How in the world does anyone have the insight or understanding to write something like this in their 20's? Such a gift.
I think it was Kris Kristofferson who non-judgementally said John Prine was a "a young man with an old soul"
I’d say it would be a old soul
Indeed
HELLO
There's also Jackson Browne. He's also an old soul'. Wrote some great songs when he was a teenager. That line "don't confront me with my failures. I had not forgotten them". For example.
I cried for my grandparents when I listened to this at age 16. It changed how I viewed them & how I became with them in my young years. I still miss them. Now I'm getting up there, & yes, it is this way. Almost like when you get to a certain age, you become invisible to so many. Say hello to someone who needs to hear it today. Then listen for a good, long time.
What a powerful statement. Thank you!
Lovely words.
You are so right. I was 17 when I first heard it and had the same reaction. More than 50 years later I find the song even more powerful. And it hits closer to home.
I'm a very shy and awkward person, but this song has me saying hello to every older person I walk past at the grocery store ever. Costs me $0 to give a smile and a warm hello.
My husband turned my dad on to John Prine two different generations brought together over Mr Prine , fixing cars, and a good laugh or cry ( depending on what John Prine song they were listening to. Both my dad and my husband have passed away, I know they will be very happy to see John, and to hear his amazing songs again!!! Much love to you all😘♥️‼️
This tune always brought a tear to my eye, even back in the day, now I'm out & out weeping.
Johns lyrics could really strip you down to your bare self, & make you feel. He had a gift for it.
I'm crying with you.
Feel better now, cupcake?
@@erewhon751 Do you???
@@daskitten1 Yup. Thanks for asking darling.
@@erewhon751 Hey Mr. Nowhere; Don't you have anywhere else to spread your hate & negativity???
Miss you John! I’m 79 and tear up every time I hear it. I’m fortunate to have such a great family and friends. I do know some who are lonely. Say hello to them. They are just like you. ☮️
One of the greatest songs ever written.
Here's another masterpiece about aging called The Dutchman by Michael Peter Smith. ua-cam.com/video/lGfz7clIDNw/v-deo.html
Not being American I haven't heard of John Prine. I came here from Seth Myers' tribute. What a loss to music. As I'm now older and our children have left home in the last 2 years, I feel this song so keenly. I'm sitting here, in my country, in isolation, just like most of you all are in America, crying a little over the beauty of this song, and worrying about all those we love. It is a hard time for all, especially the elderly. I'm glad now that my parents passed in the last few years. At least I don't have to worry about them. John Prine was a wonderful poet, singer and guitarist. A depth that is rare. I'm glad to have been introduced to him, not too late, because his music will live on. RIP John Prine, from a new fan. Stay safe everyone. And Rest in Peace to all those who have gone recently.
Nicely done
We had an apartment in the city,
Me and Loretta liked living there.
Well, it'd been years since the kids had grown,
A life of their own left us alone.
John and Linda live in Omaha,
And Joe is somewhere on the road.
We lost Davy in the Korean war,
And I still don't know what for,
Don't matter anymore.
You know that old trees just grow stronger,
And old rivers grow wilder every day.
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello."
Me and Loretta, we don't talk much more,
She sits and stares through the back door screen.
And all the news just repeat itself
Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen.
Someday I'll go and call up Rudy,
We worked together at the factory.
But what could I say if he asks "What's new?"
"Nothing, what's with you? Nothing much to do."
You know that old trees just grow stronger,
And old rivers grow wilder every day.
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello."
So if you're walking down the street sometime
And spot some hollow ancient eyes,
Please don't just pass 'em by and stare
As if you didn't care, say, "Hello in there, hello."
Can you believe how cute he was back then? Yet the music, the music-- his older self made this even more poignant; and the rich deeper tones to the voice added yet more. But listening to this, more raw and direct. Me and Loretta...: no forgotten dreams, love forever, JP.
One of the prettiest and saddest songs I've ever heard. What a talent. Thank you, John! You are so missed.
