      “someone like her” exactly this. Mama saw tons of women like her being abused by the father and did to Keith what she was too afraid to do to Father. It's not shown in this video but when Mama chases AJ and he ends up in the room with Father, it's the only time you see her back away; it's the only time you see what you thought was the monster being afraid of the actual monster. Excellent storytelling.

    The casting is one of the things I ADORE about this movie. There's Bill Skarsgard (Keith) who people know as Pennywise so it subconsciously adds another layer of the distrust that you feel towards him at the beginning. And then there's Justin Long (AJ), who's been in a lot of comedy movies and horror movies where he's the victim so you almost give him the benefit of the doubt. The fact that the casting plays on/subverts the audience's expectations (along with EVERY OTHER MOMENT in this movie) is amazing!

    What I love about Keith's request for her to stay so he doesn't get locked in too is that it is both *completely unreasonable* (let her leave, dammit, you don't have to go see for yourself--that's the whole point of the movie, that men need to see for themselves/act like they belong everywhere they are) but it's got that tiniest *hint* of reasonable-ness to it--Tess is like, well, I did just get stuck and I don't want him stuck, too. It's a great way to get her to both 1) know she should leave, and choose to, even, but 2) also end up staying/going back down. Such an amazing movie.

      @JD-jz5gu Рік тому +11

      I mean, if you were staying there, wouldn’t you want to see for yourself if someone told you there was some weird shit going on in the basement?
      Most people wouldn’t just take the word of someone they just met.

    • @marsalien4
      @marsalien4 Рік тому +11

      @@JD-jz5gu well yes, you would want to see yourself. But the reverse is also true, he shouldn't expect her to stay and accommodate his own curiosity right then because *she doesn't know him*. If they were old friends, this would be different entirely in every direction. He doesn't understand that it's wild to expect her to stay for a stranger when she's afraid and thinks she's in danger.
      Just as he might not take the word of someone he just met, she shouldn't have to ignore her own fear "and just calm down" for someone she just met. But it's a very complex situation, which is why it works so well as a means of getting her to go against her better judgment

    • @JD-jz5gu
      @JD-jz5gu Рік тому +8

    was very surprised by the twists in the movie, thought keith was gonna be some demented kidnapper only for him to actually be a victim. introduced Tess as the first main character and then everything shifted, now we have a different main character who was not a good person and defies how we are usually supposed to see the main character-as someone to root for.
    AJ sees the man in the house as evil despite the assault he committed, and it looks like he's at an upward shift with his character qualities, only for him to show his selfishness again at the end. we see the "monster" was actually a victim herself and engages in these almost sentimental moments with tess, making the audience conflicted despite what she's done to others who were innocent.
    they wanted to intentionally show a false trail, where the monster woman looks barbaric at first when it was due to the man who committed monstrostities for years . AJ throws tess under the bus at the end, we thought the homeless man was going to hurt tess when he was chasing her, and we thought keith was going to prey on tess originally as well. was it a remark on the trickle effect of barbarian actions, or a remark on women being preyed on by men? all in all thought it was a good movie, love ur reactions!

  • @clarkmichaels822
    @clarkmichaels822 Рік тому +30

    The whole movie is really about expectations. Keith is awkward and kinda weird but genuinely harmless. A homeless guy running at you would scare everyone, but he was trying to warn Tess. AJ seemed like an amicable guy but was the person you should trust the least. The 'dad' pretended to be a mechanic for people to let their guard down and let him in their home. Then the monster was just a victim of incest sexual abuse who was closer to a wild animal than a person. And it's all enforced by the way it is shot and edited.

    It's funny that you only know Justin Long (AJ) from light-hearted stuff because I'm pretty sure his "breakout" role was in Jeepers Creepers, which is another horror movie. He's always been a pretty solid actor.
    I'm assuming what the woman did to him was supposed to be a direct (blatant) nod to Jeepers Creepers.

    Yeah, no worries about this one being predictable. There's something really refreshing about having no idea where a story is going. The Perfection is a Netflix film that has a similarly unexpected structure.

    I also just love the play and ramp up of tension in this movie. Some movies just go all in and because of that, you almost get fatigued by how much crazy is happening. The short introduction to Justin Longs character after allows the tension to plateu for a bit. Then you get the ramp up again and that’s more scary than had they just gone straight for jt.

    I went to watch it at the theaters blind as well. It interested me because I kept getting teaser ads from it since I watch lots of horror, mystery and thriller genre topics on UA-cam. So I was like why not?.. 🤷🏻‍♂️. I like that the trailer didn’t spoil the whole plot like many others do. This one, even with the trailer, I was genuinely shocked at the plot twists and the soundtrack for this films just puts you on your toes and feel uneasy like most of the movie. One of the few movies that are filmed like this, I did like that the main character didn’t die because she was the only smart and genuine person in this film. It did suck that the homeless man died too though. I agree with the others, the true barbarians were the old man and the selfish, lying rapist. Good movie overall. Thanks for reacting to horror films! I love horror so I’m glad to watch a long and see another’s POV of things.

    When I first watched this, it was on my old TV which was known to malfunction by changing the channel by itself from time to time. So when the scene switch happened between Bill Skarsgard eating concrete and the introduction to Justin Long, I believed that my TV did the magic channel switch. For the next 10 minutes I genuinely thought I was watching a completely different movie. 😂

    I also watched this movie having no idea what it was and I think that's the best way to watch it lol. I love that they set it up as just a creepy male killer storyline and then from the point mother shows up you spend the rest of the movie having no idea what's about to happen. Then the set up of the mother being the Barbarian when she's actually just a victim and the real monsters are the dad and AJ. Very good social commentary on violence against women and societal perception of gender

    It never fails every woman who reacts to this movie ALWAYS GETS weird vibes from the first guy AND the homeless guy, but then COMPLETELY gets swerved when the second guy was the one who betrayed her. I get it though.... the whole movie is a play on trust and perception, and generally just how our brains work. especially in today's world where creeps are harder and harder to identify.

    I read that the writer of the movie felt like it was becoming too precitable. Keith was probably meant to be the bad guy originally. He said he then decided to try and surprise himself as he wrote, so if he could surprise himself he could surprise the audience. I feel like the switch up is when she finds the door, the movie does a complete 180 at that point and becomes a whole new thing. Very cool.
