Honestly, the whole bit about memory and information is what discourages me to try-hard Tekken ranked. Luckily it is intuitive enough where I can pick up some patterns of movement that all characters share, but I don't remember how to answer in the moment-- I don't know the frame data, I don't know the whole list of moves that my character can do, etc... I understand that it comes with having to drill and lab a lot to remember, but that's just not fun for me to view Tekken as that math problem.
Unfortunately that's what it takes to git gud at fighting games. People watch a hype EVO match and assume they can pick up a controller and get results with a little work, but many of them drop it because getting to a high level takes knowledge and application of that knowledge.
I think tekken movelist size is what discourages me from labbing these days. I spent ages learning how to deal with bs only to see it once a twice a month. If i played regiously every day it would probably be better, but if you only play a couple times a week it feels insurmountable.
Feel you there. Labbed the knowledge nightmare chars. Proceed to fight simple top tiers I don't struggle with all month, on an uprepped break, decide to play Tekken just to be abused because I forgot how to deal with the labbed chars. Especially Zafina being able to launch you in so many deceptive ways.
I think a better way to lab punishes is to have the dummy do a few plus frame moves, set that to 3 as your most frequent recording, then have all of your recordings for punishes do those same exact plus moves and then do the punish of your choice since your opponent in a game is not just going to stand there and do a move, they're going to add a bunch of other shit as well. So for example, I made Dragunov do fff3, then b1+2 on all the recordings but the very first recording is just these moves as the most frequent. I'll then do those same moves and have his 10, 11, etc. frame punishes, some throws, and Snake Edge on other recordings since I need better reactions. The goal for me is to make it as close to a real match as possible and not just stand center stage. Animations may be the same, but the angle will screw you up if you're not paying attention.
The animation recognition tip is super helpful! I’ve been just going slow, trying to learn a character through UA-cam guide every other day. But the tip about doing the punishes for 2 characters per session is something I’ll be stealing. Ty!
The amount of times I’ve used that small amount of time in between rounds to practice a move someone was using and the sheer satisfaction when I have instant results and I can visually watch my opponent stumble. The practice system is so complex and allows you to do so much more now too.
as a struggling red/purple rank player i found the combatting autopiloting bit very interesting & helpful. thanks phi. also super stoked to see slime on the channel 😎
Slime is so real for this! 2:28 I am new to Tekken, but I come from 2D air dasher land and I am around the same rank as slime. Playing people who use gimmicky moves I’ve never seen feels really bad because the sets never feel fun to win, but when I steamroll someone with my basic offense on Steve then it feels so shallow. Took me like 250 hours have decent games because people learned how to block…
Yesterday got TK King for the first time on my Steve. It's getting fucking hard up here. Overall feeling pretty good about my skill though. Most people say that blue ranks don't even sidestep while me here, got all the fundamentals down even though they need a lot more work. I notice that the players who really destroy me just have a lot more patience. Probably gotta focus on that currently.
I only main DJ, got him to destruction, had no real interest in other characters or played them. When hei was released i switched and playing at Fujin / blue ranks i learnt what worked and didnt work well. I think the rank system works quite well regardless of your level.
Thanks. It's so tough because people want to either explain obvious things, or "how to execute ___." There are so many things in the intermediate space. Like I know what a sidestep is but why it's not as good when I do it
seriously, though. I'm a 50/50 split of "immediately adapting and punishing in that exact moment" and "it took me 57 rounds to get me to duck that specific string"
Tekken 8 is the first tekken i tried to learn and they took my main :( Still, reaching fujin/raijin with a couple characters now, midrank tekken is such a weird experience. You get dudes that play like beginners, you get dudes that just know every mixup you put on em. Might just be bc i am kinda bad still
I've been playing since launch and only recently reached Fujin. I live in Asia and have to regularly fight Korean and Japanese players. Also I don't play a lot of Tekken, but mostly the other big 3D fighters like SC, VF, and DOA. I have very little knowledge about what moves are punishable. Also I main Steve and never really touched any other character in 8 until I tried Asuka last week. I don't know how good at this game I'm supposed to be.
You picked probably the 2 hardest characters to try and learn lol. Something you have to realize with these characters is that they are very defense oriented in a game that rewards offense. Asuka and Steve's offense is ok, but other characters are just better at it. You have to use your attacks defensively and that's a tricky concept to grasp. I'm a Steve main so I know your pain. I hope you stick with it though. This game is a lot of fun when you can see the inner workings of it all. If you have any questions feel free to ask :D
Indeed. Bryan and Mishima's I've faced in blue ranks has been a bigger struggle compared to bears and stance based characters. Their spacing were more solid and much more methodical in their gameplay. I find myself asking why is this guy only fujin? And then there's this stance based character and I ask myself, how is this guy Kishin?