My world just got a whole lot smaller.
You mean bigger
Can’t wait to visit my grandpa when he’s back from Florida. I am going to say “hello in there” and I bet he’ll laugh his ass off. He used to make me listen to John Prine and Jim Croce when I was young and we’d drive together (while he smoked cigarettes with the windows up hah.. that’s in a song too) but I didn’t appreciate it at the time but now that I can comprehend emotions and what songs mean, john prine and those memories mean the world to me
Best song writer of all time the GOAT!! 70,s was the best music era ever!!
What a beautiful song from a beautiful soul. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I am so happy to hear this.
This world is a little dimmer this evening. RIP John. NFA
My little brother turned me on to this song when it came out. Raised my opinion of him to the rafters. He also beat me to the Beatles. Thanks, Little Brother. Miss John Prine like crazy.
His death hit me like I lost another best friend. And I never even met the guy. Saw him a few years back, the show was awesome. THANK YOU JOHN, MAY YOU REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND!
Made me cry 50 years ago. Makes me cry today. What a great great mind.
Praying for you John...Heaven can use you but this old world needs you..
...how...how does anyone find words like this...geezus, John Prine - how did you do this...thank you...thanks for reminding me to "feel"...this old world is a better place for you having passed through for a while...thank you...you are missed...
The price of growing old is one by one we lose our connections to the past
But it's still a blessing to live to an old age, u can die alot younger than 70,
Aww shit..I miss you man. Heaven got John before he even arrived. Be blessed my friend.
The best friend I never met. Did see him live many, many times. Best show ever was with Bonnie Raitt and Tom Waits.
RIP John Prine. Hard to think of America without his voice in it. What a loss.
A mark Twain of my generation.
Hang in there Mr.Prine
🙏🏽😭
This world is a better place, thanks to you.
Everyman’s poet laureate RIP John Prine world is less without you but your stories will live forever

RIP John. We were so blessed to have you. 💔
Fucking beautiful, and so needed today.
Dedicated to all the seniors in living centers where their relatives cant visit these days cus of the virus..proving yet again that great music is both timeless and always timely. RIP John.
What a great song-about life, one I’ve never heard before but l guess that’s what you tube is all about ... discovering music that other people have loved over the years👌adding to my playlist so l can hear it again
Possibly my favorite Prine tune. I don't know though, so many masterpieces
Wow. I am not the same after hearing John Prine sing this. 🙏🏻💓 Much respect and love.
My all time favorite! - Whether Joan Baez sings this, or Bette Midler or ... John Prine who originally wrote the words and brought this song to life almost fifty years ago. The generation that first listened to the song is now waiting... for someone to say hello in there!
or natalie merchant. she did it also
Barry manilow’s piano arrangement was amazing and the divine miss m’s singing style before she became bette Midler make their interpretation my favorite cover of this song.
Yes, you're right!
Another moving song about aging that may have you crying. It's called The Dutchman by Michael Peter Smith. ua-cam.com/video/lGfz7clIDNw/v-deo.html
@@lilianne478 Love this song. Looking for my "Margaret"...
A true masterpiece
Love John Prine’s pure compassionate cowboy heart. Also props to piano man for that small but so beautifully placed solo.
NS Pulled over to the side of the road in 1975 when heard on the radio. In my heart ever since. Have said hello whenever I could.
Nellis Smith this always comes to mind when I visit the nursing home. So many good souls to say hello to.
@@catdaddy3302 Just saw this hello.
@@catdaddy3302 Just saw this . Hello in there :)
RIP John, Lost one more legendary Artist but FOREVER WILL LIVE ON in those who love'd his music! Please don't bury me in the ground when I die!
That was always a beautiful song that makes me cry every time. Sad tears but happy at the same time.
John used to be young!
Best performance I've seen of this great song. Thanks for posting.
He's gone. God bless you John. I love you 😘
Get well soon, John Prine. You are loved by so many people. This is my fav. Thank you for your potent, witty, and poignant songwriting and singing. Appreciation, respect and love to you and yours. 🙏💕☮🎸🎶
RIP John. We’ll miss ya and to hell with C-19.
