I love Shani Wallis/Nancy so much. She really was the heart and soul of the movie!

I read Oliver Reed's biography where he said he was a showman and that everything he did in interviews was a show because that's what the people wanted! He was a professional legendary actor who is greatly missed!

I've had arguments with friends over ''Oliver!'' winning the Best Picture Oscar of 1968. One friend said the award should've gone to ''Funny Girl'' while another insisted for ''2001: A Space Oddysey.'' However, I insisted, Oscar got it right with Sir Carol Reed's musical. One thing I pointed out was, the that as grim as Dickens' novel was, there were always cheerful moments in what otherwise would have been UNcheerful lives for all the kids in the workhouse, not to forget Nancy, BIll and Mr. Percy Snodgrass at the pub. That goes with life. I came from a working class family, but we always found time for joy and warmth. Also, I've always found Reed's direction of the children, particularly Mark Lester and Jack Wild, to be remarkable.

Most of those arguments against OLIVER! winning Best Picture come from Kubrick devotees who think 2001: A Space Odyssey is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I disagree. One has to remember the year 1968 in America. Both Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy assassinated and Anti-Vietnam demonstrations going on all over the country. OLIVER! was the film that spoke to the publics emotions. As one critic wrote, "Oliver! is a film to bathe in, to luxuriate in and even get cleanse by". It was that kind of film, particularly on the big screen in 6-track stereo and 70mm. OLIVER! is not only emotionally satisfying but its handsomely crafted. If it has a sin, it's that it makes poverty look arty.

Oliver Reed! I am always saddened when I think of what happened to him due to his weakness for liquor . This man had a presence without uttering a word . That Reed look was devastating! The only other actor with that intensity to my mind is the late George C. Scott. Reed could have gone places even as a potential replacement of Sir Sean Connery when he left the Bond franchise .
I hope Reed has finally found his peace

Thanks for this. It was fantastic. Oliver Reed was a great actor, but kudos to Shani Wallis for remaining calm and dignified in the wake of his rudeness and weird antics. When Oliver Reed branded them all as unemployable and joked he could've sung the part of Nancy, the immensely talented Shani Wallis could've easily called him out by inviting him to join her and Kathe Green in an impromptu performance of 'I'd Do Anything' and then finish with her best cockney accent reminding him to "Please keep his hand off her backside!" Instead she chose to engage in some friendly banter. Still, I wonder if she was thinking... what an annoying lout?

I was there that night. Oliver Reed was very nice to me at the private reception before for the film. He and Shani reunited at the reception and he was very pleasing and nice to her. There was plenty of wine to go around at that reception also. Everything was fine in the panel discussion until Reed snapped and started to repeatedly tell Shani to "shut up". It was embarrassing. If you look closely you can see the shift in Shani that occurs. Shani's husband, Bernie Rich was in the audience and was livid, After the film, people wanted to take pictures of Shani and Oliver Reed together. She was reluctant to be in a picture with him but did it as a courtesy. Johnny and Kathe Green taking all the credit for Mark Lester's singing voice is not entirely true either. Lester's singing is a combination of the two voices. Lester sang, but Kathe Green did the high and difficult notes. Lester was a master at lip synching. Overall it was a great evening. Very special.

Yes, I just purchased the 4K. I can't wait to see what it looks like when my 4K player arrives tomorrow. I enjoyed the extra's, but there could've been so much more included. Too bad they didn't get either Shani or Mark Lester to do the audio commentary.

I heard the picture on the 4K is a step up from the Blu-ray releases over the past number of years, sound as well.
