A stunning performance from all actors. Such an emotional movie, like Chopin's piece which spans, to be honest, throughout the movie. There was something of Ibsen in that movie which makes it fascinating! A masterpiece.
As the part of the Daughter goes, I felt every word that she said. As someone who has experience some melancholy in this area, I sympathise with both the mother and the daughter. But both spoke their versions of the truth. So no the daughter doesn't lie.
Wow, amazing to hear her speak. I felt here compassion tangible when she shared the story about the suffering woman. I was surprised by the reaction of the speaker with 1 sec. pause and another question - 21:05. Would it not be better to acknowledge her openess and comment that she just opened up with very personal story? did anyone else find that as odd?
First of all, I’m not a subtitle watching person but sat and watched the movie without any lack of attention. Amazing movie and her acting was so good. I was always a Ingrid Bergman fan, now I am a Liv Ullman fan.
Liv Ullmann's impassioned speech about the arts needs to be remembered - right now, the arts are unnecessarily under threat...for no good reason as the pandemic abates.....(They are threatened by idealogical, woke nonsense as well, but that's another story) As for her character's childhood memories in the film, is her change of heart due to her own maternal misgivings of possible neglect? That scene, for me, is excoriatingly true - Ullmann's character is protecting her child-self, all too late, all too viciously. Children are not able to cope with being abandoned, or to rationalise this act as the fugitive parent does! Whatever good reasons the parents apparently give, abandonment means psychological, emotional and spiritual death to the abandoned child, just as it would mean actual death for an animal in the same position. Don't have children if you can't provide what they need, from you, not from some paid carer....and that means real love, attention, guidance, laughter, shelter, interaction, play, discipline! I had a bipolar mother, childhood could be terrifying. We did reconcile in our last decade together, and Ullmann is right about the power of this, but it is not always neatly possible - that is not how human beings function in relation to each other, (especially when one of them is mentally ill).
I have worked with children for almost 40 years in church music and piano lessons and I completely agree with you. If you cannot be the one to raise and nuture your child that you gave birth to don't have them. Please. I get so tired of hearing adults say "well, children will adapt. They can handle it." No, they can't. They are children. You say that to try to deal with your guilt. The other side of the guilt is when you give the child every single thing they desire, try to be their "friend" instead of their parent and using your child as the pawn in your hatred for your spouse if you divorce. The children grow up with so many problems. Look around you! One of the primary reasons we have millenials, snowflakes and flurries, etc has so much to do with divorce or parents abdicating their responsibility to a daycare center or nanny.