Meh, I'm Fujin with 7 different characters. After I reach Fujin I stop ranking. Because after that you need alot of knowledge about how to punish properly, when to flashduck, which way to sidestep strings, how to break throws and good movement. Nah, I play videogames to relax and have fun, not to something that feels like a chore. It's way easier and more fun to just learn your own character and some cheezy strings and flowcharts and just mash away, like Tekken 8 is meant to. If they find a way to avoid it --> powercrush. And just use heat and rageart and all the other silly stuff. After blue ranks you meet people who can deal with all this, then it's not fun anymore. Fujin level is more than good enough.
I get that pulling off knowledge checks/cheese feels good, but the “deeper” fighting game past that stuff can also be really enjoyable if you commit to trying it.
You’d be surprised at how some of these players play at tekken king and above 💀 it feels like 70% of my matches are just fighting mindless players using every gimmick snd cheese move at their disposal, and then the other 30% are decent chess matches
Nah, even if you take out the ranks where you literally can't lose points blue is still not intermediate. If I were to divide ranks I'd say it goes beginner (up to green), amateur (up to orange) , intermediate (up to purple), advanced (up to blue), expert (up to golden) and then pretty much pro (GOD). In blue ranks you definitely have to be at least decent against every character, know your character really well, know the basics well
@@Walamonga1313 It's not so easy to say. Blue rank now is very mixed. Some players make me wonder how they go that far with how they play. I've made to Tekken King with Lars but I been playing since Tekken 2.

I made it to Kishin once after switching to arcade stick; don;t get me wrong I love this game, I just have to watch Phil everyday if I stand even remotely of a chance to see it again :')
Holy...Phi thank you, you have been such a key part of why I want to compete in this game. And this video meets me just where I am at, Hardstuck bushin player. This helps putting things into perspective and cut my self some slack because Tekken's a hard a game afterall
So I have a bit of issue with this and its just the nature of the game, but I'm new to fighting games competitively without playing with my friends so never cared, but they say T8 is good for casuals, but only to a certain point because then you get this. He's blue ranks, but I'm hard stuck in red and its like yea you can play casually and its "good" for new players to join in, but then you get "oh you won't be good for 2 years" , "its like a real martial art", "you won't be 'decent' til next Tekken game" and as a casual/new player its like is the game really good for people like me? If I pick this game up and I'll never be remotely good for what seems like years or just constantly being destroyed by stuff at red ranks like where is the casual gameplay at? How is this good for casuals and new players? Seems like tekken is a game that if you weren't around for the beginning you might as well get out. I feel like with other FGs its not like that or at least I don't hear that considering Tekken is labeled as the hardest fighting game.
It takes years If you're trying learning the game just by ranked matches, if you are playing an easy character you can reach fujin in 2 weeks by just using replay feature and Punish drills
So you think the game isn't really for casuals? But you're frustrated you can't rank up? Casual friendly games don't mean you're guaranteed wins. I don't think you're as casual as you think you are. If you want to win more, get better. This isn't a game you're gonna get good at overnight. You have to dedicate some time and effort if you want to get good. If that's not the kind of game for you play against the cpu
Maybe its just me but Kishin/Bushin seems like a little too high of a bar to label as intermediate level. Great video again and insightful stuff again!
I think intermediate in Tekken is a huge range Many Kishin/Bushin players do not know: • their character's frames • their character's stances • proper combo routes • adjusting for the wall This is not shade at those players; it's more that advanced Tekken is imo where most players understand *at least* their character, even if they don't know every matchup.
"Advanced" really starts at "Tekken King" i would say. Kishin/Bushin is pretty much still considered intermediate level but i can understand why some would consider it advanced.
@@PhiDX Fairs, your are obv much more qualified to give an overview about where the skillsets of players in those ranks are in relation to the highest level. Keep up the great content! I agree that leveling up from intermediate to more advanced play is probably the hardest evolution for most Tekken players.
