    One explanation: Hakkapeliitta (Finnish pl. hakkapeliitat) is a historiographical term used for a Finnish light cavalryman in the service of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden during the Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648). Hakkapeliitta is a 19th-century Finnish modification of a contemporary name given by foreigners in the Holy Roman Empire and variously spelled as Hackapelit, Hackapelite, Hackapell, Haccapelit, or Haccapelite. These terms were based on a Finnish battle cry hakkaa päälle (English: strike upon [them]; Swedish: hacka på), commonly translated as "Cut them down! or "Rough 'em Up!"

      The hakkapeliitta really fascinate me. I've read of accounts (not sure what sources would be so take this with grain of salt) that the imperial soldiers would first laugh at the sight of them, because the Finnish horse at the time was so small compared to europeans that the looked like they were riding ponies, and the men themselves were rugged and Stern unlike their imperial gentlemen counterparts.
      Then they would keep quiet at all times: no taunting or shouting, just a dull stare across the field.
      And when the chargee happened, they didn't fight like light cavalry at the time was expected to. Instead of riding close, firing the pistol and retreating, they fired the pistol, drew their swords, shouted the HAKKAA PÄÄLLE (only thing they would be heard shouting), and then proceeded to chargee straight in and slash at everything.
      For the imperials, that was not the way the enemy was supposed to fight at all, and the shock combined with ruthlessness gave them an intimidating reputation. Gustavus Adolfus rode himself with them on multiple occations, and their charge was a turning point on many of his greatest victories.
      Apart from maybe the men who fought in the winter war, the hakkapeliittas are by far the most legendary Finnish warriors of all time.

    10:49 the war cry "Hakkaa päälle" directly translated would mean "Strike upon (them)". It could also be translated as "Cut them down". It was the war cry of the Finnish light cavalry Hakkapeliitta's fighting under Swedish flag during the Thirty Year War 1618-1648. In the movie review Tuntematon Sotilas, that you did, shows a scene where the old captain encourages the soldiers to advance by yelling the longer version "Cut them down, sons of the North" (Hakkaa päälle pohjan poika). The captain died soon after, but he got the soldiers to advance.

    The subway system in Helsinki looks basically like a two-pronged fork, so it is much more easier to manage than the much more massive subway syste in cities like New York.

    • @SampoPaalanen
      @SampoPaalanen 3 роки тому

      It's also a lot "younger" in then NYC Subway with the New York subway being over 100 years old (in general as it first opened in 1904), while Helsinki Metro opened in August 1982 so barely older then I am. Helsinki Metro has 25 stations with another 5 under construction atm so yeah it's a lot smaller then NYC Subway.

    When I was a kid my auntie lived next to a water treatment plant (or something like that) in Helsinki. They had this long city wide military exercise and the water plant was one the zones. I got to check out what they were doing from the balcony. It was bit surreal when you popped into the the shop downstairs int he morning, for some milk, and there was a dude with full gear and a weapon behind a slide in the playground :D

    Haha VYKS/Readiness Unit (black arrow on green background on their sleeve), greetings from former Kainuu Brigade VYKS . Better equipment and training than what other units get and the service lasts a year instead of the half year what regular jaegers and pioneers and others get. Oh also noticed that Maakuntajoukot/Territorial Forces got few seconds on the video 10:10, they are basically volunteers for the military who get called in on short notice if there is some need for them in their province, they do it without any other benefits than to just shoot assault rifles in these exercises and have fun doing army stuff :D(and ofc help when needed) basically the national guard of Finland.

    Since none hasn't yet linked the entomology of "hakkaa päälle!" here it is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakkapeliitta
    Short version it's a battle cry of Finnish light cavalry in the service of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden during the Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648). So it's a historical battle cry of the very bad ass light cavalry that struck had and fast. In original/historic context "hakkaa päälle" would translate as 'cut them down!'. When you beat someone up he might survive when you cut them down... they won't. Hakkapeliittas where more about the cutting them down.

  • @hierojakalle
    @hierojakalle 3 роки тому +3

    Hakkaa Päälle Pohjan Poika translates loosely Beat Them Son of the North more literally it's put the beating upon them SotN. Same warcry is used in Unknown Soldier in the first attack by the major who got shot when he gets the boys up at the swamp. It originates from 1500's when Gustav the 2nd Adolf, king of Sweden, had his 30-year war and was used by elite Finnish cavalry unit called Hakkapeliitat when they roamed and pillaged and burned much of current Germany. Hakkapeliitat came mostly from westcoast of Finland, people who even by our own standards are straight speaking, stubborn and violent. There was a historic event that king Gustav wanted to make peace with Danish so he took 200 Hakkapeliitta riders and rode into Danish camp and Danish thought that the main Swedish army was just behind them so they gave up to his terms when in reality they were nowhere near.

Before anyone says its not possible, yes it is possible in some situations, because you are not allowed to leave your rifles unguarded (to the vehicle for example).

    "Hakkaa päälle" was the battle cry of Finnish soldiers during The 30-year-war. In old Finnish and still on moderni Estonian (hakka peal) it still means basicly "let's go, let's start". Google "Hakkapeliitta" or "Hakkapeliitat" in plural. Modern Finnish has changed since those days and now it sounds a bit confusing. Well "beat on".

There are lots of active reservist in these local troops, so people like to buy own gear to be more okay in trainings...
