I’ve grown mine from Victoria seeds. All germinated and made sturdy plants by end of August. They’re huge big stalks and leaves left on that haven’t yet been cut by frost. I’m amazed , if they come up next season I think I will be able to harvest a few sticks. Well worth doing!
I absolutely adore what you do, this my first time trying my hand at gardening .And I'm filling confident about it.......Apart from the chickens eating my tomato plants ; ( Sweet corn & butternut squash looking good.....I planted 3 squash' and there all growing at different rates.....Still experimental this year......ALL the best ....I she'll be visiting the woods today, to find lots of lovely leaves to compost. And to put in my raised beds......I'M LOVEING IT!!!!!!!!! JOjo
Seeds are easier and better than root cutting. My 8 rhubarb plants I seeded in April this year are now bigger than the one you planted last year after a little bit more than 2 months of growth.

when you say 50% potting mix and 50% compost, do you mean a commercial potting mix that is already 50% compost? Or adding more of your own compost to a commercial potting mix?
I've been doing rhubarb from seed (I want to select breed, just to weed out the ones that bolt early). Have you had any problems with seed grown plants going to seed early in the season?
Huw, someone showed a method (I think it was Percy Thrower, ask your grandad who that was) of sowing seed in wallpaper paste and piping them into the soil. Do you know anything about that? Is it a good method? Thanks
What is soil? Please define. I know what compost is but is soil just any old mud from outside? Does this take a year to get to that size in the vid? What time of year to plant seeds? Thanks
It depends on your zone really, I'm in Zone 8 so will plant late March under cover, any later zones plant earlier, earlier zones plant later. Thanks for watching!!
So I am a severely amateur gardener. I've been tyring for 4 years but moreso in 3 years. On the rhubarb note I have bought 2 packs of Victoria seed. There are about 100 seeds per pack 🙈 I've been buying lots of seeds of all varieties so recently I've just realised that I would need 2 acres at least to grow what I have before expiration. Does it matter if seeds are expired in date? I also want to ask why is gardeners soil so sandy in the vids. I buy huge amounts of organic potting and salad soil from a local seller . So can someone tell me why all the UA-cam gardeners have crumbly soil. Am I being dumb or missing something?? Should I mix it up with something?? I have lots of huws books for few years and literally only beginning to understand terms . Forgive me I'm a homeschooling mother of a young family and I also run a business so gardening is full time task in my opinion which I have minimal time for but i have put more time into planning this full year. I have recently only learned some light bulb moments
A friend gave some seeds from US to grow in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It is winter time here (June - Sept) with temperatures ranging from 55 to 75 F. Any tips? Tks.
I have never seen a rhubarb plant flower. Possibly because I harvest too early. Is it possible to let one plant flower and harvest the seed from that ?
yes just let it flower then go to seed i planted the seed and in a week they were up growing just make sure its nice fine soil and compost mix fill a seed tray with some water without holes and place your seed tray with holes in it just push the seeds down slightly in the mix with your finger then make sure you cover the seeds in the separate seed tray with cling film and place in the poly tunnel mmmmmmmmmm yus lovely rhubarb and custard yummy its a good idea to soak the seeds first over night mmmmmm
+key c It is a perennial plant where you eat the stems (never leaves) in things like Rhubarb fool and crumble. Easy to look after and grows for many years. Thank you for watching :)
I don't like pencil for labels as it tends to wear off easily, I find a sharpie and popsicle sticks work well and are cheap. also you're not really supposed to add compost to starter mix.
A very late reply I know but..... old drinks cans cut up and letter punched last years and years (If you don't lose them of course like I do all the time 😮💨) ✌️😊

This is great to see! I have many rhubarb propagated by division but growing from seeds is fantastic!
I’ve done this - they’re so cute when they’re babies!
Thanks so much. I have been wanting to grow rhubarb from seed. This video gave me the confidence to try.

Very helpful and easy to follow instructions thank you.
Hi Huw - I've just recently sub'd to your channel, which is great by the way. Have you ever tried growing your rhubarb from your own saved seed ?
always a good update and straight to the point, thank you
+Marina Wilson Thank you very much.
Best time of the year to sow Rhubarb?
Spring.
Depends where you live in the world. I am in the USA in Alabama near the Gulf of Mexico. We have two growing seasons, spring and fall
This is a really helpful video. Thanks!

What’s the best time of year to plant?
I have one rhubarb growing from last year. do I just collect the seed flower from the top and dry them out?
Thanks Huw. I didn't realise it was that simple to grow from seed. Informative as always. :) Jazz.
So can I start them and put them in the ground after a few months?
Great Channel!
Just subscribed. 👍
Thank you for this video. I just got my Victoria rhubarb seeds and the package said 25" deep. Wow that is deep 😂
Helpful video, thank you sir

Can you harvest the rhubarb from the first years planting from seed ?
Thanks for the video
How do I collect the seed from the plant? Mine just seem to turn to dust and fall off.

In the UK what is the best time of year to sow the Rhubarb seeds?
thanks for advice
Thank you for watching :)
So what happened to the period between planting, 2:00 and the plant being ready to plant outside, 2:09?
Good stuff.
How long does it take for them to mature to harvest size? More than one season?
3 years I would guess..
Yet again...very helpful. Could anyone please tell me, what month is best to sow.......Think you

Yes that will be fine to start the seeds :)
I have had a packet of seeds for over a year and can never seem to grow any rhubarb. I live in Southern California
I planted around 6 seeds at different times directly in the ground, but nothing came up
Can you help my rhubarb has started to grow very thin sticks these are old plants 5 years plus thanks
Nitrogen in spring and phosphorus in late summer/autum
How long would it take to germinate?
About a week :)

how exactly do you eat it? raw??
The leaves are poisonous, you only eat the stalks. Most people prepare as a dessert but, very versatile and can be used in other ways.
Can we eat the leaves
Thanks
No not for eating
@@petertaylor4758 no leaves are toxic
please explain what is this planta and why we should grow it.Thanks

This showed nothing, just a complete waste of time
