As Northernlion, I produce a variety of gaming content for UA-cam every single day. Be sure to tune in if you're interested in reviews, previews, first impressions videos, gameplay, walkthroughs, and playthroughs of new releases, my favorite classic games, as well as my favorites from the world of indie gaming. Thanks for watching (and reading this description!) and I hope I'll see you again.
The enemies you couldn't hit (and they couldn't hit you) were hallucinations because of the insane trait. I think.
"this cat apparently wants to die." lol
Having the cat adds a little more umph to the commentary. The random 'damn, you cat!!' makes me smile. At least your cat doesn't bite you at random before scurrying away
Some general advice I've found from my playthoughs...
1) Flameshooters will die from return damage
2) Look for dark patches on the floor and wall, you can down-jump though them, and they generally hold secret gold chests
3) A double statue and teleporter means you are going into a different zone
4) That Japanese demon you see is an illusion from dimensia, but are common in the Maya, they throw stars at you in your direction.
"This puts it in the annals"
-Northernlion, 2013
I just love that Naruto reference at 2:41 lol. Hokage, and substitution jutsu as the special technique.
Tips for Northernlion:
1-) If you ever die in a boss battle, use the architect to lock the castle and fight the boss again right off the bat.
2-) Invest in a equipment that doesn't have vampirism. The vampirism effect is per kill, not per hit, so in a big boss battle, the effect is pretty much useless.
3-) If the enemy is far away throw the chakra the other way and jump. Chakra doesn't go far in the direction you throw, but if you don't catch it, it will keep going the other way and easy hit.
few helpful tips:
- if you are running life-steal build, it more important to increase armor than hp
- try to increase your damage so you can oneshot mobs in area 1, makes runs much smoother
- as you level up, enemies start to scale up in stats, so dont overlevel things like hp and crit
- make use of runes - you want a rune in every piece of equipment, i recommend sprint*2 and vault and then combination of lifesteal/haste/gold gain
"Fus Ro Dah isn't useful against first boss", um... you sure about that bud?
I kinda wish I went back in time to be like "Northernlion the dementia trait creates fake enemies." but unfortunately it is too late.
hearing him from now and then he sounds sooo different to me
So glad this is becoming an actual series. I've been subscribed for a while, and am pretty worn out on the Isaac videos. So, really loving the fresh content.
That mystery ninja was a side effect of that rogue's trait that has insanity in the description, it makes you see enemies that aren't really there, the biggest hint is that the enemies are usually ones that have no place in that area
Actually, I kind of would like to see "Cat Leg-acy." Just imagine: on each floor the cat finds a different set of legs to rub against. Floor Five: The UA-camr!
Am I the only one that loves it when his cat interrupts and he makes stupid puns about it?
This and CK2 have made Northernlion one of my favorite youtubers lately.
9:39 That "valuable information" is not only found in journals. It's on the map on the wall of the very first room of the castle.
I hope this series is half as successful as your BOI one. I am LOVING IT.
Calypso's compass points you in the direction a secret area. Push your analog stick in the direction of the compass' hand when you come to where it lead you. It leads into a room that usually holds 2 chests/crates that drop a stats upgrade, rune or blueprint.
this series is so awesome! i wish it was longer epsisodes or 2 episodes a day!
Only a few blueprints are in an area, if you don't find any in the castle, you've found them all. More powerful recipes are found in new areas. Also, the map in the first room shows the scaling of the areas, with castle, forest, tower, dungeon respective in their difficulty.
Man i love this series.
I just got this game. Pretty awesome.
Watching NL adds more awesomeness.
I'm loving these episodes NL, keep em comin'!
2:40 - Like Dracula's Castle in Castlevania, Castle Hamson is a creature of chaos - it can have many incarnations.
This series is incredible, look so much forward to NL's growing progression.
"A table seems like a really weird place to have food"
Barbarian shout doesn't just knock back enemies, but will also destroy all incoming projectiles. It's a very defensive ability.
