  • My dishwasher is doing some weird stuff when you first start it up and I'm not sure what the purpose of it is. Do other brands of dishwashers do this? If anyone knows what is going on and why please comment and let me know.

I know this is old but this strange sequence is to soak the dishes, some of these newer models like to soak them before the main recirculating pre rinse happens. To help loosen soils. We have a 2020 Maytag which does something very interesting, which it’s supposed to do, once it’s halfway filled with water it’ll start the pump and keeps it on as it continues to fill and pressurize up to its desired water capacity and then continues running until the control board calls for a drain and then as it keeps the main pump running it’ll open the drain valve and activate a separate drain pump and then will begin to surge as the soils flush, and it’s oh so good sounding, so smooth. Runs all arms at once and never pauses unlike our last WP made Maytag Jetclean.

Mine does it too, so it must be normal. If you find your dishes are not clean take the bottom screen out. Check for clogs. Also, there is a screen under the impeller that may need cleaning.

What I believe it’s doing because my Whirlpool does the same thing it’s sensing the amount of soil in the fill phase, then it will determine if it needs to purge the water and do an extra pre-rinse or two. The amount of time is not changed it’s just the amount of water it uses if it senses that it’s a very heavy soiled wash it will use more gallons of water, the amount of time is the same.

I would buy that for the normal or the auto wash as the manual shows a range of gallons of total water used but on the heavy cycle it shows 8.7 gallons period so there is no added extra pre-wash in the total cycle. The cycle shows 2 pre-wash, main wash and 4 rinses on heavy where it shows 1 pre-wash with an optional pre-wash and 2 rinse with 2 optional rinses for normal or auto. So it may be that the actions the washer takes at the beginning are for soil level detection but with the heavy cycle they are unnecessary as that cycle already maxes out on all available pre-wash and rinses.

It's alternating between the top and bottom wash arms

I don't think it would be auto-sensing, since that's what the Auto cycle most likely does. My only guess is maybe it is doing quick tests of the main recirculation pump while its filling to make sure it is working properly before starting the wash cycle.
As for the drain pump coming on more than once in the beginning, that's normal, at least to me. I have a Whirlpool unit that does the same thing once you start it, but it carries on with the rest of the cycle.

It’s soaking the dishes before the pre rinse.

My 2020 GE doesn't do that, but it has a mechanical timer, and just gets right to work.

I had a Samsung dishwasher and it only lasted about 1 year and the whole circuit board went out on it and we just kept waiting on parts for several weeks and then they replaced it with a new Bosch dishwasher I don't recommend Samsung for a dishwasher

It's of a Millennial design, so it acts like one. So in other words, before it does work, it has to carry on, complain, kvetch, kvetch some more, tweet about it, order Starbucks online, and then FINALLY leave for work, to pick it up at the drive-thru. They show up to work at 2:45 PM, at which point the boss has already left for the day. The older workers had finished all the work (spotless dishes) already, so all the Millennial has to do is spend the rest of their shift on their phone to collect their paycheck, so they can afford Starbucks tomorrow. That's what's going on inside your dishwasher.
Hey, it's a better answer than anyone else has come up with so far!
I could understand if it actually ran for a minute or so, because then it could sense how clean or dirty the water was already, to get a good idea of how long it's going to actually need to run for.
Now the interesting thing, is that dishwashers today don't take on enough water to run all the spray arms at once, so there's computer control and valves and all sorts of other complicated stuff to break in order to save 3 drops of water. Technology Connections had a video on that.
Now if the motor is 1.6A, that's 192 watts. To make math easy, round 2:45 to 3 hours. And let's make believe it's going to run the motor for the full 3 hours, or 180 minutes.
Sharkie's Potscrubber dishwasher used about 310 watts for maybe 45 minutes, so we're looking at about 30% more electricity, but for less than half the time. I'll let you do the rest of the math yourself, and once you get your figures, you will know why the dishwasher is labeled HE, because it truly is HARDLY EFFICIENT!
Damn good thing your brought your old one from the old house...
