THIS VIDEO CAME LITERALLY RIGHT ON TIME. I have my first graduation shoot today and I wasn't confident in how to use my flash properly. Thanks so much.
I’ve watched others try to give this tutorial but this one helped me. Simple advice - expose for the ambient before introducing the flash !!!! Great advice.
Good tutorial. I have been struggling with ambient light with off camera strobes. This really simplified my thinking. Tried it last night and shots were perfect. Thanks.
Omg this video saved my life! Thank you Manny! Keep doing what your doing your are changing lives and being a blessing to so many. You explain things so well and make the viewer feel so comfortable and right at home.
I am picking up some very good tips from you, I take pictures of dancers and gymnastic kids and adults, there glittering outfits cause me no end of issues but your help about flash is helping me. Many thanks Nigel in the UK.
Manny, watching some of your older videos and see you have come a long way from before! You seem to be so much more shy in front of camera and now you are just a pro! Glad to see you grow man!
I watched the clip many times and gained a lot of knowledge. I like method 2, it gets depth of field. Thank you for the great knowledge given..........from Thailand FC
This is the most helpful tutorial I’ve seen regarding exposure with flash. Thanks Manny and keep up the great work. Always a pleasure to watch your videos!
I've watched about a dozen vids like this today and all were "Technical" and tryin' to sell me kit... Thankfully somebody explained it step by step and showed with/without HSS (which I don't have and as an amateur, don't wanna buy)... Genuine thanks. New Sub ;-)
Wow... Watching your old video are totally different then your current ones... Is good to see when you started this and what a long away... Great work and i really enjoyed watching your informative videos... Thanks a lot... 🙌🙌
This is an older video but really needed for me with finally getting my speed light and trigger. Thanks. I needed the step by step, but now it should be easy.
Its one thing reading this method, it’s another thing being told in a video. But it’s a WHOLE new ballgame to actually see it the way you presented it. THANK YOU SO MUCH 🤗 you are a photographers best friend. Subscribed.
Iv'e watched a number of your tuts but somehow missed this one. This is exactly how I do HHS. I have seen all the different methods used and have tried many. Coming from a film background this is the quickest and best way to get proper exposure
Finally someone that discusses their exposure. This is so so needed. Thank you. I have assumed that you were going 1-2 stops underexposed but its nice to see verification. Most others demonstrating the Sony/Godox union like Jason L. never give you useful details.
Hey Manny! This is an awesome and easy off camera flash tut. (it's hard to find the step by step video) Make it again with today's gear... I bet you gonna get lots of love! 🙌🏻 👌🏻
Hey Manny, thank you for this video, it is very helpful! I truly appreciate you not making this video technical. It is very understandable for newer photography enthusiasts such as myself. I learn so much about portrait photography from watching your channel.
I am pretty new to this, but i just don't understand why you would even consider using a flash and a external light outside? Is that just for the look of the picture?
oneleggedlifter if you are not using a flash in this situation, the background will be washed out (almost or completely white), which might not always be the way you want to go. Using a flash helps you get the right exposure of your subject and keeping the background “down”. What Manny is aiming for here is a darker background and a lighter subject which helps you separate the subject from the background. It lets you focus on the subject when viewing the photo.
Rewatched both videos on off camera flash and like always man you always come through clutch. Setting up for ambient light will help a lot. You the best. Your presets are the best as well bro. Hope you making a new pack soon.
Manny always a pleasure to view your videos. This one was very important because the novice photographer can see exactly how to set up his camera and flash to take a great looking ourdoor portrait with flash and balance for the ambient light. I hope to meet you some day,. I am in Dallas, Texas.
Thank you very much, I watched this video years ago , I didn't know much about photography, now that I understand everything you are talking about I found it great video and it helped a lot
Manny - thank you for this video! It is exactly what I was looking for! I have a Nikon Z6, and my lowest ISO is 100, is there where I would typically leave it as a starting point always? Thanks!
Great Video - you should do one talking about TTL and manual flash settings advantages/disadvantages and how to work in both. Would be super helpful for me and im sure your other viewers : )
Great video! Plenty of average photographers on here but I am impressed with your work. Technical skills are on point and I like that you shot some 125th at 4.0 because the average joe might not have high speed sync. The model was perfect, gorgeous and experienced...and a sense of humor. Always a plus 😀🙏
A third way to balance the flash with ambiant is to use neutral density filters (3, 4, 5 stops down). An economic way to use your old material not compatible to HSS... Your video is quite to the point and very clear and demonstrative. It gives me the taste to upgrade my Flash/Camera system! Thank you very much.
Good video. The only difference I use and recommend is that I meter for the background WITHOUT the subject or model in the view. There is a possibility that the ambient light on the subject, and what they are wearing, might give a skewed effect on the internal light meter. Give it a try.
Manny, I would love to see one day a complete behind the scene of a shoot that you are doing. Do you plan on ever releasing such content? It would be great to see not only how you set your camera but how you position the light, how you make the model comfortable as your are shooting 3-10 test shots before the actual good images pop up on the screen since you are tweaking the settings to balance light perfectly etc. Just a hint from a fan - I am about to buy the Godox 200 reporter flash and start my off camera flash adventure with portraits !
Hey manny. I like your videos. You make it look very easy. Got a question about this video. Was the flash in Manual mode Or TTL? So were you adjusting the power on the flash itself?
I can't tell you how long I've been looking for a video that walks through this step by step. Watching in 2019, great job!
same here... :P
2020, buying a7r ii for 975$ tomorrow and i CAN'T WAIT
Halloween 2020!. Same!! Thank you both!! =) ...
Watched a few videos and this is by far the most reliable and simple method. Good job.
THIS VIDEO CAME LITERALLY RIGHT ON TIME. I have my first graduation shoot today and I wasn't confident in how to use my flash properly. Thanks so much.