Some advice Ryan. Focus on getting any new armor that is an upgrade as your first priority, runes as your second, and raw stat upgrades as your third. Upgrade you armor and health a lot, as well as your straight attack damage (being able to one shot things makes life a lot easier.) As far as the raw stats are concerned, armor is more useful than health.
Also the hokage's special ability is the "replacement technique", which teleports you a short distance and leaves a piece of wood where you disappeared. :)
Love this LP.
With dementia you have a certain chance that once you enter into a room the first time, an "imaginary" enemy will spawn. It will not hurt you nor it can be killed. Normally it shows enemies that are proper to the area, but sometimes it can be enemies that do not belong to that area.
I love this series
NL, in those teleport rooms the two statues have an mp potion and food each. So if you're ever at full health, save them and teleport back to them before you fight a boss or move to a new area.
NLs cat is like "HOW CAN YOU DENY MY LOVE!?"
I'm loving this LP!
Here are what some items do
Hermes Boots
Allows you to walk on spikes
Charon's Obol
Next time you can enter castle for free.
Hyperion Ring
Gives you an extra life. When you die you come back to life with little health.
Hedgehog's Curse
You drop coins when hurt,
Calypso's Compass
, pointing to a hidden location. The location is a hidden door that has chests inside.
Nerd Glasses
•Corrects Near/far-sightedness
•Makes you see invisible items
•Cures color blindness
I want to see more of this series :3 This makes my day, NL. Thank you!
Northernlion, thanks for being an awesome dude and uploading these. Bought the game today and set a record amongst my friends for beating Khidr at level 18, 48 minutes into my first game! :D
just saying in case you havent found this out demencia/ insanity causes non real enemies to appear if you pause when going into a room you will see wich ones are real and not
Hey NL, a useful tip for you, though you may know it by now.
When you get to a teleporter room, the statues will always contain chicken on the left, and an MP potion on the right side.
really enjoying this series
NL, the way to get those chests in the wall are to be a character with dwarfism, then you can jump into small holes in the wall that are a little darker than the rest of the wall
@ 14:11 I'm guessing dementia makes you see enemies that aren't tangible.
The Geed reference made me so happy. Thank you, sir.
thanks for making the series! enjoying it a lot ! and i bought the game because of you. This studio must lovey ou !
''And turn your shinobi into a Hokage, Believe it!''
I love the Naruto reference there XD
NL's Bane voice is spot-on!
northernlion just have the luckiest runs ever, easy fairy chests, constantly finding boss rooms, getting recipes instead of gold,
Look for dark spots on the walls in the castle as a dwarf. You'll probably be able to walk through them to either avoid confrontation or get to some sick loot.
Love this so far, feel free to upload more often if you enjoy it too :)
.... when he didn't take the dwarf.... For your information NL, The Dwarfs are really good at getting lost of gold, and finding alot of secrets, and they take a few generations to come back.
Ryan the Demon guy with the ninja stars was an illusion. Since your heir was insane because of the Trait he sees things that are not really there. It cant hunrt you and you cant hurt it
It's cute watching NL fail to see what the 'Demon Ninja things' are: just products of his Dementia.
Although, what does one expect? This is NL! He has a reputation for forgetting things that have potential importance! Like RoarofDamnation said.
Episode 200: Hermes Boots, how do they work?
the insane trait seems to create phantom enemies which do no damage to you, cannot be damaged themselves and are indicated by the question mark when attacked and by not showing up on the pause screen
Paladin is one of the best classes, Ryan. A fairly large amount of HP, increased damage compared to most classes (more or less halfway between barbarian and shinobi) and the special ability make for an amazing combination.
don't know if it's been said or not, but .. you had a character with dementia.. dementia makes it so you see things.. that is what happened with the b ig knight in the one room that you thought was "dodging" your attacks as well as the ninja in the other, whose stars weren't hurting you.
if you press start and X to open up the 'magic card', it gives you a little bit of a description of what your traits do.:)
bro i dont know how your talking without stopping while playing and focusing thats MLG right there bro am givin you a sub
Series is really fun so far, can't wait to buy the game!
On a side note, I believe the unhittable knight at the beginning and the demon during the last run did not actually exist and were the results of dementia.
