What Is The Highest Possible Number of Views a YouTube Video Can Get?

- What is the highest possible number of views UA-cam can count on a single video?
If you’re a relatively small channel, you’ll probably be happy to get a thousand, maybe even a couple of thousands of views on a video you post. More successful channels can hope for tens of thousands, possibly even hundreds of thousands of views for the right video in the right moment. UA-cam giants like PewDiePie, Vsauce, Game Theorists and others are known for generating several millions of views with a single video. Only a handful of videos on this platform have managed to enter the famous one billion club, and as of now, that’s pretty much the roof when it comes to views on UA-cam.
But what we’re interested in is the number of views you would have to get on a single video, before the UA-cam view counter would basically break!
The highest number of views that UA-cam can count on a single video is 9,223,372,036,854,775,808.
As you may know, Gangnam Style, by the South Korean musician Psy, was the first UA-cam video to ever reach one billion views, which happened on December 21st 2012. The success of the song had such a huge impact that UA-cam representatives themselves made a Google Plus post in which they stated how the platforms own view counter had to be upgraded, just because of it!
According to the same post, before Gangnam Style, UA-cam counted views using a 32-bit integer, which guaranteed a maximum of 2,147,483,647 views. Because of the success the song had, they had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer that allows a number of views that takes effort to just say - 9,223,372,036,854,775,808.

Two years ago and it would've been 301
Smosh wouldve broken that in 2005 with 25 mil views on one vid
Ljbo Bott they didnt really blow up until 08 or 09
I highly doubt youtube even had 25 million people on the site back then let along on one video.
I miss the 301 club...
Kyle the Reflectionist same
I'm afraid that if I would upload a video it would get this many views and break UA-cam.
dumbass LMAOOO
xD
Put your worries to rest, for you'd probably get around 0 views a day.
well if it was greater than that number it would overflow and go back to zero en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integer_overflow
Hm. That would kinda suck. Imagine if you took the internet by storm and amassed enough views to overflow the integer... only to find that it becomes the joint least viewed video of all time!
(.... theoretically speaking anyway)
we might not get that many views, but we will get that many dislikes for youtube rewind 2018.

UA-cam staff after seeing this video: *nervous sweating*
The maximum value is 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 the reason for that is because in programming this is the maximum value of a 64-bit signed Integer (A number that doesn't have a decimal). Signed means that the value can be positive or negative. A 64-bit Integer is referred to as a Long in programming. This is currently the highest value an integer can go as of this date. (Without using unsigned) The value you gave as the largest has an 8 at the end when its actually 7, the 8 you gave is the minimum value of the 64-bit signed Integer which has a negative range of -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 whereas the positive range has a range of 9,223,372,036,854,775,807.
There are other ways of producing larger numbers as well. UA-cam for example could use an unsigned 64-bit integer which has a range of 18,446,744,073,709,551,615. Which is practical for a view counter because views can never be negative (unsigned does not allow for negative numbers).
If you're curious why unsigned numbers are larger than signed, that's because unsigned values don't have negative values so you can take the minimum value of the signed number, remove the negative sign and add it to the maximum value of the signed value.
Minimum value of a 64-bit signed integer, taking away the negative sign (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)
Maximum value of the 64-bit signed integer
(9,223,372,036,854,775,807).
If you were to add these two numbers up on a calculate its so large the number would be displayed in scientific notation. 1.8446744e+19
If you converted scientific notation you would lose some precision but if you do this by hand you would get.
9,223,372,036,854,775,808 + 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,615
Even if you had to produce an even larger number one could use a solution like in Java called BigInteger which has an almost infinite size, because the class allocates as much memory as it needs to create the extremely large value but the number can be only as big as the available memory you have dedicated to it. Eventually you may see a standard for something like this or even a 128-bit Integer as time goes on as we seen 32-bit integers weren't long enough so we had to come up with 64-bit ones.
The 32, 64, and 128 bit comes from the base - 2 number system in mathematics this also called binary in digital electronics. Base 2 is used in computers because base 2 consists of 2 numbers. (0's and 1's) 1 represents an electrical signal (true in boolean terms) whereas 0 doesn't (false in boolean terms)
I have a comment in which I discuss this topic. I believe you could constructively add to it...
we used 32 bit for a long time, but as for now - people are stopping to use 32 bit computers and apps, that's because most of the stuff today can't handle only 32 bit, but just for the people who don't understand the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit is pretty much the difference between
2 to the power of 31
and 2 to the power of 63
once you get to the 32 bit, you still multiply it by 2 for another 30ish times. not sure we will get to that number some day ::P
I DONT UNDERSTAND
Should've paid attention in high school
***** try playing minecraft on 32bit, you won't make it :P anyway the difference between 32 and 64 is so big, I don't think we are ever going to need a 128
whaaaaaaaat
Regarding the comments on the number 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 (Don't bother trying to read it :D)
I see some people are commenting on the accuracy of the number, and while a decent amount of those comments are constructive and come from an educated point of view, others are purely misleading, to say the least.
In any case, in the following lines I will try to clear up the most common uncertainties...
1. The youtube view counting system is based on a signed 64-bit integer, and that is the reason why it's significantly smaller than an unsigned 64-bit integer (in an signed integer, the leftmost bit denotes whether the value is positive or negative).
2. This video talks about the number of views that are possible on youtube, not about values that particular integers can hold. As we will see later, the two don't necessarily have to appear identical. This is very important to note before we tackle the next ''issues''...
3. Yes, the highest possible positive value of a signed 64-bit integer is 9,223,372,036,854,775,807, but UA-cam has mentioned the number 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 on more occasions.
UA-cam talks about the highest possible number of views their counter can show, not the highest positive value of a signed 64-bit integer! Even though it is possible that they made a simple mistake by mentioning the number 9,223,372,036,854,775,808, to me it seems very unlikely that they would repeat the mistake on several different occasions.
4. So, how can they be right? Well, programming wise, they could have done it in this or that way. And in reality we will never know. The only thing we could know for sure is whether they made an error in their statement or not, and that's if they simply tell us.
But one possible explanation would be the use of arrays. An array is a collection of values, organized in a specific order, that are counted not from 1 but from zero.
This would seem efficient since UA-cam uses a signed 64-bit integer where 0 has a positive value.
To try to put it as simple as possible: Every time a user clicks on a video, their ID fills in a slot. First viewer's ID fills in slot 0 (zero), and the counter shows 1 view. And so on. If the array is empty, the view counter shows 0.
With all that said, I encourage you to add to the conversation in an constructive way!

