CALTECH VS COLUMBIA VS RICE | My College Decision Process & Revealing Where I'm Going!

  • Happy Saturday everyone! In this video, I compare my top 3 college choices: Caltech, Columbia, and Rice. Each of the schools are really incredible and I'm so thankful to have had so many great options. Watch until the end of the video because I will reveal which college I'm going to attend for my undergraduate education as part of the Class of 2025! (I also created an artwork for the school I decided to go to and its timelapse is shown at the end :)). I wanted to make this video to help those of you who are trying to decide which university to attend or if you want to know more about the colleges in general. My discussion is pretty broad, however, I do mention some features which are specific to my major of Computer Science. I hope this video helps you and that you'll stay with me throughout my journey at college!

Congratulations!! I am proud of your choice. I am parents of rising 9th grade daughter. Please tell us about your parents support, how they did throughout the high school. Such as pushing you to get your dream school or leave you alone most of time.

    • @MinaRyumae
      @MinaRyumae  3 роки тому +1

Thank you so much! My parents were amazing throughout this entire process, but everyone is different and needs different amounts of support. I never had a dream school and I think it’s important not to because college apps are so competitive that if I didn’t get into my dream school I knew I’d be crushed. I was pretty independent when it came to school work (my parents didn’t really get involved with my homework, grades, etc) because I cared a lot about my grades and they knew that. I pursued what I wanted in terms of extracurriculars and my parents did not really mind what I chose to be a part of. But once I figured out my path they were incredibly supportive and helped guide me with what I wanted to do. Again, it’s hard to give you a definitive answer since every child needs varying levels of support, but I hope this helps you out a little. Best of luck to you and your daughter and I really wish you all success with her college journey!

Congrats on your decision to attend Rice. I agree with you. Among these three schools I would select Rice. I would not select Caltech due to the mental issue problem and suicide issues. Caltech doesn’t disclose these issues because these kids with mental issues eventually transfer to other schools. Some get help but others commit suicide, but by then these kids are out of Caltech’s issues. I wouldn’t select Columbia if you are Asian. The hate crimes against Asians in New York are just unbearable. It’s not safe there.

@@curtischen8440 I know two families. Their sons attended Caltech. One of them developed bipolar there. He ended up transferred to ASU. He committed suicide. Other boy also developed mental issue. He also transferred to ASU. It took three years for him to recover and function as a normal person. Mental health can not be thought lightly, it will destroy your life, and it may take so long to recover if it ever happens. I did not get to talk to one family because they couldn’t stand to live where they lived because there were so many memories of their son. So much pain. Other family told me that at Caltech TA teaches and grade. The most TAs are foreigners and hard to understand. They are very harsh on the undergrad students, and he started thinking that he was no good, and he thought there was something wrong with him. Caltech doesn’t really help them. They know that it’s is too much to help once one developed mental issue.
As for Columbia I think it’s a fine school. Very liberal. I think I have seen too much violence against Asian females and elderly in NY from SNS.

According to Forbes College Ranking 2021, Caltech is ranked 40th, Rice is ranked 24th, and Columbia is ranked # 5, in the nation.
Caltech is the 2nd best STEM graduate university in the USA (behind MIT, ranked as the #1 STEM graduate university). Caltech's Computer Science program is ranked # 3 in the nation. Caltech is 37% Asian, graduating 97% of them. I have visited Caltech with my daughter. It is a beautiful large campus having only about 2,000 students. The student:faculty ratio there is 3:1.
I have never visited Rice or Columbia. I think Columbia, which is in NYC, is in a dangerous area in the evening, which doesn't suit me or would not be good for my daughter. Also, NYC doesn't suit me. I think of it as a high crime area.
I have heard good things about Rice. Rice has about 7,000 students. Their student:faculty ratio is 6:1. Rice is 26% Asian graduating 99% of them. Their Computer Science program is ranked 13th in the nation.
Columbia is one of the 8 Ivy League universities. It has about 32,000 students. Their student:faculty ratio is 8:1. It is 18% Asian, graduating 98% of them. Their Computer Science program is ranked 10th in the nation.
Of the 3 universities you chose, I think I would prefer Caltech 1st, Rice 2nd, and I would not consider Columbia as a choice. I would have considered as my possible 3rd choice:
    • The U.S. Naval Academy (ranked # 55, student:faculty ratio 8:1, # 63 in Computer Science, about 5,000 cadets, 8% Asian graduating 100% of them),
    • Stanford University (ranked # 4, student:faculty ratio 5:1, # 2 in Computer Science, about 17,000 students, 23% Asian graduating 97% of them),
    • UCLA (ranked # 8, student:faculty ratio 18:1, # 18 in Computer Science, about 44,000 students, 28% Asian graduating 94% of them),
    • USC (ranked # 17, student:faculty ratio 9:1, # 14 in Computer Science, about 48,000 students, 21% Asian graduating 96% of them),
    • UC Berkeley (ranked # 1, student:faculty ratio 20:1, # 21 in Computer Science, about 43,000 students, 36% Asian graduating 95% of them), or
    • Harvey Mudd College (ranked # 89, student:faculty ratio 8:1, # 17 in Computer Science, about 1,000 students, 20% Asian graduating 97% of them, known as the # 1 undergraduate STEM college having no graduate programs).
Actually, I would probably consider the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) as the best choice of all the colleges and universities if my major was "Computer Science" or similar STEM fields which use Computer Science & programming (math, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, nuclear engineering, etc.). You will learn Self-Discipline & Respect if you go to the USNA. Those accepted to the USNA get a full scholarship, free dental service , and free medical service, plus a $100 to $250 monthly stipend, for 5 years of service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marines or as an Ensign with the U.S. Navy. Their Computer Science program is ranked # 63 in the nation.
But in order to get accepted to the USNA, you have to get approval from a U.S. Senator or U.S. Representative, pass their Physical Fitness Test and pass their ASVAB (Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test. You have to pass the ASVAB with a score greater than 74. For teenage girls, passing the Physical Fitness Test consist of doing 1 pull-up or more, running 3 miles in 25 minutes or less, doing 25 push-ups or more, and doing 60 crunches or more. Their Computer Science program is ranked 63rd in the nation.
If you graduate from the USNA, you will have free health care for the rest of your life! The U.S. Naval Academy is probably the best way to go to learn Computer Science, and having a career in Computer Science, or in another STEM fields (mathematics, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, physics, & others fields involving Computer Science), and in becoming a leader, and serving America! If you were to leave the U.S. Marines or the U.S. Navy, you will be very desirable and hireable by STEM companies (NASA, Boeing, Northrop-Grumman, Aerojet, Aerospace, Microsoft, Intel, Texas Instruments, Hewett Packard, Apple, & many many others) as a manager and leader.
But the male:female ratio at the USNA is 72:28 or about 7 to 3, meaning there could be (and is) some sexual abuse of women cadets at the USNA and in serving in the U.S. military (the occurrence of this happening is now low).

Boy did they fool you. It won’t take you long to realize that you should have gone to Columbia. I hope you finish near the top of your class in engineering so that it won’t turn out nearly as bad as I fear. If you do really well, then maybe you would consider transferring up.