This game is awesome first the megaman teleprtation and then the naruto reference in the Shinobi upgrade
new favorite series!
I love this series!
It looks like the Insanity trait makes your character see fake enemies every few rooms. When you hit them and a "?" comes up it means they're not real so you can't hurt them and they can't hurt you.
Really enjoying this series! :)
Also I think the shinobi is a naruto reference since you upgraded it to hokage
at 3:56 to the right of Northernlion there is a secret dwarf room, see if you can spot the darkened block.
been waiting for this all day! thanks NL :)
If I had to hazard a guess I'd say dementia means you hallucinate some enemies. The one you swung at that you 'missed' and got the confusion mark was just a figment of your character's imagination.
NorthernLion, the rune you have that hurts enemies when you get hurt also affects wall turrets and spike balls, which kills them instantly!
Haha, I love the sarcastic use of "Check your privilege", An awful thought terminating cliche/ Straw man if I ever saw one.
I just wanted to point out that the game is a lot more random than you think. I just fought the first boss and he was lvl33 and I'm lvl 30, so you can never be higher or equal to him. And before anyone says so, I know I didn't have the enchantment that makes enemies higher level.
Northernlion, if you see a teleporter that is not the boss room, usually the next room, depending on where you are leads to the forest, the maya or the land of darkness.
One other thing. Although, many of those darker walls i said before can only be accessed when you are dwarfed. But not all of them. So still keep your eyes peeled.
(Sorry about not including that on the first one.)
oh my god I'm hooked on this game I want more.
The first gatekeeper is extremely easy if you use a mage which has the ability to create a ring of fire that circulates around you. All you have to focus on then is dodging the attacks.
Awesome, loving this series NL. Make it as often as Issac :D
SPOILER, don't read if you have not watched the video.
Great job Ryan! The first boss down after 3 episodes, that's really good!
The compass leads you to a super secret door with awesome loot so ALWAYS go for it, unless its in t
Don't forget to break the statues by the boss door. There's always a drumstick in one and a potion in the other. :)
i love this series so much! haha would love some more :)
i realy love this serie on your channel
I think Dementia causes you to see fake enemies that don't do damage to you nor can you damage to them. For example: the ninja demon thing, or the big knight that was on a higher platform than the other knight at 13:57.
The Demencia was so funny, even funny was that he didn't realize it.
NL: "This cat wants to die, so I'm gonna go put it down... on the ground."
You must play as the Miner, it is your destiny, the Spelunky calls to you.
According to the wiki, C.I.P. means your health bar is hidden, not that you take less damage or something. Not being able to see your current health would be a very BAD thing.
These are great. Keep em coming, boss.
I love the House of Leaves reference! Thank God someone else read it :D Love you NL
Instead of using the teleport, NL goes through the death sentence room full of spikes 7:07
Shinobi means "Ninja". But an Hokage is a chef who's especially in Naruto. Also, the "believe it!" is a quote frome naruto itself, from the manga.
All NL fans, look up the game "A dark room". Its a text based game basically, that has a bit of depth. Its free with no download, I think NL fans would like it.
Ohhhh i get it now because of that retaliation rune when spikes and other traps hit him they will occasionally die!
Ohhh! I get it! That ninja is just an illusion because the character you where playing is insane! (you said that in the beginning)
NL. The Fah Ro Dus destroys any projectal, so use this if like a mage or flame gets near you
That devil guy just appeared because you had Insanity as a trait, pretty cool
If you want to get to the manor piece on the far left, put your cursor on the architect and move left.
I love this game
House of Leaves was an awesome book.
NL: once you have had run where the boss room is reasonably close to the start, use the architect to lock down the castle and make some practise runs!
thumbs up so he can see pl0x
I haven't read any wiki either, but I think that's what Insanity does, it creates fake enemies, I think the knight he kept "missing" was imaginary as well
"This cat apparently wants to die, so i'll put it down..." - Northernlion 2013
"Herp derp I r want character who no git hurt so i r no pick guy with INSENSITIVITY TO PAIN herp derp de herp" - Northernlion
