Hyperion is currently competing with HOKA Cielo and Saucony Sinister at the moment. Both these shoes are offering PEBA based foams so they are likely to have better energy return. However, I would choose a discounted Hyperion Tempo over the new Hyperion at the moment. In the USA, Hyperion Tempo can be found at less than $100. That said, a couple weeks ago at a major store sale, I was able to get a pair of Hyperion Max for $102 (limited colorways). Very happy with that!
Brooks Hyperion was actually a shoe released by Brooks back in... 2016 I think. It was a firm, low stack, high drop, traditional road racing shoe that still uses Brooks' BioMogo foam (basically firm EVA). It was good for a fast 5k race, or 10k if you want to torture yourself. Everyone seems to forget that shoe, and thought that the "hyperion" lineup was started by the hyperion tempo in 2019/2020. Well it seems like Brooks also wants us to forget that OG Hyperion by releasing this shoe without named it as a "version 2" or something. Probably because the OG Hyperion wasn't very successful on the market at the time 😅.
I remember that. I almost bought that original Hyperion by accident when I was looking for Hyperion Tempo a few years ago. They were so much cheaper as Brooks were clearing the stock of them. Yes, it was a racing flat type of shoe.
Funny thing is i got the hyperion tempo 3 weeks ago and man the are the best par i have right now , so nice to run in them i was suprised that the where that nice to run in. When i will change out a par of shoes next i will look for another par of Brooks for sure , maybe this par that you did try. 😁
The Hyperion tempo was my favourite brooks shoe (In my opinion their best shoe). I may revisit it and buy another pair. I don’t love running in high stack shoes so thank god for some of these medium to lower stack great offerings.
Will be starting my first ever marathon prep in October and needed a shoe for that. I have the Speed 3 and Glycerin 20 in my rotation, but both are not really an option (too soft after 15 to 18km and too heavy) for the long runs (with intervals) that I will be doing and was thinking about both the Hyperion and the Max (also based on your videos). I bought the Hyperion Max and watching this video, I think I made the right decision. Will be doing a first testrun on them next weekend.
Thanks for the shout out. I was wondering what the difference between this one and the original Hyperion Tempo is given it effectively is the Tempo 2. You seemed to imply it fits a bit narrower? Some of your shots make it actually look quite wide but equally the laces are very loose. That (being fairly wide) was largely why did not get on with the Tempo as well as you. That said I do think a shoe like this (or the Adios 8 that you mentioned I have got) is ideal for sessions like this on firm trails when being more "connected" to the ground is not only helpful but you don't really need the more substanstial cushion of a carbon racer. That said the Adios 8 works well on the road if prefer less stack and I have found a great option when want to do a bit of both. 22-14 mm stack you mentioned in another comment is pretty low these days and even makes it track race legal whereas the Adios 8 isn't (think about 28-18 mm). How much heavier is the Max? This Hyperion and the Adios 8 are well very similar for us - about 280g. In a way having this and the Max (if it is only 3mm higher did I hear) seems a little odd. Is there any case for both? At least these are offered in our size unlike the increasingly odd Hyperion Elite in this day and age. Have Brooks given up there as must now be the only major brand to have no compelling out and out race day option and yet they have 2 lightweight racer/trainers.
Well either I’ve measured the MAX wrong or I’ve typed it in the video wrong but my video says 270g for the max and 278g for these… so the max is lighter? Best double check that when I get home! I do enjoy these type of shoes for these workouts as you say… they harden the legs up a bit and save the magic for race day when you slip on a plated shoe!
Question: when you do your “90 second recovery”. Does that mean, jogging, walking, standing or something else? Also, same question for cool down. I am newer to running and am not clear with some of the terms.
