    Thanks for your tutorials, I have tried for months to figure out Tasker. Your willingness to start at the beginning and show each step, not skipping anything, are what put this over the top. Your approach on starting simple and then building on those simple tasks really was helpful. Great job!

      Thanks, Tim. That was my goal. In learning Tasker myself I couldn't find anything that started from the basics. There are several good tutorials for intermediate and up, but not many that start from the foundation and build up. Glad you're enjoying them!

    I'm using a 3rd Party Home Screen Launcher - ADW EX. You are probably using the built in home screen by Samsung. Adding stuff to that homescreen may be a little different. If long press doesn't pop-up a box where you can choose apps/widgets/shortcuts, then try pressing the menu button when you're on your homescreen and see if a menu pops up with the option to ADD something to your homescreen. That might be how it works on S4 Native home screen launcher.

    Hello Frodo,
    First of all, thanks for your great playlist, ive learned a lot from it. Can you plase let me know how can I:
    I want to adjust my Nav bar, however once I do so I lose the Rotate button (the rotate button in the new android, if auto rotate is off and you rotate the phone a button appears that will rotate the screen). so is there a way to adjust the Nav bar, and also add the rotate button with the same functionality as the one already in android ( I was able to add a button that will turn auto rotate on & off, but I want to have one the same as the original one)

      The short answer is... I don't know. That's the thing about Tasker - there's a million things you can do with it, but you only know how to do the things you've done with it yourself. And I haven't exactly done anything like you're trying to do. Most things there is a way to do it - the trick is figuring out how. If you want some help I'd suggest posting in the Tasker Reddit forum and/or the Google Groups Tasker Forum - there are lots of people there with various knowledge and maybe someone who knows more about what you're attempting.

    I'm new to Tasker but having tons of fun with it. However, I'm having trouble figuring out how to make a particular task (maybe it can't be done...?). My work schedule is not always consistent and I get home late since I'm a bartender. I want to create a "Bedtime Mode", so that when I am going to bed my phone silences notifications, media, and dims the display (which I know how to do). The trouble I am having with this profile is that I want it to trigger after a certain amount of time after specific events on my calendar. For example, if I have on my calendar "Work from 5pm-1am on Monday", I want "Bedtime Mode" to be triggered at 2:30am because that is about when I will get to bed. Then if I am working the next day from 3pm-11pm, I don't want "Bedtime Mode" to be triggered at 2:30am as it did the previous day, but instead at another time such as 1am. Is it possible to create a profile that triggers tasks when certain calender events are over?
    If this can't be done, how about having my "Bedtime Mode" triggered when I plug my phone in to be powered? Then to prevent "Bedtime Mode" from being triggered when I plug my phone in while driving, when it connects to bluetooth "Bedtime Mode" is rendered inactive. So basically it will only kick in when plugged to a power source and NOT connected to bluetooth.

    • @hollywoodfrodo
      @hollywoodfrodo  11 років тому

      I know it's possible - the question is only how hard/easy is it. I'll look into it and see what I can come up with - maybe make it a lesson if I figure something out. Just an FYI, I use a NFC Tag by my bed. Simply tap it when I got to bed and it changes all my settings to "night mode". Then in the morning when my alarm goes off, it triggers a task to change all my settings for day time. Anyway, I'll get back to you on the calendar thing...

    • @LiveForTheDrum
      @LiveForTheDrum 11 років тому

      Okay, so I actually just figured out a work around last night. But it has nothing to do with the calendar, haha. I basically made a "State" task then went to, power, power, and set it to any. Then I turned that into a profile and set on that profile a time setting of 10:30pm - 6:15am. 10:30pm is the earliest I would ever go to bed and 6:15am is the earliest I would ever wake up. So between those times my "Bedtime Mode" will kick in whenever I plug my phone in. Since I plug my phone in every night before bed, this sort of made sense. However, there may be another reason to tie day and night modes (or any other type of event) to the calendar.

