Such an inspiring story and a great video. The pathway to becoming a paramedic is certainly different in Australia. Here EMS and firefighting are two separate careers. You can become one or the other. To be a paramedic (which is the mandatory requirement to working on an emergency ambulance; EMT level isn't legal here), you must have a university degree in Paramedicine. EMS and FD are state government departments, so if you apply for either, you could be posted anywhere in the state, depending on staffing requirements. Entry into either is very competitive. Back in '97 when I joined the ambulance service, there were 3,000 applicants for 25 positions. Travis has shown the importance and rewards that comes from determination in trying to pursue a career of your dreams. Best wishes from Australia.
