  • ”The birds of the world gathered from near and far. They said: No nation is without a leader; why is it that we don’t have one? A body without a head is without direction. Let’s seek a sovereign, without delay. And so they converged to seek a leader worthy of their nation of birds.”

Today’s AM Topic: ATTAR’S “CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS” - A HANDBOOK FOR AWAKENING
This time around, we’re taking it way old-school and delving into one of the deep classics of the Sufi tradition: the famous “Conference of the Birds” by Farid Ud-Din Attar (c. 1145 - c. 1220 CE). In its original Farsi, this work was composed as a long-form poem that included within its lines many stories within stories, all told by the wise Hoopoe bird to its fellow birds in order to spur them on in a quest to find the great and mysterious ruler of the birds, the Simorgh. The tale is certainly entertaining in and of itself. Nevertheless, Sufis have long understood it as a cleverly cloaked master guide to the Path of Awakening.
Please join us this morning as we peer ahead into the seven Valleys that await the determined traveler on this journey of unspeakable peril and wonder...

I felt like I was sitting in a circle around a campfire with all of you. Beautiful talk.
How is it that one feels nostalgic for something that never happened?
    Thank you.

Best of luck with your studies. You will learn more working from the Farsi than you ever could from translations.

[Noor] This was one of my favorite talk subjects, and it's about one of my favorite books. Conference of the Birds is always worth a revisit! Hopefully it's around somewhere convenient for you to find.

contemplating the word (hud hud) هدهد in arabic and its root in the arabic language; هد which means to demolish or to break down, connecting the root and the character of the bird in the story and how it's ego is annihilated points out an interesting connection.
Aside from that, I'd like to express gratitude for your content and my full support.

[Mushtaq] Thanks for your comment! It's an interesting connection. I am not finding that particular derivation in my Arabic-English dictionary. will look into it more.

[Noor] lmao. Thanks, Sydney! Reading these texts aloud is one of my favorite ways to avoid actually having to talk off the cuff, so now I have an excuse!! ;D
For real though, I appreciate your kind sentiments. Mushtaq and I both love doing readings of stories and poetry every once in a while, so perhaps another Sunday soon, we'll do that for fun.

Yes? What about it? Or are you just giving people a timestamp where they can skip the intro? That would be sad, because we always put a little Easter egg in the intro.

146:07" Working in isolation is hard, it's easier in a group" But ultimately every individual has to develop the ability to take every step by themselves. Otherwise, they are not truly independent. I might choose to work with 4 other people to build the house, but I must be able to complete the house by myself if needed. Because right at the end of the path it's just me and god.
Or is it me and the other 29 birds? Or are these the same thing?

[Noor] These are important thoughts and questions, and answering the latter for oneself is part of the journey.

You're right of course. But it's good to express the thought and question out aloud sometimes.
