If you ever decide to clean the grounds, shove a rag in the flywheel inspection hole first. I dropped a nut inside and had to pull the whole bell housing off to find it. 🤪
Brings back memories of my $931$ lol. Keep a spare relay in the glove box. The DME is way more reliable than people think so always verify all other potential sources of problems before you point your finger at that beautiful little black box. Diagnosis should be easier on yours than the 931. Imagine adding in the extra ciruitry and gizmos for a turbocharger with all its fuel enrichment stuff, kaboom prevention measure and all of that. Lol. Does the NA 944 have the second fuel (scavenger) pump inside the tank? I forget. That was a common culprit for symptoms similar to yours.
With my '84 944 NA, I've learned to always keep a spare DME relay in the glove box at all times for situations such as this. Fortunately, my original one has never conked out on me. But it's good to know back up is only inches away whenever you need it! :) I'm currently fixing window switches on mine, but you should definitely check out Rennlist or Pelican Parts. Those forums have been most helpful in diagnosing my problems, they might even save you some $$$ in the future! Best of luck, Karl
I had a 190E. Similar failures. Hard hot-starts, some loss of fuelling at high load or RPM's. Stupid relay, much like this one. I will give it to the Germans. They replicate common flaws across many manufacturers via common-use systems. And they do it so well.
If you had the relay apart, did you clean the points? Another thing to check is your flywheel pickups, as they go bad, or pick up bits of metal; there are videos on that, or check on Clark's garage.com. Also check all the fuse contacts are clean and tight. Good idea to run some gas cleaner into the tank.
Well, I did find it, and got it out, and even fixed it (resolder and test with 12v and my trusty Simpson 314.) But putting it back in place is impossible. How did you do it??
I was about to comment on how terrible your soldering iron looks, then you did it for me. Sorry the relay didn't fix it, my mechanic back home just bought an 85 944 for his personal car and if you want to talk to him I can give you his number
Alright, pretty good info but ... why did you not at least show which of the five (or so) relays is the DME, or at least show it with the cover on so we can identify it????? I pulled on mine and none want to come loose from their mount. One is missing. Sigh. And of course the 1984 944 does not start.
