  • We sent an undercover investigator with a hidden camera into every pet store in Virginia we could find that sells puppies…and found widespread deception, omissions and cover-ups -- all designed to dupe the public into buying expensive puppies from mills that treat dogs deplorably.

      +The Humane Society of the United States i know a friend that has a yorkshire terrier and since it was a year old they never stopped breeding her and then selling the puppies off, but there should be a law that one dog shouldnt breed after they have puppies in the same year. couldnt that harm the dog if she kept on breeding
      i think its disgusting, its better of giving a dog a home from a pound then buying a pup from a petshop, breeder because you wouldnt know if it was sick or not

      Vanna Rocha one reason that they don't stop it is the money, you can get a lot of it for certain breeds. I'm NOT saying I agree with this horrible industry but was just trying to explain a little of why it's done. You are right about stopping it though, and as soon as possible.

    In the UK, most pet stores do not actually sell dogs and cats because doing so encourages over breeding. I was surprised when i found out you can simply go into a pet store in the US and buy a dog. A business will treat everything as a means of getting profit.

    I hate pet stores like this, especially ones located in malls where people can compulsively buy animals that they are not prepared for or experienced enough to own, and when the puppies or kittens they've purchased outgrow their cute years they throw them away

    I work at a petstore, and I am proud to say that we don't sell puppies. Instead we have a pound puppies reduce come bring in puppies that have been abandoned. They bring photos and stories of where the puppies come from, and it brings in just as many customers as a cute puppy in the window. We get plenty of sales from the food, toys, and accessories nessecary for a new puppy without having to sell puppy mill dogs. My store(there is a handful of us) actually convinced the owner to have us not sell any animals anymore. No fish, reptiles, birds or small mammals. We are a pro adoption petstore. For non-fuzzy animals. there's an adoption truck from our county's shelter that has all sorts of animals. It's air conditioned and they park out front and people can get on and look at the animals. It's really fun to go and play with them on your break. I'm waiting for them to bring by a hermit crab because I really want another.

    I know theres always 'adopt dont shop' but if you REALLY want a puppy for the first time (like me, i waited, i kid you not, 6 years before my parents let me have a dog of ANY kind) I urge you to NEVER buy from a pet store. Our family did extensive research on humane breeders in our state and bought one after we triple checked that the breeder was not a puppy mill operator. Always do your research!!

    To my subscribers: the reason I recommend you watch this video is because this applies to all animals. Dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, mice, ANY animal sold at a petstore. No good breeder would sell their animals to a petstore. No petstore employee is going to tell you the real story of where the pets are from.
    Adopt, don't shop.

      +The Humane Society of the United States - Did you go to "My Next Puppy" in Chantilly? It's not far from "Dreamy Puppy". It is assumed by many that their puppies are from puppy mills, but AFAIK there's not yet proof.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 7 років тому +2

      When you "adopt don't shop", what happens to the existing pet store pets and breeder pets who don't sell? Because they need loving homes too.
      And before you give me the schpeel about how buying a pet will fund the market for the puppy mill, I KNOW THAT. I'm asking what happens to the existing pets who don't sell, and if there is a practical way to give them desirable homes without funding the very industry that abuses their biological family members.

    • @imstumped
      @imstumped 7 років тому +1

      carultch - this is exactly how they get customers and stay in business.
      So what actually happens, at least ideally and in one case that I know of? One of the pet stores near us got investigated. The animals were inspected, seized, held for a while (with vet care and all that) during all of the legal proceedings - and eventually put up for adoption through our local (almost-no-kill but essentially no-kill) shelter. Being adorable, very young puppies, I'm pretty sure there were lines out the door to adopt them.
      Here's an article about them being up for adoption after the court case(s): wtop.com/fairfax-county/2016/05/puppies-seized-from-fairfax-pet-store-now-ready-for-homes/ and here's the followup post from the shelter, with much of the same info as that article: facebook.com/FairfaxCountyAnimalShelter/posts/1272539839440936%3A0
      But in less ideal cases - I've *heard* that the un-adopted, un-purchased puppies may get sent back to the mills and killed. I've not yet seen independent proof of this. What does seem to happen is that the puppies' prices get marked down until they sell, or the store gives them away (see bestfriends.org/resources/pet-store-puppies-why-you-shouldnt-rescue-one).

    • @imstumped
      @imstumped 7 років тому +1

      On a related note - why not to buy pet store puppies - here's a public court document from that recent case near us, discussing the health of the puppies seized from the store in question.