So the number in question is 9,223,372,036,854,775,808. That is the highest possible number of views that UA-cam can count on a single video! UA-cam generates about 4.950 billion views per day. Now, say a video you posted generated that many daily views, it would take over 5 million years for it to push the UA-cam view counter to it's high limit. But, let's see how many daily views you would need to get there a bit quicker...
Good video. Add annotations comparing to cosmological units?

oops sorry i about the false fact. there was a video stating there was 8 billion people in the world sorry
No problem bro, it's hard to count them all accurately, there's just so many of us :)
What exactly would happen if it gets more views than that?
If you had 7.6 billion people watching a video a 1 second video at 2x speed, they could watch one in 0.5 seconds. By refreshing every second, they could get up to 2.9e17 views in a single year, and by reaching the max, it would take 319 years to reach the max. So unless we somehow get to a ridiculous human population of one trillion, it's probably never happen, even with bots.

why not refresh every 0.5 seconds?

+fernanda esparza Me too! Maybe that type of connection already exists between two(or millions) of civilizations out their. It's truly mind-boggling to think about it.
Sometimes I think that they could acces to Internet, many years after humanity disapears
The number they show at 1:08 is the exact value of 2**63. This is something deep. It also makes us understand how two views will be considered different. If you read the number of distinct IPV4 addresses they will be 2**32. This means if we watch a single video with every possible IP address, then we will reach the limit of views. But the number of views possible is almost the square of no of IPV4 addresses. That means we will use IP addresses of length more than or equal to 63(when we talk about length, it is in bits). The last 63 bits will distinguish between all the IPV6 addresses which are of length 128. The initial 65 bits won't be taken into consideration because it will take a long long time for that many amount of devices to be made.
How about uploading a 2 second video and making a second account and just play it over and over again?
i'm gonna refresh this video nine sexabillion, two hundred and twenty three quintillion, three hundred and seventy two quadrillion, therty six trillion, eight hundred and fifty four billion, seven hundred and seventy five million eight hundred and eight times. ;)

after seeing the number on the screen i guess yt used long (integer type , only natural number such as {1,2,3,4,etc}) as variable count for views since its range is -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808
Should've used the 36-bit integer, which unsigned, is 68,719,476,736, while the signed is 34,359,738,368. Which has much less numbers and faster to reach.

