what speed are your turning at. my lathe has the speeds according to the belts and placement. the manual said 1600 was a common speed and thats what its currently on. I wished i had paid better attention when i bought the lathe, i was so excited, i didnt even realize to change the speed you have to open it up an move the belt. The old micro lathe surprisingly had a knob to lower or increase the speed and i guess i got spoiled with that.
Hello Bonnie! That's a great question. Usually, I turn at a high speed when I'm shaping the outside. Very low when I'm roughing it out and opening it up with a carbide tip. I'd say around anywhere from 2000 to 3000 and sometimes if it's very delicate like a finial I'll turn even faster. I have turned with the speed all the way up to 4000. I did read somewhere that your piece is much more stable the faster it's turning. From my experience between the Harbor Freight lathe and Delta, I'd say it is very true since the HF doesn't go as fast (Only about 2400). The slower it is turning the more I experience slight bounces from imperfections etc. Speed does help when a piece is not a perfect piece of wood. Especially, if you're dealing with air.
@@SunsetBayBonnie , just remember I'm self taught and no expert by any means. You've piqued my interest to do some research on wood turning speeds. Thank you Bonnie!🙂