    I remember being in Italy once when I was about 6 years old and all I wanted at that age was a puppy. Where I live you can't really buy any anymals from stores like you showed in the video. We went to a small mall in wich they had an animal shop. I was there and saw the cutest little puppy sitting in a small glass cage (the ground was not much bigger than an A4 paper sheet). It was sitting in there on some shreds of a news paper and I think it didn't even have food, just a little cup of water. I -as a 6 year old- of course wanted to rescue it from the mistreatment and begged my mom to buy it.
    My sister was only 3 years older but has always been smarter and simply told me: "Don't. If you buy it there will just be a new one replacing it." That truth struck me with a force I had never known before.
    Since then my knowlege about the things animals endure has slowly grown and my wish to change those things with it. I can't believe all the stuff that's going on that so little people know about.( Dolphin slaughterings, animals that are being bent and stretched to fit our view of 'cute', chicken industry all over...)
    This is all so terrifying and I feel like I'm trying to move a mountain. Whatever I do, it's not enough... I see this world dying right in front of me and there's nothing I can do to stop it...
    Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way?!

    My two babies came from two of those stores. One came from Pet go Round and the other from Family Pet. They came to me as rescues through a rescue because they were deemed unfit for sale and were going to be sent back to the breeder where they would have been killed. Today, Miss Muggles is a happy beautiful 7 year old girl and Phoebe will celebrate her 6th birthday next month. I was going to get another little girl "Lily" (what I named her) from Pet Go Round again as a rescue but while in surgery, she ultimately succumbed to her illness and passed away. My life has been filled with educating people and bringing awareness to the conditions these fur babies are born into, Thank you so much for this video!

    We didnt adopt our two kitties, but thats because my mother wanted a specific breed, that would be ideal to live indoors (british short hair) we visited every shelter possible around us and did a lot of research, before we visited a local breeder and informed ourselves throughly, the cats were living in paradise, and went from a paradise to a even bigger paradise, they live in a big flat with two teraces and lots of attention and playtime for three years now >~< It never crossed our minds to buy at a pet store, because it wouldn't be clear from where they were from.

    When I was in Elementary School, I wrote a story about ending puppy mills. It ends with kids taking a sledgehammer to the very last puppy mill building and rescuing all the doggies inside, and they were all so happy and they just bolted from the building. The "humans" running the puppy mill all go to jail in the end, too. :) I am hopeful that something like that could happen, and that, unlike in the story, it will be before 2050. (The end of the story took place in 2052. The setting for the story started in the 1950's.)

    That's where I get mine ... they are good good dogs that love in a special way that only they can express . Hannah my recent dog came to the shelter with unadoptable issuses, an abuse case, heartworm positive and highstrung ,she was going on 3 years old , not a cute little puppy anymore and being a Shepard mix well her hyperness wasn't cute .
    Well that was back in march of this year , to date she is the most loyal girl and loves her family to moon and back again . She still suffers fear of storms but kenneling her has given her a safe retreat . I love shelter dogs and if you can please seek your next best bud there first . They will pay you back three fold in their love and devotion.

    This makes me feel ashamed of living near a pet store that had all of this. I would go to one pet shop all the time when I was young, I still go there to this day. I went to the pet shop today and noticed the rabbits and the “habitat” they lived in was all gone, just glass boxes. Then my uncle said he read an article on a pet shop in Virginia that one of the shops were giving some customers diseases because of the rabbits. We are not sure it is the pet store I go to but seeing the rabbits and the habitat missing, that is a very large hint it might be that store. I got nibbles on by one of the rabbits the week before they put the rabbits away, I hope it was just nibbling and not spreading a disease. I do not buy from these sort of stores, just fish. (Btw the kittens they were selling seemed to not have been cleaned in a long time. Their fur was grouped in little chunks as if they were getting matted. I would consider thinking of visiting Petland in mantua, Fairfax, Virginia)

    We have a pet store just like this in Towson. It's called "Just Puppies". Very tiny and cramped shop, with both window and glass door covered so you can't see inside until you walk in. My mom took me there years ago because I wanted a puppy and there were none at both shelters we visited. It didn't even take me 2 minutes to understand what was going, mind you this was years ago and I didn't even know what puppymills were. Most of their puppies were underweight and sick looking, not to mention the horrible smell and tiny cages. I got out of there so fast and never went back. Still have never owned a dog, but have now adopted a cat.

    so I am the gentleman quoted as saying ".... you cant make money and care about animals" In context the conversation was like this; in reference to the person with the camera asking me if we do really well, in short we do well enough for me to rent from a friend and pay my bills and employ a few people. I have actually never "made" any money that could be referred to as profit. This was what I actually said; "There is a clear line in this industry. We don't cross that line, and we have decided to put the care of animals before profits. We hang in there.... because you cant make money in this business if you care about animals." Its funny to me because all of my animals in my store are healthy, and you couldn't find anything wrong with my store, the puppies or who bred them so you're answer is to take my words out of context to make me look bad. The funny thing is that states like missouri, kentucky, and tennessee all know they are home to puppy mills. Shut them down!! All that passing legislation prohibiting the sale of dogs by retail locations is doing is making these "brokers" sell them out of their homes. There are several websites that OWN houses throughout the country and sell their puppies through private residences. Then you have absolutely ZERO legal recourse if the puppy you bought is sick or worse.