"long scale". It was used in English as well.
Just in the US, they thought that it was too complicated, so they ... basically cut the 1000 - steps.
The UK adopted that system eventually.
Other languages still use long scale.
And it is tbh way more logical ... mathematically speaking.
dutch, french, german, just to name a few, kept the long scale counting system
Oh I didn't know that. Thanks.
that calculation wont work cuz if every1 in the world refresh youtube at the same time it would go offline like ddos?
+latitude_ 55 It's a hypothetical situation that depicts the unbelievable scale of possible views. Obviously every element of this scenario is, to say the least, hardly doable :P
what is the highest possible views you can get legit? what is achiveble?
do you even know what DDoS means?
Lcast15 yeah but if everyone currently on youtube refreshes their page it would freeze the page for around 5 seconds, a real ddos attack is constant traffic for as long as a few days
Lcast15 using a single 3k booter can get a site down, so i guess only the power is the important bit
entire humanity multiplied by the number of seconds of their life = number of displays for one second of the video
holy crap I just realized when gunmanStyle hits 7.6 billion views that will be history in maybe 2050 or less

Krizis no ninety nine quintillion not quadrillion
basically 9.223372e+15
Donald Trump amounts....
Since first number is legit as long as they've been using signed 32bit integer(no idea why either), the second number is of course misleading since maximum value of singed integer cannot be even. It is 807.
+Gawhyr Ghun Yeah, I know UA-cam mentioned the number that ends with 808 more times. I was wondering what are the possibilities that they didn't correct the info they gave out. While it is possible they made a mistake, I was talking to a programmer the other day and he said that there is a possibility that they start from 0 (zero) instead of one, and get to 808 in that way. That is they are using something like arrays...
Hmmmm Good point tho.
if they started with 0, it would end in 806 though, not 808
Max Roderbourg If it started with 0, it would end in 807. Do not comment unless you understand what you're talking about.
Gawhyr Ghun I do know what I'm talking about, just misunderstood what chm tech was saying. I reread it and you are right, there was no need for that second part of your comment though.
*view counter* I bet no one can break me
*gangnam style* hold my beer...
I'm just gonna keep replaying for no reason....
3:31 "ugh too much math" -clicks off-
Well somehow you're still here commenting on the vid
true dat, yo.
That's why "clicked off" is crossed out.
It didn't happen.
Einar Hjörleifsson Right, but he had *just recently* changed it to clicks off.
It had been clicks off.
nice name btw.
pfft i get that many views a week its not hard jeez
tell me your secrets
Lyndon Choong bickclait
+rodli haha
I find that slightly hard to believe considering as you only have 42 subscribers...
Perhaps i am. I was simply questioning your earlier statement. Please, there is no need to get so twitchy about this sort of thing
UA-cam sometimes removes views if a video gains millions on views very quickly. So thats another problem
When each person using 2 systems at the same time. We can break in 19.5 years, or when using 4 systems, 9.75 years.
Great video!Keep up the good work!
+Gergő K thank you
Its on the thumnail
Good observation, you should be a detective.
this one cracked me up
Gosh 😂😂😆
Top 10 smartest people ever:
If everyone on Earth had 300 devices with 300 distinct accounts (though its impossible to do irl unless ur rich),and watched a short video lasting 5 secs in the exact same time, never quit for an infinite amount of time, and have the loop option on...
There is a possibility that that video will reach the limit by 1-2 decades.
I feel like octillion is a bigger number than trillion
i think it is
what is the highest possible number of likes and dislikes on youtube?
The infinite warefare trailor probably caused them to update to a 32 or 64-but

+Raian Levy Thank you Raian. I guess people these days prefer more drama XD
THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN GET 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 VIEWS ON A VID. ON THE PLANET ARE LIKE 8,000,000,000 (CLOSE TO 8,000,000,000) SO I WILL SAY THAT THIS IS FAKE :\. THERE ARE 8,000,000,000 PEOPLE ON THE PLANET RIGHT?? :\
dude, he just said that is the biggest number, not that this or any other video for that matter will hit that number of views anytime soon...
WELL I SAID THAT "THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN GET 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 VIEWS ON A VID". AND IT'S PROBLABLY IMPOSIBLE IDK
AND I THINK YOU LIKE THE WORD "DUUUUDE". Look at this diuuud
but you didnt mention how long the video would be?
i didnt see anyone post this before but due to youtube having to count 0 Views as the first number in the 64-bit limit the one's part should be 807 but maybe im wrong
If you could figure out how to give negative views then you could just un-watch a video with no views and underflow the counter!
there are only 7 people on Earth....
Sure
And all of them liked your comment.
the one and only 1 Euro. MOM! I AM FAMOUS!
Wow nice job!
no, rihanna is the only girl in the world
