My grandma had the wine dots when I was a child in Oklahoma. They were free range, and lay exlarge eggs.
Grandma was true believe that you only keep a flue chicken in the winter just enough to feed her family. The rest
We’re harvested and caned for the winter!

Awesome VLOG! You provide outstanding education on these heritage breeds! Can’t wait to hear more on the other breeds as well. I find myself repeatedly saying “Appenzeller Spitzhauben “ out loud! LOL! I may get strange looks today. Also love the Silver Laced Wyandotte’s! This world is fortunate to have people like you, who invest in raising Heritage Poultry!

Your roo is such a little love, you weren't kidding about how calm they are! He seems to be thoroughly enjoying the attention (especially the wattle rubs!)

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your video. I learned a lot and appreciate all the work you are doing to preserve this wonderful breed. I purchased hatching eggs from a poultry farm in Atlantic Canada (PEI), where like you, they are breeding with the goal of getting to the European SOP. I can't wait to see how my chicks turn out, they are only three weeks old at the moment. I love the SS Hamburg so naturally, when I saw the SS Appenzeller Spitzhauben, I was determined to find a breeder and thankfully didn't have to go too far.

I've just bought an Appenzeller. She was so nervous when we got got her home. I should have bought 2. The vendor lacked basic social skills and only told me this when I went to collect her.

I share your pain. I have two hens one about 4 month’s, and one about 5 months. They are extremely flighty, but once you catch them they are calm. I handle them everyday , but progress on the calm front is very slow.

I hope you don’t breed out their utility. That’s been an issue with pure breeding. Too much focus on just color and shape and not heartiness and egg/meat production.