    • @hollywoodfrodo
      @hollywoodfrodo  11 років тому

      Ricky Dos Santos Glad you figured out a work around - best way to learn tasker - figuring stuff out! :-) But I also figured out a way to do exactly what you wanted to do. It's actually fairly simple. I'm gonna put it on my list of lessons that I will do in about a week or so. In the meantime, for the profile choose State > App > Calendar Entry. In the Title section put what you name your work calendar entries. For my test, I used Work - better to keep it simple. Choose the correct calendar under Calendar - I chose Google since that's my calendar for everything. For your Task - create a dummy task. Perhaps use Alert > Notify and enter a notification that will show up to let you know it's been triggered/working. Could later change it to Flash. Save it. Then long press your task and choose Add Exit Task. Create this new Exit Task - Add a Wait activity - make it as long as you want it to wait after the end of the Work Calendar entry. Then add other activities to set your night settings.
      The first "dummy" task is triggered whenever the scheduled event starts in your calendar. The exit task is triggered when the calendar entry is set to end in your calendar. I tested it and it worked for me. After the end time of my work calendar entry, the exit task was triggered, the wait activity cause it to wait for that amount of time, then the settings were changed.

    What are you using to get the complete set of volume settings when you slide down from the top of the screen? (about 16:15 mark)

      Ron King Hi Ron - glad you're enjoying the tutorials. You're seeing Widgetsoid in action. Did a review of it here: ua-cam.com/video/ybar-Yl1DJQ/v-deo.html However, it does way more than just the controls. If you ONLY want the volume controls I found a new app recently: Volume Button by Yogesh Dama - it's great for just the volume settings pop-up. Will be uploading a review of it soon.

    • @osumailguy
      @osumailguy 9 років тому

      hollywoodfrodo Volume Button by Yogesh Dama sounds much like "Volume Control Widget"by Serkun (play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Serkun&hl=en). Biggest difference is the widget itself displays the selected slider bars so you can easily see what the various volume levels are at any time.

    • @osumailguy

      hollywoodfrodo I'll check out Widgetsoid as I was looking for a "slide down from the top, see it from anywhere" type of volume control.

    Very detailed guide thank you. Could you tell me which tasks you have under "Battery Drainers" I want to create a profile that kills everything that drains my battery. If you could give me some insight, it would be appreciated.
    Edit: I noticed that if for example I have the night task set from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., if you click the night task when it is, for example right now its 7:25 p.m., that the night profile/task does not take effect. Is this because it is not 11 p.m. yet? I have the ringer volume set for on(3) during the night profile, it continues to be in vibrate mode which is what I have configured in my day profile.
    As well, is there a way to test a task/profile/scene instead of having to make a shortcut every time?
    -Thanks Josh.

    • @hollywoodfrodo
      @hollywoodfrodo  11 років тому

      Some of this gets answered as you do more lessons. Task can always be tested using the "play" button on the bottom left when the task is open. This executes the task. My Battery Drainers task is an OLD one from an old phone and actually doesn't do anything now - I need to delete it. If you have a profile that triggers Night Task at 11pm with an exit task at 8am, you can still manually trigger the night task anytime. Either by creating a desktop shortcut to trigger it or by opening the task in tasker and pressing that "play" button which executes the task. Or you can do like me and have an NFC Tag on your nightstand that you tap which triggers the night settings task - you do have to use a 3rd party NFC app that can trigger tasker task to do that one.

