How To Speed Shift A FOXBODY T5 Without Breaking It!

  • No-Lift shifting is the fastest shift you can perform hands down! But if done incorrectly it can be catastrophic for your transmission. I stopped power shifting my cars years ago and starting " quick shifting " instead. It's a lot easier on your transmission and there is less of a chance to miss a gear.

This also depends on what shifter you have. You are going to miss a lot of shifts if you do this with a stock shifter or, you are going to over extend the shifter because you put too much muscle into the shift. A good shifter makes a ton of difference.

That's where the pro 5.0 tower shifter comes to play.

@@mrbighands That was the weapon of my choice. I broke a Hurst aluminum on the 1-2 when that thing was popular. Put the Pro 5.0 power tower in and never broke another shifter again. Adjust the stops and slam away. I powershifted every race. Didn't break a thing.
It took me a while, but eventually I learned to power shift my 1993 Taurus SHO which makes a big difference when you are racing Mustangs. Billy Glidden powershifted an SHO to 14.7. Most people with Mustangs could afford them, but not drive them properly, so I had a lot of fun with them in the SHO.

First time I tried to power shift my old t5 was about 5 years ago and I absolutely ruined it on stock power in my 86 GT. Jammed the shifter between 1st and second got it home and took the trans apart turns out I split the 1-2 gear synchro hub lmao you can shift a t5 pretty fast. I have rode in fox bodies with experienced drivers and they will surprise you how fast you can shift. It’s about taking that load off the internals for the split second during the shift. If you can practice and get that down a t5 is an awesome transmission man

@@rodneygodin7773 my headers are wrapped but that's not really the problem, the primaries run directly in front of the mounting hole and the steel collar sticks straight out so its not even remotely close to going in unless I bend the steel collar at a 90° angle which would bind up the cable, it's on a 79 pinto and that is about the only longtube headers made for it and I think that they were really made for a automatic , I know a few others who had to do the same thing that I did. I just wish I could use the cable setup because it is much easier and less prone to go bad

My friend bought a 1997 GT. I told him T5 and T45 aren't transmissions that can constant abuse / punishment. He only believes in no lift shifts... after month of that 2nd gear stiff and 3rd barely works. And of course being a GM fan mainly at heart he blames Ford for releasing junk. Eh, I told him its a tranmission design that's 40 years old. You might get away with that in a ZL1 or a GT350 or something in modern standards but not even Iroc would withstand that abuse either. Anyways, he sold GT and buying a LS1 6spd and I look for him to have similar issue if not sooner than atleast later. It doesn't hurt you to engage a clutch! It's what these cars are designed to do by OEM. You abuse it and it's gonna treat you like a abused car. You take care of a care and it's gonna take care of you. Even if I put a T56 into a foxbody I will still be clutching my shifts.

What shifter do you prefer? Whoever can chime in. Anybody ever try the 40-50 dollar eBay shifter?
