  • Patrick Cassidy, Artistic Director of Studio Tenn Theatre Company in Franklin, TN, has organized a star-studded 30-year reunion of the original cast and creative team of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Tony Award-winning musical, Assassins.
The free online event will take place on Monday, March 8, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. CST, as part of the “Studio Tenn Talks: Conversations with Patrick Cassidy” series. It will be available at www.studiotenntalks.com.
Original cast members Cassidy, Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Annie Golden, Lyn Greene, Jonathan Hadary, Eddie Korbich, Terrence Mann, Debra Monk, William Parry and Lee Wilkof will join Sondheim and Weidman, director Jerry Zaks, musical director Paul Gemignani, and orchestrator Michael Starobin, among others. They will share how the show was created and provide behind-the-scenes stories of the first production, as well as rarely seen clips and photos.
“The original cast of Assassins was the most talented and celebrated team I have ever been a part of, and to have everyone back in one forum for the first time is almost beyond imagination,” said Cassidy. “Having Steve and John discuss the vision behind the story, which is very relevant even 30 years later, will provide fans a very unique experience. The cast will offer personal, probably never-heard, stories from the production, and several of us will even perform songs.
Join us Monday, March 8 at 7 PM CST for this special reunion show!

11:30 “So when you do write, what usually comes first? The words or the music?” “Usually the contract!”

Thank you so much for this! This production of Assassins literally changed my life; it kindled my love of US History, which resulted in a BA (for which I wrote a thesis on Czolgosz and the anarchist movement), during which I met my future husband, and inspired me to work in archives and special collections, which eventually led to a Master's of Library Science and my career as a librarian. Still hoping to go back and get a second Master's degree, for which my thesis will/would concentrate on a little explored aspect of Guiteau's life that probably had a hand in the eventual assassination of Garfield.

I’m sorry if this is out of line but I’d there any way I can read your thesis on Czolgosz. I’m studying a similar topic for university, and any works on the subject would be of great interest to me. I would of course credit you and your essay in my bibliography and footnotes- im not here to steal anything. If not totally cool - have a great day!

@@dcaouki No problem at all! Unfortunately, this was the early 2000s, and the original file got corrupted. The only remaining final copy is on paper, tucked away somewhere in my parents' attic, so it would be a small ordeal to get and make available! The good news is that there are *plenty* of sources available on almost every aspect of the McKinley assassination, Czolgosz, the anarchists, etc. I'm happy to provide more guidance if you'd like specific recommendations. :)

@@ericacr138 I would like that! I have a random fascination with learning about the assassins and their lives.

@@Monkey-D-Luffy911 I can put something together, but I'll have to ask for your patience - I wasn't expecting "put together a bibliography" to be on my lists of tasks for the week, lol. I'll do my best to respond by next week sometime. :)

I got the original cast album as soon as it came out. I was stunned. I've seen the show twice since then. I love it. Thank you for doing this. It was wonderful.

I loved Annie in the movie Hair - the perfect flower child. I had a chance to see her on Broadway in original cast of The Full Monty. Once again she was wonderful. I didn't realize Greg was in Assassins after watching him on TV since Allie McBeal. To see them re-create Unworthy of your
Love was one of the highlights of this presentation. Also had a chance to see the wonderful Debra Monk in Pump Boys and Dinettes in '82. Assassins had a superb cast and to see the affection they all have for one another warmed my heart. Stephen is so sharp at 90 - as vital as ever.

Very entertaining and informative show. I so love that Stephen Sondheim enjoys explaining his process. He is a teacher who shows by example, and his willingness to share that with his audience is an example of the love he has for those of us interested in listening carefully.

So sorry I didn't catch this live! I got to meet Patrick along with his lovely mom in 2015 at an event. Blew his mind when I handed him the CD insert for an autograph "MOM...look how young I was"

I am a little late to the party, two years' on, but thank you so much for this incredible reunion. One day after I moved to NY, my friend Jonathan Greene called me from the costume shop at Playwrights Horizons to see if I could start the next day...on this show. It was a breathtaking experience for the crew, too. xo

Such a great show. Thank you. I was lucky to stage manage a production of ASSASSINS in early 1993 in San Antonio, TX, and can attest to the audience reaction each night when they realized it was shifting into the Kennedy assassination. Some in the audience left at that moment, not able to face this event that they remembered living through.

It's difficult to think of any musicals made up of a
dream team. This dream team is extensive. I'm only really aware of them from a certain through a glass darkly UA-cam video and a treasured CD, and actually thankful for the video that in a strange way is like a window to a magical night.

Wow ! this was wonderful. I so wanted to see the original but it sold-out so quickly through Playwrights Horizon. I don't know if they had tickets for the general public. I did see the revival and , on DVD, the wonderful moment from the Carnegie Hall salute to Sondheim.

Greg Germann, Debra Monk,Terrence Mann, John Weidman, Steven Sondheim, Patrick Cassidy and Vic Garber :) And I still think Patrick fanboys about Victor! And wow at Unworthy Of Your Love :) It was like aww to see Victor smile and I had to chuckle that he used the cuss word, this is the first time I heard him do so in an online stream :P And btw one week from today VG turns 72, would you believe it ? Tho he has aged, he still has it !

I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion but Lord, how off is Lyn Greene! Emma Goldman fought for the workers and poor of the world. She is a pillar of strength as a woman and an immigrant. oof.

Lyn Green does not sound like your typical liberal Broadway actor. How refreshing.