I know these kinds of videos about intermediate level stuff is better for youtube content, but is there any chance of you making videos for higher level concepts like offense/defense timings, neutral movement/blocking options, etc.? Appreciate this vid tho of course

16:58 lol this is exactly how i play i have an extremely strong offense barely defense i know how to stop most of my own options there for when the opponent shows they know aswell i go for a mix
what is your recommendation practice against aggressive oki trap? i felt in the intermediate ranks most of the people try to aggressively 50/50 you on oki. if i try stand up they low swipe and sometime when i duck they mid attack launcher so stuck in combo/fall on ground loop
@@jk2l what Phi said, but also look at what got you there in the first place. Oki is not a favorable position to be in, and no amount of skill will change that. (Though there are things you can do to make it hurt less, like staying on the ground) What skill WILL get you however, is the chance to avoid that scenario entirely by not getting launched. We all make mistakes, but focusing on the outcome of bad mistakes is worse than focusing on the mistakes itself. "Don't cry over spilled milk" right?
Maybe I do it the hard but I never lab I play Leo and memorize my punishes for different frames and I'll spend basically the first 2 rounds or even first whole game mostly just blocking and picking my right time to test a punish then second game I'll punish and frame trap before eventually moving on to stance mix ups because in my mind it's up to my opponent for what I need to punish what are their habits I need to adapt to but to be fair my way of playing is only really do able if you can fuzzy guard other wise you lose to three interactions and don't know wtf happened
I play like that too, and personally, I think it comes down to my experience with Tekken 7. The more defense oriented playstyle really rewarded you in those interactions. However, one thing I've come to realize is that being forced to fuzzy duck means you made a mistake somewhere along the way. It's not a favorable position to be in, and no amount of skill will alleviate that. You have to be more proactive with your defense which is a really hard concept to grasp. I think it adds more depth to the game, but also makes it harder to get right, which is tough.
Blue ranks hurt my head man, so many people feel like they are GoD alts. or a mashing maniac that isnt even looking at your character. It can be frustrating to try and adjust against wildly different play styles that are both probably more effective than what youre doing at the time.
5:00 To be able to remember the move to punish I just keep practicing the same move to punish like 30-50 times a day for about like a week then it becomes muscle memory when you run into a player using that move.
@@kyx5631 do this with characters your having problems punishing with and if your having problems punishing all characters then yes if lucky early 2028
One huge trap I'm constantly falling is trying to do what I think is like good or advanced stuff, which is really just me going for a set up or playing within frames, but that ain't how it works in low/intermediate ranks, I am not that guy, and my opponent doesn't even care what the mix is
Love how he says he is "Melee" player and think he knows anything about fighting games. "Melee" as much a fighting game as Mario Kart is a racing simulator.
in case you missed it, apart from the comment on where your eyes are at, he was talking about the competitive environment, not just about the game itself
in 2017 I only had old Aris stream clips and google docs to figure this stuff out T8 players have it good with content like this out there. Thanks for the content as always Phi!
if you are new, don't forget - you can block lows by just holding DOWN!!!! you don't need to hold db or df to block the low just press down!!!! this lesson took me 400hr and i got blown up constantly tryinf to hold db on a ps5 dpad. doesn't always register right. next thing to learn is the wake up option that let's you jump up. i heard you 'hold forward' and i do but i roll forward so still unsure but i bet in 500hr i'll get there.
Bro dont. That's just building bad habit. Especially with some strings that are duckable, youd want to do db otherwise youll be jailed and wont be able to duck by holding down. In regards to wakeup option, if you're grounded and press forward, that's a forward roll. If you can techroll but choose to hold forward, it becomes a quick getup. Thats the preferred one if you don't want to deal with 50/50 okis from knockdown in open space. Ex: kazuya 112, then they wavedash to setup a 50/50.

@@PhiDX Fairs, your are obv much more qualified to give an overview about where the skillsets of players in those ranks are in relation to the highest level.
Keep up the great content! I agree that leveling up from intermediate to more advanced play is probably the hardest evolution for most Tekken players.
What do i do if there are no tips on my replays? sure i can see I'm in minus frames but idk how im getting in these situations
I know these kinds of videos about intermediate level stuff is better for youtube content, but is there any chance of you making videos for higher level concepts like offense/defense timings, neutral movement/blocking options, etc.? Appreciate this vid tho of course
Every pro analysis video I do targets what you're asking about!