Fuck C 19
I saw him in Berkeley 2-3 times between 73 and 76. When I saw him last, he did acoustic first and then a band came out. This looks like a Brit show - no one seemed to recognize that classic guitar opening. Great version and he was nicely presentable, dressed in black with cool haircut.
👍
RIP John - Reunited with his buddy Steve Goodman. Bet they are making some great music together
My thought as well. Bless them both.
glad i was around when he was...
Genius.
He touched my heart. Hello in there, Dear John Prine. Fly with the ANGELS. RIP♥️👋😇
God rest his soul! And he sure had a lot of soul!
You and Dylan. My heroes. Rest now. Thank you, sir. You were loved.
RIP John. I’m sad.
RIP beautiful songwriter.
This is what an angel looks like.
my fav version with piano
He never wrote a song I didn't love. Saw him at Wolf Trap many times. I will miss him until I can join him. And I will say hello in there to someone every day I am alive. Damn the virus.
Miss you John
Rest in Peace, John Prine
It's 'beautiful'
Thank you John. For everything.
Im 32...first came across John's work through his most recent album, Tree of Forgiveness, which was one of my favorite albums a few years ago. When I heard he was ill with Covid-19 I wanted to dive deeper into his work. Today is my first experience with this beautifully sad song. Couldn't stop crying as I listened to it over and over. Thanks for everything, John. Hang in there. We need you.
You have a lot of his great songs to look forward to as you explore his albums.
Remembering John on his birthday. Miss you.
Ahh geez Johnny. Killing me slowly.
Rest easy John. My God this hurts.....😢
John 🕊🕊🕊💔🕊🕊🕊
I love you always
Thank you for all the hellos and the way you changed me.
Will always remember the first time i listened to this and its never left me after all these years..rest well John
What a great loss! 😔😔💜Rip💜
Joan Baez recorded this decades ago. She and John were close. She just sang this on her youtube feed. Look it up. She sang from her house and dedicated it to her old friend. Lovely in every way.
I watched that. Beautiful. Both John and Joan are treasures in our lifetimes. This song has extra poignancy today with old people now not even allowed to visit with their families. Rest In Peace John.
Maestro, que bella melodía. Nos sentimos tristes en México por su parida, Descanse en Paz.
Godspeed , John! Thanks for all the music.RIP
So poignant and beautiful and sad..John Prine is a lovely storyteller and soul catcher!
One my best friends, Loretta, died a year ago. RIP girl! Love you.
I was able to see John 25 years or so ago at the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville. It was a good show I was glad to be able to get tickets to.
Always loved this song. RIP John Prine.
You can beat the Virus John. You beat Cancer so you can make it through this. Please. We need you in this hard world to tell us truths about life. Get well and come back to sing for us. Praying for you.
RIP, John. We'll miss you.
RIP John.
We're praying for you John!
Who’s going to write such beautiful songs like this now that you’re gone, John? RIP
We liked your place John, it was familiar, it was real, it was home. You will be missed dearly.
So glad I saw him recently in Buffalo, NY...At one point he laid his guitar down and with his hands in the air, proceeded to dance around it as he remembered a very enjoyable, hot night he had back in the day...
I love this man...........such insight. And damn, he was a sexy handsome fella !!
Prine was best performing alone
Get well soon John. Your songs inspire myself and so many. You can beat this. We need more great songs from you.
Went to see this man in the Scotsman' s Pub in Donegal Town I think it was 1995, he was the most handsome looking man. Brilliant Singer. May He Rest in Peace.
One of my favorite songs though it makes me cry.
Reign in Power Mr. P. Hello in There.
Most beautiful song I've ever heard
SO BEAUTIFUL...like HE WAS....I've had this song in my head since I watched this the day he left us. He was ALWAYS an old soul. How lucky we are to have had him with us!
That accompanying piano is so awesome
R.I.P.