    • @joshwhite8293
      @joshwhite8293 11 років тому

      hollywoodfrodo Thank you for replying. I'm getting confused with the variables one but I'll rewatch and see if I can pick it up. Anyways, how would one go about making a task/profile for battery saving - more or less what should I include/not include for saving battery. Would there be a way to have data off, but when someone sends you a picture it automatically turns on and retrieves it then shuts off? I have Android 4.4 KitKat ROM on AT&T Galaxy S3(I747) and the battery life is atrocious for me

    • @ericglynnwrye
      @ericglynnwrye 11 років тому

      Josh White Yeah, variables take some time to fully understand, but the more you use them, the more they make sense. I've heard that 4.4 has some major battery drain issues. Not sure Tasker can rescue you from those issues. You can always go into settings & battery and see what's using the most battery. Pointless to kill things if they aren't using battery. It's also pointless to have a 4G phone and keep your data off though when you're at home or anywhere on wifi, you're phone should use wifi and not data so it wouldn't affect battery much to turn data off when you're on wifi. To answer your question, you could have data off and IF you receive an MMS, have tasker turn data on.

    So...Scenes and Tasks seem to implement an interface that Tasker shortcut points to (one yields an UI [with delay and prompts] for users to click a button (or something similar) to initiate an action and the other directly executes the action(s) without prompting)...how do we guard against exception/error scenarios? Also, let's say we run a dependant task that needed a condition to be true (that was probably setup by another task/scene) - how can we ensure that the criteria is satisfied and we can proceed forward or rollback/throw an exception? (is it by way of variables?)...Sorry to ask silly questions like this but I am seeing possibilities for a task to fail potentially...

    • @hollywoodfrodo
      @hollywoodfrodo  6 років тому

      I'd suggest posting this over in the Google Groups Tasker Forum for more in-depth responses from some of the gurus over there. Your points are valid and in some cases there are issues/errors that are difficult to resolve with no thrown exceptions. I like to refer to tasker as pseudo-programming. The logic is very similar but you don't have all the tools...of course you also don't have to memorize a bunch of syntax. It's a give and take situation.

    • @hollywoodfrodo
      @hollywoodfrodo  4 роки тому

      Probably not gonna be the answer you want... I don't know. Maybe. I mean there is a Tasker Add On called Auto-Input that allows you to emulate screen touches, but I'm not sure if it would work for that or not... I believe the screen would have to turn on, then be on home screen where widget is, then use auto input to tap widget then turn screen off. Should be able to do all that with Tasker. No particular video to demonstrate that exactly. But not too complicated other than the auto input part. Would also depend on your lockscreen. If turning your screen on opens to a lockscreen, getting around that can be hard with Tasker.

    • @hollywoodfrodo
      @hollywoodfrodo  11 років тому

      Usually that has to do with your Text to Speech engine and/or your phone and the way it handles Text to Speech. But there could just be a lag between the gesture and it triggering the task to say something, though again, usually that is phone specific if you have a lot of things fighting for cpu at the time including Tasker. However, I have a lot going on with my phone and don't generally see a lag for something that simple.

    Hello,
    I did everything you did, but I have an error when I try to open DayNight Scene. The scene is opening, but there is no voice :) the error is : TTS: unsupported locale default:default = default:ron_ROU.
    Thank you!

      +Titus Eugen Oana Might be that you don't have Text-To-Speech engine installed on your phone that supports your phone's default language. Not really a Tasker issue so much as just something with your phone. You can try picking a specific voice engine on your phone for the task. Obviously, you can't use TTS unless you have a TTS Engine that supports the language you're trying to have it read.

      +Miquel Aparicio Borràs Haha - did you back out of Tasker? Sometimes when creating a scene you have to back out (top right arrow) of Scenes then close Tasker completely (Android back button) then open Tasker back up before it works. It's sort of like it needs to save and refresh (although of course there isn't a save or refresh button) and this is the way to do it. Also, if all else fails, try restarting your phone (shouldn't have to do that, but never know). Lastly, make sure you have beginner mode turned OFF (unchecked) in your Tasker settings/preferences. Hopefully, something in there will get your working!

      Tossiqs haha - it's a give and a take. iPhones generally work more smoothly overall, but with Android you get so much more customization and control and lots of really cool stuff you can do!