I am a big fan of Brooks. Been wearing their shoes for quite a while. Is this a 5K / 10K race shoe? If you were running a key race, would this be on your list? I just switched from the Adrenalines as my daily trainer to the Glycerins, and it is amazing how much better the foam is in the Glycerins. Definitely shave off about 30 seconds off my zone 2 mile pace. For my speed sessions and race day, I wear the Saucony Pro 2, which I absolutely love. Loved the feedback and I'll have to consider adding these shoes in as a potential speed day shoe.
Hi Andy, I don't think you can get passed the Takumi Sen 8 or 9. Especially as wiggle had the sen 9 in a selected colourway for £68 this week. Seen the Takumi Sen 9 regularly below the £100 mark. The Sen 8 is probably my favourite speed shoe!
Hi there like you I was a massive fan of the original Hyperion tempo. And need to replace my third pair now . I mainly used them for the track and 5mile tempo sessions. My question is which of the new ones Max or hyperion would you choose for that purpose?
I think if I’m honest, I’d choose the max… they’ve got a bigger range. These are great for shorter distance work but the max are more comfy and can do so much more!
Thanks for the review, I currently have a fresh pair of the liberate nitro which looks to fit the same slot in my rotation (as you indicated) , however as it looks to have a more comfortable toe box, when I am done with the liberate and have the 300miles in them then this could be a viable replacement. PS; I am loving the MAX too , it has really brought into question the need for squish foam and plates (from a hobby jogger's perspective).
Yeah the nitro definitely serves the same purpose, both similar shoes! Glad you're enjoying the MAX as well... I am definitely leaning more towards firmer midsoles these days too!
Good morning. Thanks for this information about the new Hyperion. Another comparison: Brooks hyperion - Kinvara 14, what do you think?. Like to Andy. Have a great day.
Thanks for the review, since the original hyperion tempo is on discount, do you feel like there is enough update on this one to take it over the previous one ? Or do they basically perform and feel the same ?
The tempo is more similar to the MAX... they have more stack height that this one... I would actually have a rotation that contained EITHER the tempo and this hyperion OR the Max and this hyperion, they both serve different purposes for me. My advise is grab a tempo on discount to see if you like the foam or not! If you do, this is a great speed day option!
@@TheFODRunner Thanks for the reply I already went trough several pairs of Hyperion tempo and recently bought the Max. So I am happy to hear the new one is lower stack, it will be perfect for faster intervals without overlapping the max usage.
Would prefer the Brooks to Adidas just because Adidas sizing can be very hit and miss at least with Brooks and having the Tempo a size 9 would suite me fine, I can’t always say that about Adidas though. And talking about ugly come on those ASICS Tri Noosa colour schemes take the biscuit for being Fugly 🤣🤣🤣
CONFIRMED STACKHEIGHT: 22MM > 14MM - Confirmed By Brooks! Lower than I thought!
They only share the amount of foam for some reason.. the total stack is around 30-22 as you said
When the shoe came through I immediately thought of you 😂 great vid as always
Haha thanks mate, cant get enough of this DNA Flash stuff!

I remember this! I had the hyperion in 2016/2017 and didn't like it. It was way too narrow for me. I think I only put 7 miles on it.
Ah I did not know this!

Brooks even made it in the fod colors
Absolutely!

Yes, hyperion max for marathon training 👍

The sen 9 is pretty special isn’t it!!
How do you find this to the Adidas Takumi Sen 8 or 9? I love the TS8 but they give me horrendous blisters so I can't wear them!

Can't go wrong with the hyperion lineup!

with some Hyperion tempos still out there on sale, would you just suggest getting a pair of those?
Absolutely, they are a bargain right now!
Good morning. Thanks for this information about the new Hyperion. Another comparison: Brooks hyperion - Kinvara 14, what do you think?. Like to Andy. Have a great day.
I haven’t tried the latest kinvara but I didn’t like version 10 when I tried it! So I’d choose brook hyperion!

Ah no! Sorry to hear that!

"Promosm" 🍀
My god is it ugly.
😂
it should last over 300 miles now that they added some rubber. I think they will last longer than the MAX?