    We got our last dog from a family friend who believed we could take better care of him. His name was Indy and he was a Golden Retriever. We loved Indy but had some strange health issues despite only being a year old. For one, he was always dragging one of his legs and seemed to have a very low stamina. One day, he got very sick and died before the vet could figure out what was wrong with him. He was two years old and it seems unlikely that he would have died from cancer. If you live in London the best place to get dogs that are probably not from puppy mills is this place called Woodgreen Animal Shelter have dogs cats and all types of animals but instead of getting them from pet stores in puppy mills they get them from from other people who want to rehome their dog or animal

    We bought a kitten from a PetLand in our area, and they told us he was just a tabby they got from a local breeder. I looked at him and thought it was a bit strange as he didn't really look like a tabby, but we bought him anyways. We later got him checked by a vet and she told us he was a hybrid, part Asian Leopard and part Bengal. We loved him dearly and had him for a long time, but it goes to show that these pet stores will lie to get money, they don't care about the animals at all.

    There is a pet store called the Pet Fair in the Woodlands mall that I’ve been to many times. Every time I go there I feel so bad for the animals because they’re all sick and have many health issues,bad conditioning in there,etc. I’m trying to get people to spread the word about this and maybe get people to sign a petition to stop this madness. Please spread the word and sign this petition so we can help these poor animals. #DontshopAdopt!

    The only places I see around me are shelters, I've never seen an actual pet shop. There are people who sell their dog's puppies or other animals on the local market, but they're not mistreated that way. Also, we have a couple of places that sell farm animals or animals like horses, hamsters, and bunnies. I always feel bad for the bunnies because nobody wants the big ones, so there's a giant pen of bunnies.

    I live in Virginia and my dad got our dog at a pet store in the mall. I was 10 and didn't even know puppy mills were a thing. I just saw a cute puppy and didnt even care where we got him from. It's honestly sad that this isn't more well known.

    We have 3 animals and none of them were adopted...
    Surprised? Shouldnt be cause we didnt buy them either! We have a labrador chihuahua mix and a german sheperd and rottweiler mix and a calico cat the lab-huahuas name is august but we sometimes also call her augie the german rott-perds name is Mocha i call he smochie alot and our calico cat is named Bailey! We got mocha in the mountains when she was so small and cute from someone so loving and caring she wouldnt give them to the pound. She even offered to give mocha to us for free! I do believe we gace her the money anyways though :P and bailey came from one of the elderly members of our church we had to catch them cause they would hang outside alot and were very young but eligible to move. She still looks like a kitten actually! What makes her cute these days is that no matter the light her pupils and eyes are always wide open. Random person:Adopt, Look, Sho*Car movie stopping noise* Me:WAIT A SECOND! NO! DONT SHOP!

    This makes me sad. My dogs were both adopted. One was from my brother's neighbor. Her female dog got out before she could be spayed and she decided to keep the puppies and give them away when they were of age. The other one my grandma found in California in a pile of rubble. and brought her back home to Washington. They are my "babies" and I can't imagine them having lives like that. I want more dogs to love but my current situation prevents me from adopting more. instead, I donate $5 monthly to my local shelters/pet rescues. I know it's not much but I like to think I make a difference.

    We got our doggos from breeders, and we went to the location directly and saw all the dozens of happy doggos running freely around a large plot of land, I know We couldve adopted, but the owner clearly loved them and wanted to be sure they were going to a good home. I would definitely consider adopting when im an adult tho. I hate petsmart and large pet corporations, and I’m never going to even think about supporting them again just how they treat not only dogs and cats, but how careless and heartlessly the companies’ policies treat fish, rodents, and small reptiles (very much so fish). I’m not even a fish person, I don’t want have them, but god damn it, they are living animals that need to be treated properly.

    *there was a pet store in my area called pet land and they had dogs in crates to were they only had about enough room for them and the food dish. oh and the floor on the cages where wire. some of them had matted fur and some had yellow gunk in the eyes. in some cages there were moms with about 5-8 babies and they were all cramped. when employees got the dogs out so you could hold them, they would grab them by the legs really quick! some were dizzy after being handled like that! and when you got to hold them they seemed scared out of their minds and would cower in the corner. ADOPT DON'T SHOP! *