@@PhiDXoh ok my b, I will check those out then
Still though (just as a genuine suggestion) would be cool to see this same coaching/q&a/problem solving process regarding those topics I mentioned. Obviously not really in your control since you'd have to have someone approach you about it, but figured I'd say it anyway. Thanks man
Beautiful video. Love watching these. Helps me learn from a different perspective and is just nice seeing someone like Slime taking such interest
Can you share the link to the website with the frame data
THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED 🙏🙏🙏
stuck on Kishin for 2 months now. everytime I'm closing in to bushin. There's that HoeRang HIYYYAAAing me back
Wait, according to thumbnail, Kishin is intermediate?
Cries in warrior tears...
What was the website at 6:40
i just feel lost dude, xiayou, yoshimitsu, dragunov. these 3 chars feel like they take 5 years of tekken to slightly deal with them.
bryan player here just hit kishin today first time i only play customs because tekken at my rank feels so hard i play on discord a lot against god of destructions and tekken gods and do fairly well i take a good amount of sets so i don’t get it sometimes perfect video
16:58 lol this is exactly how i play i have an extremely strong offense barely defense i know how to stop most of my own options there for when the opponent shows they know aswell i go for a mix
lol he said what i just said 5 min later !
This is where most people give up. i was hard stuck raijin with steve but im back again
This is such a good video. I value Slime's perspective as a longtime competitive melee player.
I remember when ludwig was slime's friend. God I'm getting old.
Commonly known as Ludwig's friend is wild 😂
excellent advise i think
what is your recommendation practice against aggressive oki trap? i felt in the intermediate ranks most of the people try to aggressively 50/50 you on oki. if i try stand up they low swipe and sometime when i duck they mid attack launcher so stuck in combo/fall on ground loop
Stay down a little longer!
@@jk2l what Phi said, but also look at what got you there in the first place. Oki is not a favorable position to be in, and no amount of skill will change that. (Though there are things you can do to make it hurt less, like staying on the ground)
What skill WILL get you however, is the chance to avoid that scenario entirely by not getting launched.
This is what happen when you play a rare character
Nice video. 😎
High string that’s unsafe Mishimas- 1,2,2
Blue ranks hurt my head man, so many people feel like they are GoD alts. or a mashing maniac that isnt even looking at your character. It can be frustrating to try and adjust against wildly different play styles that are both probably more effective than what youre doing at the time.
5:00 To be able to remember the move to punish I just keep practicing the same move to punish like 30-50 times a day for about like a week then it becomes muscle memory when you run into a player using that move.
Mate, a full week for a single move? When do you intend to be done with punish training for all characters, 2027?
@@kyx5631 do this with characters your having problems punishing with and if your having problems punishing all characters then yes if lucky early 2028
This was good.
I'm so sick of players using the same couple spam gimmicks for their character
1:48 this guy
Blue ranks are intermediate?? I'm cooked
🔥🔥🔥
Phi post i watch
Lmao imagine being known as "Ludwig's friend"
One huge trap I'm constantly falling is trying to do what I think is like good or advanced stuff, which is really just me going for a set up or playing within frames, but that ain't how it works in low/intermediate ranks, I am not that guy, and my opponent doesn't even care what the mix is
The very last part is funny, because I just won against someone by doing only lows for an entire round. Sometimes, doing what works is all it takes.
PhiDX Tekken content and Slime Tekken content are my favorite two kinds of Tekken content
BOBR
Love how he says he is "Melee" player and think he knows anything about fighting games. "Melee" as much a fighting game as Mario Kart is a racing simulator.
He is so far from fighting games, lol. "Watch other character, not yourself", no shit, Sherlock. But at least he is now learning at least.
in case you missed it, apart from the comment on where your eyes are at, he was talking about the competitive environment, not just about the game itself
in 2017 I only had old Aris stream clips and google docs to figure this stuff out T8 players have it good with content like this out there.
Thanks for the content as always Phi!
I need this so bad rn

if you are new, don't forget - you can block lows by just holding DOWN!!!! you don't need to hold db or df to block the low just press down!!!!
this lesson took me 400hr and i got blown up constantly tryinf to hold db on a ps5 dpad. doesn't always register right.
next thing to learn is the wake up option that let's you jump up. i heard you 'hold forward' and i do but i roll forward so still unsure but i bet in 500hr i'll get there.
No sometimes you can't. Db is the safest way to block lows
@@murriellearenas4663 what? i labbed it and it seems to block lows well.
on the get up thing i still don't understand, how do i techroll? is that like pressing 3 after getting giant swung or something?
I am confusion.....turns out not so much 🙏
W vid
Leaving a comment for Phi
It’s illegal how early I am
