past. However best of luck to you. Sending loads of love from Lithuania ❤
Graži daina! Myliu jūsų muziką. Aš studijuoju lietuviškai dėl jūsų dainų! Sveiki iš Ispanijos!
Could you please post the lyrics or indicate where to find them? I loved this song and I’d want to learn it. Ačiū labai :)
(Sorry if my Lithuanian is flawed, I’m still learning)
Many thanks for listening! We strive to add lyrics and their translations to our new videos, but we still need to revise the old ones. You can find one of the lyrics versions for this song below:

Six man and five beers, question: who of them don't like beer?
Several of us brew our own beer. This was a gift from one of the brewers to the others. Good observation though! ;)
Laukėm laukėm ir sulaukėm:)
Gera daina ir puikūs dainorėliai!
Ačiū labai!
Jono Žemaičio (1868- 1932) daina. O atrodo, kad parašyta šiems laikams...
Tikra tiesa.
Gera daina
Ačiū!
Nice to see you back, guys! Amazing song, i dont know why it sounds like Tetris song for me
Thanks! That is an interesting similarity :)
You are right.
It has almost an identical melody to the Tetris Theme or the russian song "Korobeiniki" which inspired the tetris theme.
Gaberis cia tau
As a Polish I fully understand that our relations after the Great War was really hard because of Żeligowski rebellion and occupying Vilnius. Piłsudski was controversial but he is one of my country national hero. I want to notice that even during rebellion people weren't hostile te each other and tried to avoid bloodshed and polish soldiers after taking captive lithuanians released them armed, with honor. But i'm not here to dispute about politics of last century. I'm glad that i found your channel on youtube and even heard one song in Polish. I want to hear you more often guys and to say you despite many different situations which had place in our history we, Polish have many respect to you, especially I have respect to you as nation, people, musicans. I really enjoy hearing you. Ačiū labai! Have a nice day!
We believe that historical grievances have been put down as we are again important allies and we share so much history together. Thank you very much for your kind words and greetings!
Polish are our brothers. Shit happens. Ruskies were occupants while we had a rocky affair with Poland- we remain brothers.
@@Tar1ffI agree. I would like to apologize for occupation of Vilnius too. Let's remember our mutual power in brotherhood- Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth 🇵🇱💪💖🇱🇹💪
@@UgniavijasOnce brotherhood, always brotherhood🇵🇱💞🇱🇹

Ačiū didelis, linkėjimai atgalios!
Greetings from your northern brothers, i really like this song even though i understand maybe like half of the words. Just the rythmic singing sounds so good!
Graži daina ir tinkama šiems laikams!
Dėkui už gražius žodžius :)
Beautiful song ! Hope I'll see you on stage one day !
Thanks! Hope to see you too :D
Šitas vienas iš mano mylimiausių :)

ar ten skanus alus?
Gardus, naminis :)
Sounds quite similar to korebeiniki, i wonder if they're related
don't sound similar at all
Beautiful as always! Keep it coming : D
Thank you! Will do!
Labai grazu!
Ačiū labai!
Žavu.
Dėkui
Kaip skambu! Šaunu!
здорово!

Gražu
Ačiū!
it feels like this melody was copied from "Korobeiniki" song
Korobeiniki's melody sounds different and is more fast-paced
I don't believe where could have been a crossover in the composers' Jonas Žemaitis life, where he could have known about a Russian imperialistic song.
That melody is from something else isn’t?
Greetings from Australia.
It is original composition of Jonas Žemaitis, although there are some similarities to other songs. Thanks!
Incredible!
Many thanks!

Ciekawe... 🎵🎶🎵🎶💖💐😃
Pagarba!
that word occupation is kinda unfair since more than 70% of Vilnius/Wilno was polish (talking population) the mistake of Both polish and lithuanian governments was not finding another solution that would please both sides polish and lithuanian governments sabotaged relations with each other for no reason and that shouldnt have happened i guess probably free city of vilnius under international administation could have been a good idea but both sides (polish and lithuanian) would have to make some sacrifices
anyways, the song is fire, and im the absolute biggest fan of your new album "Pulkun" keep the good work! Greetings from Poland
EDIT: By the way im NOT suggesting that Vilnius is a polish city, it had an overwhelming Polish majority on the beggining of 20th century but now it hasnt, and its truly Lithuanian
Occupation word is absolutely fair
@@Oberschutzee i mean if you would have asked people of Wilno/Vilnius In 1920s and 1930s they would have a diffent opinion