@@MannyOrtiz Damn Manny! These videos take me back, look at you now! Got your own modifier and everything! CONGRATS 🎊 👏 🎊
I’ve watched others try to give this tutorial but this one helped me. Simple advice - expose for the ambient before introducing the flash !!!! Great advice.

I am picking up some very good tips from you, I take pictures of dancers and gymnastic kids and adults, there glittering outfits cause me no end of issues but your help about flash is helping me. Many thanks Nigel in the UK.
If I could I would PAY you for this video! You taught me sooooooo much. Thank you. You are the master!
Manny, watching some of your older videos and see you have come a long way from before! You seem to be so much more shy in front of camera and now you are just a pro! Glad to see you grow man!
Finally!!!! I actually just tried it and it worked!! Thank youuuu
I watched the clip many times and gained a lot of knowledge. I like method 2, it gets depth of field. Thank you for the great knowledge given..........from Thailand FC

Jason is also a great guy. I've been following for a while now.
I've watched about a dozen vids like this today and all were "Technical" and tryin' to sell me kit... Thankfully somebody explained it step by step and showed with/without HSS (which I don't have and as an amateur, don't wanna buy)... Genuine thanks. New Sub ;-)
Additional note... Nice touch sharing the name of the fellow UA-camr who showed you how to record your screen... Can't do a double thumbs up LOL

Dennis van Tol good explanation. This technique makes your photos look pro. Lighting is everything!
You’re lucky to have her being so patient to allow you to shoot your video.
She’s a model. They’re supposed to be patient. It’s part of the job.

Superb as always, Manny! Your techniques are so easy to apply in real world, and your videos are so succinct and informative! Thank you again!

Superb Manny...im just start to learn HSS, really helpfull ..wish the best for ya..
Omg! Thank you so much! I’ve been struggling with this so bad and you made it so clear!! 🤯
This is how i do my balancing. Thanks for sharing coz like u said theres a lot out there that are quiet complicated. Thanks for the video.

Thanks bro I always wanted to see someone’s screen. I wanted to see how others worked. Good stuff. I’ll check out Jason’s page too
Nice to be able to see the results of your settings and adjust them. With film, you had to use light meter on the flash to do the same thing.
Going back and watching this video... I see sooo much growth in you my friend.... keep doing what you're doing
Amazing, I am beginning flash photography is its going to help me a lot...full manual...balance the ambient...then adjust flash :)
This was incredibly helpful..thanks so much!
Manny this video is just great!!!! now I finally got it. keep up the great work.
Hey manny. I like your videos. You make it look very easy. Got a question about this video. Was the flash in Manual mode Or TTL? So were you adjusting the power on the flash itself?
Great job bro it makes my learning experience so easy
